Huckabee likens abortion to a holocaust

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

(CNN)–Speaking before a gathering of Christian conservative voters, GOP presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said legalized abortion in the United States was a holocaust.

"Sometimes we talk about why we're importing so many people in our workforce," the former Arkansas governor said. "It might be for the last 35 years, we have aborted more than a million people who would have been in our workforce had we not had the holocaust of liberalized abortion under a flawed Supreme Court ruling in 1973."

Huckabee also spoke adamantly of the need for conservative lawmakers to show no compromise on fighting for a constitutional amendment that defines marriage between a man and a woman. "I'm very tired of hearing people who are unwilling to change the constitution, but seem more than willing to change the holy word of God as it relates to the definition of marriage," he said.

Huckabee, spoke before the Family Research Council's Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. Saturday.

Once again, someone without a uterus and/or the possible chance of becoming pregnant through rape or incest, takes their fundamentalist beliefs and wants to force feed the rest of the nation their views. These are the real monsters!

Granted, I think a woman should be responsible for her actions, ie; don't use abortion as birth control – try to think about the possibilities BEFORE you place yourself in a tricky situation. However, I also don't feel I have the right to tell another woman what to do.

I am so sick of listening to this totalitarian theocrat pander to the most ignorant and intolerant "Christians" in our country. Is he not aware most abortions were legal in this country before Roe?

I agree Roe should go, and the states should decide. However Huckabee wants an anti-Roe to BAN abortion for all of us, not to mention an equally unconstitutional "definition" of marriage, which government at all levels should stay out of. Marriage is a social/religious contract between two persons (of ANY gender), and should NEVER be a government-sacntioned one.

But the kicker is when he conflates not amending the Constitution as he sees fit, with being "willing to change the holy word of God." Ever read the First Amendment concerning the separation of church and state, Mike? Or do you want to get rid of that too?

In these dark times, where our freedoms are being attacked from all sides, we need Ron Paul more than ever.

Having babies to produce free labor went out when the big companies took over farming several decades ago. And comparing abortion to the holocaust? Huckabee's thinking is flawed on this one.

Is it true that as governor of Arkansas, he had no problem accepting federal money to pay for abortions?

This should set those democrats who saw Huck as a moderate straight. He's a strong candidate for VP, if Rudy gets the nod, and the only viable conservative alternative to Fred, if Rudy falls off.
He's getting more press, but not much more money, and that's the only primary of importance until Jan.

Where does he get off comparing this a heinous illegal act in history.

Do you agree with Mike Huckabee's statement comparing legalized abortion to the holocaust?

Ah yes, let's have 35 million more babies for which we have no provisions for healthcare, education, and shelter so that we can train them at an early age (say, 9) to serve as mercenaries in the war on terror. Now here's a candidate America could really get behind!

All thses discussions of the sins of abortion are always directed at the woman.I am Pro-Choice but have a hard time with issue – its a gut-wrenching subjet to everyone I know on either side of the issue.
But, why don't we introduce another element here. If the guy can't use his -- responsibly, then he should be fined and held accountable for the miss-use of it. Bringing an unwanted child in this world is irresponsible for both – and both should be held accountable for this. And if he is not willing to support the child or pay for an abortion he should be fined and ticketed on the level of a third degree felony. Just an idea.

Alright Mr. Huckabee. I get your point. They had a holocaust. They killed Jews. Now everybody is coming along try to top it with their own holocaust. Like sliced bread or something. Get over it. Your holocaust isn't going to beat the real holocaust. Let's get some of these black people working. What is wrong we can't print a little more cash? Are you afraid that the Pope is going to come over and take away your golden money printing machine? Some more thoughts like this:

Well I can certainly see and study the constitution that our fore fathers wrote. It has stood the test of time so far because it is difficult to change it easily. I am having a bit of difficulty in locating the "word of god" document. Mike maybe you could tell me where that document is, so I could study it more closely. If we are refering to the Bible, well that has been changed by individuals like you over the centuries to shape this world into the mess it is now thanks to religious zealots like you.

