Oprah vs. Chelsea

Oprah Winfrey campaigned with Barack Obama, and Chelsea Clinton hit the trail with her mother..

WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa (CNN) – On a day when Oprah Winfrey is taking her first leap into the world of presidential campaigning by stumping for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in Iowa, Chelsea Clinton is also marking a first. It's the first time she's been out on the trail with her mother, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, during this election cycle. And guess what? They're also in the Hawkeye State.

An attempt to compete with the star power of Winfrey? Not so, said Hillary Clinton.

Answering reporters' questions, Clinton never mentioned the queen of daytime television by name. She did, however, say a trip with her daughter—and her mother, Dorothy Rodham, who also joined them Saturday—had been in the works but that the family kept running into "conflicting schedule needs," that is, until today, coincidentally.

Reporters weren't told about the addition of Chelsea Clinton until Saturday morning.

"It worked out that it was going to be [Saturday], and I'm thrilled to have them with me," Clinton said. "I've had a great time having my mother and my daughter with me. I hope I can persuade one or both of them to come back."

But the two sat quietly while the presidential hopeful spoke.

Asked if Chelsea would be making any comments at any point in the day, Clinton hesitated but stated simply, "I don’t think so."

Reporters were also curious whether Sen. Clinton was at all nervous that Winfrey would no doubt be hogging much of the spotlight Saturday.

At an unofficial campaign stop for breakfast—where reporters with cameras formed a quasi-fortress around the family's table—Clinton chose to answer by saying, "I'm having a good time. I'm just not sure I'm going to eat all of this in front of you. That’s the only thing I'm concerned about right now!"

To make it short – I have sense enough to not let Oprah sway my vote and that rings true of the majority of the women who understand what this is all about!

Why should race (25 millions), trump gender (150 millions)?
To be fair, this one belongs to a woman.

Overlooks the whole "issue' of 'democracy", doesn't speak for women as a whole; but, pretends to represent and honor the freedom held. Represents one woman-who has not earned, nor honored candidacys; instead has stolen the grace of others to maliciously take advantage of a position that even the smallest of people could challenge*in relations with her kin and the advantages that can be taken^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Oprah should stand for the president. She is black and she is a woman. Who needs Barak or Hillary when you got both in her.

As a politically aware and still undecided Democratic caucusgoer, I can't decide whether I am more impressed by the dog-and-pomny show of a hypercosmetic trash-talk-show queen shilling for an a unelectable and inexperienced tenement organizer, or the usually invisible investment banker daughter of a disbarred perjurer and unelectable panderer. Can anyone help me out? It's _so_ confusing to us plain folk.

Oprah vs. Chelsea? Are you kidding? That's comparing zircons to diamonds. Chelsea is the real thing: a highly educated young lady who has handled herself with grace throughout her life. Oprah, on the other hand, is an over-paid, ostentatious, spoiled celebrity who now thinks she can pick our next president. There are many other celebrities who endorse their favorite candidates without over-the-top, shove-him-down-their-throats, out-of-control rallies. There is nothing wrong with candidates having their families stump for them. They all do it and most voters like it. By the way, all those cars, etc., that Oprah brags about giving to her guests: they are provided by the manufacturers. Yet she always hands them out as if they are from her. Yep, she's a fraud, a zircon.

This is at the height of our modern malaise. Rich, famous, ambitious people stealing votes from the public to help other rich, ambitious people get into office. The founding fathers would never have imagined this kind of national nightmare, but I'm sure they would not have approved. Go to hell, Oprah. Hillary doesn't need a strong, well-known woman to campaign for her. Hillary IS that woman.

I only wonder when Socks, The First Cat, will be brought back to campaign for Hillary. He was helping to soften her image until he was dumped on Betty Currie when he was no longer needed. How telling...

Chelsea wins Oprah hands down. What does Oprah know about politics anyway?

Obama cannot win the nomination without help, not on his own merits, experiences, qualifications or money.

Chelsea seems the most honest of the three in the family. She is certainly more helpful than Bill to Hillary.

Hope Hillary will not start claiming Chelsea's experience as she did with her own. I will not vote for another Clinton or Bush, period. We have three hundred millions of people. Are these two royal families our only choices?

We have to protect our democracy by not bringing back dynasty.

Why when a famous black person support Obama, is the race card, why not when white supports Hillary, or a woman supports Hillary is considered as sexist? Why can it be Oprah, the american, supporting Obama, the american?
Would other candidates supporters say the same thing if Oprah was for them? I bet not.
Let it be. Americans, supporting americans.

A new Iowa poll was just released, and it has Clinton barely ahead of Obama. The numbers also include surveys from NH and SC, and Clinton is in big big trouble in both states. Link to all three polls here.

