Huckabee floats idea of sending Hillary Clinton to space

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee would be happy to see Sen. Hillary Clinton go into space.

(CNN) - Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee outlined one special plan he'd consider for NASA's exploration of space.

"Maybe Hillary can be on the first rocket to Mars," he said, referring to the Democratic presidential frontrunner.

The Republican presidential candidate responded to a question asking if more money would be put into space exploration. His witty response about Clinton generated cheers from the St. Petersburg audience and followed his description of the earthly benefits of NASA's programs.

"Whether it's the medical technologies that saved many of our lives and the lives of our families, it's the direct result from the space program," he said. "We need to put more money into space and technology exploration."

The question, posed by Steve Nielson of Denver, Colorado, asked if the candidates would commit to sending Americans to Mars by the year 2020.

Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado disagreed with Huckabee's promise and would not commit to sending anyone to Mars because, "We can't afford some things, and going to Mars is one of them."

On the issues of taxes, the war on terror, and the US supreme court....You bet I'm better of then I was 7 years ago and so is everyone else! We need to stop talking about debating health care and start concentrating on illegal immigration and the war on terror. If we will not be here as a nation if we don't secure our borders and keep islamic terrorism off our shores! Any one of these gentlemen with the exception of Ron Paul would be better than any of the socialist democrats the are running.

I think all the "suits" around Huckabee would like to send him to Mars, Hillary ain't running as a republican candidate. Huckabee needs to focus on knocking off his republican opponents.

You misquoted. Ron Paul did not say anything about Mars. (Although he probably would have cited the expense if given the chance.)

It was Tom TanBREASTo, not Ron Paul that made the comment about not being able to afford Mars exploration. Typical CNN incompetency. Go RON PAUL 2008!!!

Huckabee's "witty response"? Seems pretty obvious and pointless to me. And how is the space program responsible for revolutionary medical technology? Did we steal blueprints from the Martians? Sure, Mars is fascinating and largely unknown, but certainly there are more pressing issues than the mystery of our planetary neighbor. I'm beginning to think Chuck Norris uses Huckabee's head as a speed bag.

This debate was completely biased, and unfair to Ron Paul. They purposely and maliciously made him look bad. There is finally a genuine politician who wants to make a difference, and run this country the way it was meant to be run, and CNN mocked him. If Ron Paul doesn't win the 2008 presidential elections who knows what will become of America.

I think it's comments like these that show just how out of touch the repub's really are. They don't have any answers to simple questions. Huckleberry is a joke!

huckabee really impressed me in the debate. he had witty lines, compassion, and intelligence. he also stayed calm during attacks, which is something that romney failed at miserably. in fact, romney looked like a scared child next to huckabee's calm demeanor, and romney's logic was often repetitive and obtuse (especially on the issueregarding the children of illegal immigrants receiving scholarships). i feel that moneybags mitt isn't the right person for the job at all. but huckabee is really getting my attention.

I didn't hear Paul comment on that. Anyway, who cares about Clinton? Huckabee and McCain need to go to Mars and be out of our hair. Next time, try to schedule a debate, and give Cooper a stopwatch.

It wasn't Paul who commented we couldn't afford it, it was Tancredo. It's disgusting than CNN's journalists can't keep things straight that they sat there and watched and can just as easily confirm. Seriously people, it's all on YouTube too!

Governor Huckabee had a brilliant idea tonight, right off the cuff. Hillary would undoubtedly do a great deal of good out in space. She says she has a lot of ideas, but the country can't afford them all. This is one idea we definitely should fund, ASAP. Just how long does it take to reach Mars? Four years? Eight?

Okay, so Huckabee can make a few witty jokes... but if his policies were that good would he have to rely on his comedic distractions from issues?

What isn't witty at all are his psychotic christian supporters who think Jesus endorses him and that all opponents should go to hell... at least thats how they act on the forums

And, it wasn't Ron Paul who said that but he has said similiar things to that before.

btw I think that Giuliani uses even shallower tactics than does Huckabee.

First off, as others have already stated, it was Tancredo that said that, not Ron Paul.

Second, of all the candidates tonight Huckabee was clearly the most likeable with the best poise. I don't agree with his socially conservative policies but he makes sense fiscally. When he was talking up there I thought he made the best case, he actually sounded like a president and, unlike the rest of these jokers, isn't pandering. His record backs his mouth up.

Wow, nice reporting CNN. Check your facts . And while I am at it, the humor was a little off base seeing as though we are at war and facing an imminent recession. Ron Paul was not given nearly enough speaking time, clearly the media is dismissing him as a true contender, perhaps they should follow public polls a bit closer.

Would Ron's answer be (i'm watching the debate now) – "Sell NASA to US citizens as stock" – I know my liberal wife would buy NASA stock 😉

That is one thing a lot of people don't understand about our country/people – if it is a worthy/credible effort people will support it – americans will support a private NASA. We are the only nation with a private company that has made it to space, right? (Spaceship One)

What Huckabee said is completely compatible with the general Republican position: Hillary is a lesbian cannibal from outer space. Of course, the voters see through this sexist nonsense. Persist on this course, GOP; you'll get your butts handed to you in a basket.
