Bill Clinton: George H.W. Bush will help President Hillary

Bill Clinton said former president George H.W. Bush will help fix damage done to America's reputation by his son, George W. Bush.

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina (CNN) - Former President Bill Clinton said Monday that the first thing his wife Hillary will do when she reaches the White House is dispatch him and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, on an around-the-world mission to repair the damage done to America's reputation by the current president - Bush's son, George W. Bush.

"Well, the first thing she intends to do, because you can do this without passing a bill, the first thing she intends to do is to send me and former President Bush and a number of other people around the world to tell them that America is open for business and cooperation again," Clinton said in response to a question from a supporter about what his wife's "number one priority" would be as president.

A spokesman for the George H. W. Bush said Tuesday afternoon the former president supports his son's foreign policy and has "never discussed an ‘around-the-world-mission’ with either former President Bill Clinton or Sen. Clinton." (Click here for the full statement)

Clinton and the elder Bush, rivals in the 1992 presidential election, have grown chummy in recent years, often traveling and appearing at public events together. In 2005, they started a charity to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

UPDATE: The Republican National Committee issued this statement in response to Clinton's comments:

"In 2009, a Republican president will be working with our friends and allies abroad to continue to keep our nation safe," said RNC spokesman Danny Diaz. "The American people expect our leaders - both current and former - to present serious solutions to the very real challenges confronting our nation."

- CNN South Carolina Producer Peter Hamby

Bill Clinton's involvement on his wife's troubled campaign makes his wife look like a lightweight.

It's like calling your big brother when ever you are losing a fight.

Enough of the Bush and Clinton families. We need real change not the same two families. Both families have brought us to where we are now - do we want this to continue? I certainly don't.

It's funny that the international community is turned off by George W. Bush. I guess having a backbone and sticking to your guns is offensive to Euros and the assorted turd world leaders that now hate America. And since the first Bush and Clinton have no backbone, it makes perfect sense they'd be extending the gutless olive branch. Just pathetic...

What do Yugoslavia, Sudan, Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan have in common?
All were bombed by Clinton, most unilaterally. What do NAFTA, the WTO (Gatt) and free trade have in common? All were supported by Clinton. Who gave OPIC more money to move American jobs overseas, Bush or Clinton? Clinton! Will the stock market bubble of the '90's occur again? NO! Anybody But Clinton in '08.

Will Bill do this only if Hillary is elected? If so, sounds like he's serving his wife rather than serving his country. Time to get your priorities straight.

not sure I want Bill Clinton representing the USA. Under his watch the US was opened and led to Sept 11th. Would rather rely on a personal invite to business to come to America
The Clintons scare me more than the terrorists. At least we know what the terrorists stand for; with the Clintons no one is sure. We can't afford Hillary (She said) and I don't want to role the dice on my leadership choice.

What role is Jimmy Carter going to play? Isn't he full of great ideas about foreign policy? Bill needs to give it a rest.

For 2 years Bush Sr. has been pushing Hillary like she's the hottest thing since the iPod. Either he's gone senile or... someone is still loyal to the Republican party and thinks Hillary doesnt stand a chance in a national election.

Marvene, why do you decide that this article is negative against Clinton? It looks like a pretty neutral article that some people think is positive, and others think is negative. I personally think that its pointless, as Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr should do that no matter who wins the election.

Great move Bill! You have now tied Hillary to a Bush (no pun intended). Now Republicans will become more angered by the union of Hillary to ex-President Bush Sr. and at the same time Independents, Independent-leaning Democrats, and liberal Democrats will move away from Hillary due to her association with a Bush during her presidency.

We need to turn the page on this era of negative politics.

    OBAMA in '08!

The Clinton's are a joke. I can't wait for Bush to be done with his term, but Clinton and/or Obama are not what this country needs. Under Bill's watch, the Democrats lost control of the congress... Under Bush 2, the Republicans lost control of the congress... The funny thing is, that even with Bush's poll numbers in the toilet, the Democrat congress has even worse numbers than he does. I think I'll pass on the Democrat socialism, weak military, and tax increases.

And the folks who bring up Katrina can get over it. A Democrat mayor and Democrat governor didn't do their jobs and allowed that mess to get out of hand. The Feds are the last resort, it's the state's responsibility. And as far as the Feds bailing those folks out... I was angry to find out that those fine people down there were spending the Federal money (our tax money) to get tatoos, go to strip clubs, etc. I donated $2000 to help those idiots. Boy do I feel like a fool. Never again!

"Delve into Obama's negative back ground & report on his for a CHANGE of scenery & TOPIC"
That is precisely the problem for CNN & other media outlets. Obama doesn't HAVE a negative background. The worst anyone can find was that he tried drugs when he was a teenager... and since he's been open about that his whole life, it's kind of difficult to "delve" into it.

Hillary and Bill on the other hand.. well, they have volumes to dig into.. stuff that frankly they created themselves!

Yes the damage control mode in which the current administration has taxed us will be a substantial undertaking and will take many many years. The world will sigh with collective relief when the most incompetent, bereft of conscience and law breaking President the world has seen is no longer in office.

I want to hear how someone who isn't a Bush or Clinton is going to go around the world bringing a new message to the world from this great country. The last name Bush is not a good one anymore. He has his son to thank for that. Wow so Hillary's first act as president(yeah right.) Will be to send the ex president overseas to give the world a sense of how our foreign policy will change? oh please... this is stupid.

I don't think the people of the United States will ever vote a Republicsn president after the disaster that we are having now. The whole is watching and know what's happening of our country. We don't need a Republican president because it will be the same thing if not even worst than what;s happening to our country. Bill Clinton is right and I am glad he said that. Former President Bush will and I know he will, do everything he can to fix the problems that our President Bush has done to our country. Hillary Clinton I bet will do that......ask former President Bush and former President Clinton to fix our issues or problem that has been damage by our current president. This will be the best thing that former Presidents, not only former President Bush or former President Clinton but all former Presidents that would help fix our problems around theb world. This will be history. Imagine all former Presidents will be ask to help rebuild our country under Hillary's Administration. This will be GREAT PART OF HISTORY! Mr. Bill Clinton.......I know you and your wife will do everything in your power to cjange or rebuild our country.

I cannot wait to vote for our new President. Hillary is the best qualified so far.....strong, determined, experienced candidate to be the new President of the United States of America. I am so glad that you are running..........Mrs. Clinton. It is about time to rebuild our country..and I know you will do it. God Bless America.....God bless you too.