I've said this a few times already in relation to Oprah's influence on the campaigns.

Celebs give me energy to a campaign, more than they do votes. Timed right it can be very effective in motivating your volunteers and solidifying your supporters. But the star power can't change minds that are already made up. If someone is undecided and literally weakwilled about the election this might turn their vote. But these people are typically not among the actual people that vote in an election. Those couch potatoes that watch daytime talkshows are not necessarily going to walk in and vote in the election. Now that doesn't say her appearance has no effect. It just means that the media shouldn't overblow her effect on the campaign.

In the end, I forsee a bump in the polls of 2%. But these polls are with people that were called, and may not necessarily be people that would be going to the polling places. Polls are based on energy more than they are on actually gauging who will go in and vote. They try their best, but in the end it all comes up to Obama's message. If it resonates and pulls people to his campaign then he will accrue votes in the primary. If not, well it was a nice show of support by Oprah.

Telling it like I see it,

It was so enduring to see Senator Clinton with her mother and daughter symbolizing the warmth, depth and power that lies within the generations of all women’s lives. Senator Clinton demonstrates her values by engaging her family (mother and daughter) in this political process and not a cold, meaningless, mega rich celebrity. This is what makes us proud to support Senator Clinton and not the shallowness and meaninglessness of celebrity status found in her opponents tactics and mentality.

This country will do well with Hillary because Hilary will do well for this country.
I cannot believe the people who get their marching orders from "HATE" TV and "HATE" radio, it seems that most of them have loss the ability to think for themselves, as you can see from some of the comments which mirror the comments on hate TV and hate radio – check the newspaper comment sections. If they were really concern about where Hillary would take this country they would really be expressing their utter discuss about where the Bush administration has already taken it – which is down – way way down ! surplus long gone, thousands of lives loss for a completely unnecessary war, 1 trillion and counting taken from our national treasury – funds that our children and their children will need to pay for, 50 billion paid to insurgents to stop attacking our troops – al least for now or until we stop paying them again, 12 billion in 100 dollar bills they claim is just missing – the list of unbelievable stuff just goes on and on and with no lessons learned from the past ; the times when we gave weapons and billions to the Taliban who were fighting the Russians at that time as well as the northern alliance ( now the current leadership of Afghanistan ) not to mention all the weapons and billions more dollars we gave Sodom Hussein during the Iraq – Iran wars – this all after the horrific gassing this administration likes to point out and those plane load of weapons Ollie gave to the Iranians during the U.S. led embargo ? – Why and what for? Were any of those weapons sent to the insurgents in this Iraq war ?. Now days our economy is in shambles, we are on the verge of a recession, this administration has been wrong about so many things that our credibility and respect around the world has been badly soiled, as Scott McCulin said he lad to lend the bush administration some credibility, Tony Snow was kind with his “somewhat of an embarrassment” remark – so Do your homework folks – then decide – because one more Bush like neo-con like administration could well do us in! Our founding fathers prevail over the most powerful military on earth because bullets will never be a substitute for the will of the people – a well informed people ! Neo-cons should return to the toy soldiers of the youth and leave the real soldiers to leaders like Hillary who will make decisions as their commander and chief worthy of the service and their sacrifices !

Mr. Obama should considering puting Ms. Winfrey on the ticket. She has about the same qualifications and experience as he does.

No she doesn't, Obama's actually been in public office for 11 years, by the way that's actually longer than Hillary's 7 years in public office.

Even though i like Obama, I would not vote for him. Not because he is black, but because i dont agree with his proposals. To me it seems that Oprah isin't pulling for Obama because of what he proposes. I believe that she is endorsing him simply because he is black. I do like some of his ideas, but I believe Oprah should look past the fact that Obama is black and find a better reason to vote for him. CNN has a pole right now if celeberty endorsements affect their vote? About 137,000(95%) says it doesn't affect their vote white 7,000(5%) says "yes" it does affect their vote. That is a major difference and that is good. I don't believe that it should matter. Just because they are famous and some of them act it shouldnt create an influence on us. I dont care who a famous person endorses. THe real "influence" should be their plans and proposals! Not actors and actresses. As my mom says, "who cares what these people think. Who are they? All they are are actors and that's it. Why should their opinion be any more signifigant than mine?"

    I totally agree mom.

I have read the article and all the comments up till now and it seems most liberal democrats only care about the candidates' gender or race. They have allowed their politically correct ideologue to dictate their decision-making instead of logic and reality. Oprah is a racist, who panders to weak minded white middle-class woman with her dreadful show.

    December 9, 2007 01:09 pm at 1:09 pm |

Thanks Oprah for making it so black and white. So you support your black candidate and I support my white candidate...sorry did I say that. I am not that stupid. I will support candidate based on experience and their stand on issues.
