Obama is sworn into the Senate by his eighth cousin, Vice President Cheney.
SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (CNN) - At a campaign event Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama called his distant cousin, Vice President Dick Cheney, "a crazy uncle in the attic."
Obama was referencing the recent revelation by the Vice President's wife, Lynne Cheney, that he and the Vice President are distantly related.
"For the first time in a long time, the name George Bush will not appear on the ballot," he told the crowd of about 500 people at Converse College in Spartanburg.
"The name Dick Cheney, my cousin, will not appear on the ballot," Obama said. "We had been trying to hide that cousin thing for a long time. Everybody's got a black sheep in the family. A crazy uncle in the attic."

Touche', Senator Obama, touche'. Not only is he the crazy uncle in the attic, Cheney is downright diabolical. An evil man hell-bent on war though he refused to serve himself.
The best defining word for this cretin is despicable.
I like Barack, but he has used that joke (or a version of it) WAYYY too many times now. He needs to get some new writers...and not the ones who are going on strike!
"Crazy uncle"–hilarious!
"Obama... I am your cousin..."
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
Dick Cheney is the crazy uncle in the attic like Winston Churchill was the lonely voice in the wilderness.
I'll bet Obama has this picture, with Cheney cut out, hang in his living..
Hey Obama: Cheney's not an "Obama Boy" either.
Hmmm This line bears a striking resemblance to one from
this article in the Economist back on September 1st. (See the end of the first paragraph.)
A crowd of 500? Way to pack'um in, Barack.
Dick Cheney is the crazy uncle in the attic like Winston Churchill was the lonely voice in the wilderness.

Comparing Dick Cheney to a great statesman like Winston Churchill is a supreme insult to Churchill's memory. A better comparison would probably be between Cheney and one of the men in Hitler's inner circle, such as Adolf Eichman.
I like obama's humor. I really like this line about crazy uncle.
But, maybe instead of the attic we can revise that to Gitmo.
South Carolina wasn't the first place Obama made this joke – he said it in Durham, North Carolina Nov. 1.
I'll bet his Mother is real proud of that line.. And it does kind of fit in with what Biden was saying about his political intellect, Jimmy the Greek must feel vindicated..
Too bad crazy uncle Dick isn't in jail.
wow ticker, He said this long time ago when he was making a joke. Obamas recent debate that he scored highly is making the media report negative stuff about him and they are playing mind game by revisiting this that doesn't matter. We know he is not related to cheney. Fortunately Obama is careful enough and he can stand your mud slinging!!
Leave it to the democrats to do nothing but put forth petty insults.
Jo-jo,
it is CNN recycling this story over and over, just like the photo of the "happy couple" Bill & Hill. This is really just a gossip column, for more relevance you need to go to other sources.
who keeps their 'crazy' relatives "in the attic" anyway. what a ridiculous thing to say.
There new speculation today that Governor Rounds of South Dakota might jump in the Senate race, which would be terrible news for Senate Democrats by making SD competitive. Link.
Cheney may be a distant cousin, but I'll bet Neville Chamberlain is Obama's great grandfather.
God help the good old USA if any of the democrats get into office as president.
CNN tees up another one for the Loony Left
There is no newsworthy content in this article whatsoever, but it does serve as a meeting place for Republican Haters to demonstrate their hatred. If you're here to increase your political IQ, save yourself and leave now!

Petty insults are the stock-in-trade for such right-wing loonies as Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, and all the others. And Ann Colter has made a career out of petty insults.
Once again, a right-winger has literally shot himself in the foot by spewing something on this site that has no basis in fact. Like so many conservative positions.....

ANY of the Democratic candidates would be a far better president than any of the numbskull GOP candidates, and a vast improvement over the greatest numbskull of them all, George W. Bush.
I think CNN used that humor part one which they edited and now this is part two bringing the same thing in different version. Cnn, if you are not campaigning for hillary show me some fair reporting for all the candidates!!! This is sickening at best after America had gone the turmoil in the last 8years and I don't think anyone cares....
Leave it to a Republican to include "God" and anything governmental. Come on now Bill, are you really that naive to think that "our" religious affiliation to "God" has had nothing to do with this war?
