Clinton: I’m attacked for winning, not for being a woman

Sen. Clinton took questions from reporters Sunday along the Mississippi River in Clinton, Iowa.

CLINTON, Iowa (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, told reporters Sunday that her Democratic rivals are attacking her simply because, as she said, she’s “winning.”

Clinton was asked about an essay written by Kate Michelman, a senior adviser to the campaign of former Sen. John Edwards, that criticized the New York senator for what she called “disingenuously playing the victim card” by bringing up gender in recent stops and emails.

“I don’t think they piled on me the other night because I’m a woman,” Clinton said. “I think they piled on because I’m winning. And that’s what happens.”

Clinton has been using the phrase “piling on” ever since Tuesday night’s Democratic debate where her opponents took various opportunities to draw contrast with her over issues like her vote to authorize the war in Iraq, her vote in support of labeling the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, and whether or not she’s stated clearly enough her position on New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer’s plan to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses.

Interesting. This is exactly what Chris Matthews suggested you say after the horrible miscalculation by your campaign to play the gender card.

You even liked his suggestion about the heat in the kitchen enough to use it.

I really wonder if you have ever had an original thought.

Let's see. Does anyone see the irony of Hillary whining about being piled on by the boy's club and then licking her wounds at the Wellsley Girls Club?

Right. They're attacking you because you're winning – and becuase they know you can't answer a question with a simple Yes or No – and that makes you an easy target. Get used to it – all candidates are under attack – that's what a 'campaign' is all about. Ask any General.

Hillary you're the best, and will win. There is nothing wrong with seeing both sides as Hillary does. I can't believe all the hate that comes from other canidates. 2009 can't come fast enough.

  5. Karen,ny are not being attacked. You are being singled out by others who know they can prey on your powerless ways. If you fight them back they will know that you are not weak. If you stand there and take it they will do it over and over. No one respects a weak person.

She is such a class act. And her opponents are getting desperate. She is going to win this nomination and be our next president, and it can't happen soon enough.

I saw the debate and I agree. They did pile up on her. Pundants were saying, for Obama to gain traction he would have to attack Senator Clinton. He did. Edwards was as ugly a character as you can be. His ego is bruised, so what can he do next? Attack the front runner. She happens to be a woman who is runnng for president. I get andry when I hear, she is pulling the gender card. Look at the poll numbers. She will get the nomination and the discomfort with her fellow Dems after will be dramatic.
Go Hillary and don't let anyone drag you down. You are WAY to smart for that!

I'm sorry but I think that Obama and Edwards are the ones playing the gender card. Obama is leading Edwards in lots of polls in lots of states and I haven't heard a peep out of Edward's mouth about Obama. Neither did Edwards lash into Obama the other evening like he did Hillary.

If your gonna dish it out do it fairly and squarely and dish it to the guys as well as the girls!

She is attacked because she is a lying hypocrite, the same as her husband. I'm surprised that people are not astute enough to recognize this.

You got the woman part right. But not the winning part. Anyone that thinks a Mondale endorsement is a good thing, certainly is not a winner.

The master manipulator strikes again. Rather that FACE her critics within her own party...she brilliantly spins it around to make it look like her rivals are out to get her.

Poor Hillary, never takes a position on any issue of substance and always finds a way to blame someone else...

Or worse in this case she simply tries to play games by changing the subject and tried to distract people into talking about her winning the polls.

Yes, Edwards & Obama are jealous of Hillary's winning. Hillary is winning and they are whinning. Anybody can complain, condemn and critize, and most fools do.

Edwards always considers himself a victim. He (actually his wife) said Edwards was victimised for not a being black candidate like obama (thus not getting blacks support). Now, he said he is being victimised for being not being a woman candidate like hillary (thus not getting the women votes).

Edwards is full of himself. He should note that all the american presidents have been white men. He should criticize himself as white man for failing including his policies, his negative compaigns, his $400 haircut....

Headline reads 'polls' show that Clinton is ahead/winning. Mmm? What polls? 100 or 1000 people polled? So how does that represent or predict how the entire voting body will -truly- vote in an election? That is not predictable. DO NOT believe these 'polls'. They are nothing more than disguised propaganda meant to make you think a given candidate is ahead of the pack, thus you might as well give up on your 'lesser' candidate and 'go with the flow'. Stop being a drone. Evaluate the candidates YOURSELF and choose whom YOU PREFER based upon thoughtful review of their background/promises. Do NOT choose the candidate the FLOCK wants because it is popular. If you do, then don't bother voting you lazy mindless drone. You will be hurting democracy, not helping it.

Oh, my God. Hillary is getting more ridiculous day by day with her answers. I'll be embarrassed if the Democrats select her to represent the Democratic side. She was up there because of her connection with Bill Clinton and I like him a lot, and I think he certainly would be an asset for her. But this is getting ridiculous. First, it's the woman thing. Now, it's the winning thing. Hillary, take a stand and defend your position. I am not going to vote for you if you don't know where you stand on issues. If Hillary wins the Democratic nomation, I am going for Ron Paul on the Republican side, and it would be the first time I vote for a Republican.

Typical Hillary, lying and positioning herself as the victim. Whether it's her "right wing noise machine" or "vast right wing conspiracy" the woman always has a foil to cover up for her totally pathetic public appeal and complete and total lack of character.
