From the campaign trail to the 'Trick O’ Treat' trail

John Edwards with son Jack.

BEDFORD, New Hampshire (CNN) - Jack and Emma Claire Edwards knew it wasn’t their average Halloween night.

Starting a quarter after five, former Sen. John Edward’s, D-North Carolina, accompanied his two children along with a dozen friends and staffers door-to-door in an affluent Granite State neighborhood. Neighbors were expecting them.

Jack, age seven, donned a spartan warrior costume while Emma Claire, age nine, sported a pink fifties bop girl dress. But, no get-up for the presidential hopeful - only a pair of blue jeans and a fleece.

Photographers quickly learned that the Edwards children were not on board with the spectacle, dodging and running from the cameras at every opportunity. At one moment, the Democratic presidential candidate told his children to “slow down,” at which time Jack responded, “We want to get away from the grown ups!”

A reporter yelled back, “What’s wrong with grown ups?”

Obama and Edwards are threatened by Clinton, that is evident in their displays during the debate.
Why else would they spend their time to address Hillary and not say where they stand.
In all the hype, I guess I don’t understand why everyone is calling the things Clinton said double talk. She clearly supported the Governor and said she understood his stands but did not agree with it. So, gosh, a President who would take the time to listen and understand the situation, that alone would be a change of pace for our Country.

Thank you for posting this. Knowing what Edwards' children wore for Holloween is obviously an important piece of political news.

You know, I used to like this guy and I still occasionnaly get slightly suckered by his speeches but his priorities are way off. First he continues his campaign despite the fact his wife is dying. Wouldn't you want to spend as much time as possible with your loved one? Wouldn't you think the kids deserve a quiet "normal" life with a dying loved one? Now this spectacle. Why not let your kids enjoy Halloween without this insanity? Both he & his wife could have easily either hired a nanny to take the kids or let the kids go with other relatives. The kids are way too young to understand the insanity of photographers and newscasters. Shame on the Edwards'

the media need to calm down- they look like idiots- filming kids trick or treating for political reasons. They might as well be filming Britney Spears eating a burrito at Taco Bell.

Edwards is phony, mean, and ill-spirited-he proved it on the last debate by attacking Hillary viciously, like a Pit Bull dog. He disrespected a woman-the first lady and a human. Edwards has no compassion- he put his ill wife on the campaign trail to campaign for him, which I would never do. Ed is homophobic-he said "I am not comfortable around those," but he forgets that they are humans. Edwards is a BIG spender- who gets his hair cuts for $400.00, who lives in a 36,0000 sq feet mansion, and who spend hours at beauty parlor. I would stay home, but will not vote for Edwards or Obama, if Hillary is not nominated. My passion is for a woman to be the first President so we can make history-I believe Hillary is more compassionate and qualified than that those two-ed and Obama.

Must be a bunch of Hillary supporters out doing the Queen B's deeds! So glad when she exits the stage much like Howard Dean did. Maybe then the news can get back to more interesting things. Hillary doesn't know where she stands anymore than George Bush knows where to stand. They both have to go ask their respective husbands – Dick Chenney or Bill Clinton. How pathetic and more pathetic is the people who defend either of these goons!

Most parents would like to take their own kids out to halloween. Its a rewarding and fun experience for both parent and child. Im sure he didnt ask or want all the media there. He was just trying to do what all normal loving parents do, and take his young children trick or treating. Get off his back people.

i dont understand this. does it make him a bad person to get a $400 haircut? if he can afford it, let him do it! i dont see what the big deal is over a haircut..its HIS money, HE earned it and he can use it any way he wants. When he and Obama speak, i see authenticity, when Hilary speaks, its SO obvious she's lying.

I can't think of anything scarier than John Edwards showin' up at my doorstep on Halloween.

He'd probably want you to put your wallet in his goody-bag rather than candy.

Let me answer the reportes question!! Whats wrong with grown-ups? They got us into a war we can't win. they have destroyed our country with thier greed, They don't believe in honesty, they lie over the news to sell papers, They lie to people about the gas and oil situation to increase an already overamount of profits, they are so busy making money that 4 out of 5 sets of parents don't care enough about their children to monitor their school work or the friends,
Would you like me to go on or is that enough to let you know that most grown-ups suck!! Take you for example! your running down the street with a camera trying to take a picture of a little boy who just wants to go trick or treating!! you really need to get a life!!

"Trick O' Treat" makes no sense. It should be "Trick Or Treat." I think that the writer is confusing the phrase with "Jack O' Lantern."

I really wanted to say something cute about this cute story but I find myself wanting to defend Edwards and his children from you people who get some kind of pleasure from downing this family. Shame on you but most of all SHAME on philly nyc ny you should be very shamed of yourself for even pretending to write to a child and say things like that about his dad. GRRRRRR!

In response to the comments about the media leaving the kids alone. I think this was a planned event by the campaign. It was listed on a NH blog as part of the weeks campaign events. I have met Elizabeth several times and have the greatest respect for her but maybe this wasn't the best idea.

    Dodd vs. Edwards online

In the latest faux-informal missive from a candidate to supporters, Dodd forwards supposed email traffic between his campaign manager, Sheryl Cohen and his web guru, Tim Tagaris.

She tells me that in addition to a spike in traffic and mentions on progressive blogs, we could beat John Edwards October online fundraising goal if I emailed a few people and asked them to help get us there.

The Edwards monthly goal is $500,000, Tagaris writes: “For all the hype their internet team and Joe Trippi gets, we finished the month nipping at their heels.”

Hey, guys, Edwards is a smart, likeable kind of guy. I am not supporting him, but I think he has a pretty good head on him.

As for his $400 haircut, it was just an image consultant's fee. As you may recall, Edwards did used to look pretty boyish and young before this barber/stylist guy gave him a new look. He is a professional image consultant and has done it for a lot of people. He did it free for Edwards for a while because he (the barber) is a Democrat but you can't expect him to fly out to Edwards's campaign from California for free or for even $50 or $100. $400 is not a big deal to pay someone to look professional and seasoned when he/she is running for President. Let's stop giving Edwards grief about it.

Okay, those of you defending Edwards by saying "oh, he just wanted to spend time with his kids..." need to put down whatever you're smoking and join us here back in reality. I'm sure John Edwards loves his kids but this was obviously a staged media event. The neighbors were told in advance to expect them. He brought his campaign staffers with him. The cameras didn't just accidently show up in the same neigborhood that John Edwards decided to take his kids trick or treating with a few dozen friends and employees.

I would question the judgment of anyone who exploits their own children for political gain. This was a bad move by Edwards and I definately have lost a little more respect for him.
