Clinton gets emotional

The Clinton campaign is aiming to show a softer side of the New York senator.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Democrat Hillary Clinton got visibly emotional at an Iowa campaign event Monday morning designed to showcase a softer side of the New York senator.

Flanked by childhood friends and constituents who each offered testimonials on the Democratic presidential candidate, a glassy-eyed Clinton spoke noticeably softer than most past appearances on the stump.

"It is very exciting for me to have so many of my friends from my entire life who have come out here, to talk with Iowans, to answer questions, to give you some insight and information about our relationships, about what I've been trying to do my entire life, and particularly as an adult," Clinton said at a campaign event in Johnston, Iowa Monday.

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,” she said later in the event. “You can try to help somebody every single day, and I’ve tried to do that as a public servant, as an activist, and now as a senator."

The event coincides with a new campaign Web site - - that includes videos for several friends, colleagues, and constituents of Clinton's speaking on her behalf.

The event and Web site are all part of an effort to convey a softer image of Clinton, as polls continue to indicate Democratic primary voters view her as less likeable and more like a "typical politician" than her chief rival, Barack Obama.

A spokesperson told CNN the site will help round out what caucus-goers don’t know about Clinton. “You want voters to have the fullest portrait of your candidate possible when Election Day comes around and that’s what you’re seeing us doing right now.”

The surrogates from the Web site will be fanning out across Iowa and telling their stories over the next three days on Clinton's "Every Caucus Counts Tour."

Except that, as a memeber of the pitiful 110th Congress, she has not helped the America people yet this year....

I can't imagine Hillary would be under this intense scrutiny is she were not a woman. Her legs, her laugh, her hair, her makeup. She is not liked because of one fact and that is because she is a woman trying to run for the most powerful office in the world. People would be called bigots and banned from speaking publicly ever again if Obama were scrutinized because of his race. I could respect people alot more if they just came right out and said they personally don't want a woman in the White House instead of launching criticism about everything the woman does.

If she blew her nose in public people would say that she is trying to make people think she is sick to get sympathy votes. Why can't people just give her credit for BEING A POLITICIAN. A politician is a job. It's not easy. It's hard and like it or not it's a very nasty dirty business. Some people really make me think that they believe politicians are planting flowers in a nursery.

Give Hillary a fair shake sheesh!

The libs here who are talking about how she is human and have a heart are exactly the type of people who car salesmen dream of at night.

Nah, I don't buy it at all, these libs are just as mean, cold, heart-less, selfish, and rude as she is, but then again that is what it means to be a democrat these days. Just spend some time in a real blue area like Boston or NYC, then go to the middle of the nation in some nice red area. Observe how people treat you in both places, then decide your vote on that. If you do so let me just say thanks for voting republican. 🙂

Good to see Americans have finally woken up and learned to ignore the political theater, and focus on a candidates POLICIES. Its about time we stopped voting for President based on the things we want in a Prom King or Queen!

Oh, wait...not one mention of her policies in 16 posts.

Great. If you didnt learn from electing GW twice, your NEVER GOING TO.

Give the woman a break...She IS the one to hit the ground running from Day 1...She can fight off Republican attahces better than anyone out there now...Remember she was "Ken-Starred" to death and came out intact at the end. To me, a candidate who talks about Two Americas and then splurges on a $400 hair cut just isn't that viable; and a candidate who comes accross as a speechifying, polkitical-version-American Idol is just dreaming a little too much and needs to be pulled back down into reality.

    OH PLEASE!!!

This womans heart is as cold as the Grinch who stole Christmas. She probably had to pull out a nose hair or something to even generate a tear.

You know, it never stops! has any of you seen the footage? this is real, everyone of these candidates is stressed, tired and emotional. Sen. clinton has still to miss a vote in the senate, it is stomping every day, that takes a toll. have some respect too. this is not Jimmy Swaggart pleading to the congregation, this is a person that is loved by many and is thankful to see them out there for her. Incredible!

    JW from Denver,

See that is the problem right there. Elections in this country are like prom king and queen. What policy of Al Gore's did america dislike so much? they wanted a guy they "could have a beer with."

Your kind of politics is what the 97,000 Nader voters in Florida 2000 thought. "vote for something not against it" or some garbage like that. Look where it got us!

And the people on here are so rude. Hillary can't have friends? Nobody on here has met her, so all of your negativity is from heresay. At least she has DONE something to be critisized for unlike Obama, or Edwards for that matter.

Dear lord. This woman gets more pathetic by the day. To answer someone else's question, no, she doesn't have an authentic bone in her body.

The truth is no one will ever know who Hillary Clinton really is, and that's a sad truth because I have to believe that some time way, way back in her past she was her own person. She is smart, and she does care about children. It's too bad her absolute lust for power in a man's world turned her into what she is today, a ruthlessly calculating politician with absolutely no personal integrity.

What a shame that this is something actually admirable to some people.

How many tears does it take to buy a vote! Give me a break! Maybe she can cackle and cry at the same time and get the votes counted twice!

Sure, she's human and has feelings, etc., etc. But she is also one of the most calculating politicians running for President, and this stunt is clearly calculated and staged to put one over on those who are dumb enough to fall for it. Look at her record, folks, not her glassy eyes–then vote for Obama!

"What I try to do every day is figure out how to help somebody,"

of course the end of the statement was:

"and every day that person is me"

Virtually every one of you idiots bashing Hillary Clinton has destroyed the English language. Almost all of you cannot even put a simple sentence together, which causes me great consternation that loudmouthed idiots like you (voting for Edwards, Obama and others) are VOTING!! Do us all a favor and stay away from the polls, you are all too stupid!!!

LOL!...Give Hillary an Academy Award Nomination....because that's the ONLY Nomination she has earned so far. She's certainly NOT qualified for Presidential Office. Hillary speaks fiction, not truth! Anyone BUT Hillary! Please...there is NO softer side to Hillary. She is what she is...a hardnosed, spiteful power-driven half/woman with NO experience...who is trying to run on her husband's record. No way!

I Can't believe you Hillary haters! Where is all that coming from!
Yes! She wants to be president! And the rest of the candidates don't?
I can't believe the jealous, obnoxious, comments for a woman who has accomplished so much. What are you proving?
If you want to find someone to vet your anger on at least spit it on someone who deserves it! Like Bush, Cheney, and the Republicans who have damaged this country possibly beyond repair! Thats who you should hate!