As one Baptist minister has said, the majority of Pro-lifers are pro-life only while the fetus is still in the womb. Once a child is born, they stop caring (SCHIP).

Did he forget that women won the right to vote? Because he just alienated a good portion of them with that statement. This guy doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.

If abortion is the holocaust, then what is sending our children off to an unjust war?

Seriously, thinking on this level is outright dangerous. I would personally never suggest my wife or someone I know have an abortion but for me to impose my will on other people is insane. These republicans and abortion oponents are all dangerously out of touch.

Maybe those who Huckabee says want to "change the holy word of God" merely don't believe in him or other magical beliefs; thus don't want their reality based on science fiction.

Also, last I checked the words in the Bible were written by men, not a supernatural being. I know that Christians and Atheists have differing beliefs and I'm sure glad that our constitution (which Huckabee wants to edit) provides the freedom for both sides to believe in what they want. I just hope that other rights, like abortion, aren't stepped on by religious views.

this guy must be desperate for that 40% of the population after seeing the poll numbers. it is easy because most christians are taught they don't need to use their brains as long as they follow "gods" plan for them. all anyone needs to do is exploit their stupidity and ignorance to get their support. it always amazed me that conservative republicans are always in the media w/ conflicts about their own sexuality to begin with. it's probably just the devil testing their faith w/ god. the reality of the world is in front of our eyes and it's sad there are so many uneducated, deceived people in this world. too bad when you die you don't get a second of clarity to realize you aren't going to heaven.

It doesn't matter whether a person has a uterus and/or the possibility of producing a human being–when you kill the child–you have committed murder–you have taken an innocent life–perhaps what should happen is the two who produced the child should share in being eliminated, except in cases of rape and incest, then just the one–however, in most cases eliminate the two monsters that created the situation.

Mike Huckabee likening abortion to the Holocaust is a slap in the face to every human soul who perished under Hitler. Republicans, you all have had more than enough time and power to make abortion illegal. You will never do it, you will only promise it just to get votes.

The reason why we're importing our workforce is because big business is too cheap to pay Americans a livable wage. If those 1 million abortions didn't happen we'd still have an imported workforce, just more people struggling. Is there anyone out there that's actually fooled by Huckabee's argument?

And with the gay marriage amendment: Amendment's exist to tell the government what laws they CAN NOT impose upon the people, not what laws they can impose.

And what right does a politician have to push their moral values on people that may not believe in their beliefs?

We are a country of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Pagans, etc... and I find it disgusting and mortifying that the trend is leaning towards politicians that want to push their own personal Religious beliefs and morals on the people of this country.

They can have their values and morals... but to make any part of their religious beliefs POLICY in Government is appalling. We can not be a country of Religious freedom if any one Religion takes precedent over another at the Government level.

First off all the reason we are importing workers is so that we can have cheap labor so that people like himself and his fat-cat buddies can fatten their profit margin. Second, the Republicans don't seem to have any conscience about sending thousands of our young men and women to their deaths for Bush's private war. So until then hypocrites like Huckabee dont have a leg to stand on.

Every embryo has a specific and unique DNA that makes it undeniably a human being, despite the rhetorical distortion and disingenuousness that so many individuals use when arguing otherwise. Abortion is murder; to express or defend otherwise is a lie and an abomination.

Didn't a recent published study just show that abortion rates had no correlation to whether it was illegal in a particular country (and possibly an inverse one if at all)? The biggest factors in how many abortions there will be are things like poverty and access to quality health and contraceptive care.

Making abortion illegal does not make it go away by any stretch of the imagination. Teaching children and young adults how to avoid unwanted pregnancy and getting people out of poverty will do far more to stop abortion than making it illegal and standing on a soapbox condemning everyone.
