[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/images/02/19/art.hillaryad.cnn.jpg caption="Clinton’s Ohio ad is aimed at blue-collar voters."] (CNN) – Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign is reaching out to blue-collar voters with a new ad that says she can empathize with the travails of the night shift.
“You pour coffee, fix hair, you work the night shift at the local hospital,” says the announcer in the 30-second spot, ‘Night Shift,’ over footage of workers on the job.
“You're often overworked, underpaid, and sometimes overlooked. But not by everyone. One candidate has put forth an American family agenda to make things easier for everyone who works so hard. ….”
The ad ends with a photo of Clinton working at her desk at night. “She understands. She's worked the night shift, too.”
Clinton’s campaign has noted a strong showing in Ohio’s March 4 primary is critical to her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
So has Clinton worked the night shift? Spokesman Howard Wolfson said Tuesday that "the reference is to her working late at night at her desk."

People who have cars to build, tables to serve, offices to clean, cattle to feed, these are the ones who work hard! And these were some of the ones that lost their jobs whern NAFTA came along
As a social worker who really supports those who work the night shift, I think that this add is belittling and offensive. Sure, I’ve stayed at work late, so has my husband…but that is not at all the same! First, compare the salary that most night shift folks are making. Then look at the real issues of the night shift, my focus clientele are the children, and let me tell you about kids who’s parent work the night shift, many of them get up and get ready for school by themselves, come home to an empty house, care for their younger siblings and they are lucky if there is food in the cabinet to fix a meal.
Hillary makes a good salary, has child care, a descent working environment …I could go on and on. I think this add shows a real lack of understanding and may have the opposite effect then intended. Rather then indicating that she’s in the trenches with them, it shows her disconnectedness from reality thinking that she can compare the two.

She does try to become everything to everybody! But she just doesn't know what night shift work is, to someone who does it to put food on the table! Its not now & then its every night. Its almost never at a desk. She just appears so phony its hard to trust her.
I have to say that after all is said and done, the deciding factor for me and so many that support Hillary, is that when she had to face the worst situation that any woman (wife) would have to face, infidelity, Hillary put our country and her duties as First Lady first. Having been in that situation, I know the strong character it took to move forward and keep her marriage intact for our country and eventually for each other. This is a woman who has proven that she will always put her duties to the american people first!!
Hillary will say, or do anything that will help her get to where she wants to be. There is no truth in her. Everything she does is calulated and contrived as what she thinks voters want. I'm still amazed the race is so close.....are there that many people who still believe her?
do senators have any working shifts? They do not have to show up from 9-5 daily for the day shift, forget the night shift.
WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT????? What a farce. This is a slap in the face of every hardworking american out there. My father loaded planes "on the night shift" he was not sitting in some cozy warm office sucking down starbucks. Yet, he and my mother managed to raise 5 children, put us all through private schools, keep food on the table, etc. They worked exhaustively to raise me and my brother and sisters. Hillary has NO frame of reference for the type of hard work that the average American family knows. If my father read this he would be incensed.
Am I missing something, was Hillary president when NAFTA was signed? Even Obama said some remark about Hillary and NAFTA. He doesn't want to run against Bill Clinton so he needs to stop referring to his presidency like it was hers.
She definitely represents woman over the age of 45 who are willing to stay in marriages with men who cheat. There is a definite generational gap here. Most of my friends (20s and early 30s) find women who struck out on their own more inspirational than those who have to ride the coattails of a man to get ahead
Until She has worked a REAL night shift I won't believe it. When was the last time she had to clean a toilet or serve coffee. I'm not idiot!
I imagine that if Hillary was working the night shift, she was billing at somewhere around between $150 and 500/hour, and she had a maid. I don't think that's what the rest of American is talking about when they are pulling the night shift.
I guess that's why she's missing votes in the Senate lately, the rest of Congress works days.
There is no doubt in my mind that Hillary has worked the night shift. Being in the legal field myself, there have been times when I have worked until midnight. Some professionals are working constantly and that means 24/7 in one form or another. She knows how to deal with pressure and handle priorities. With all the difficult hours she puts into her work, she has a calm manner about her and speaks in a manner that everyone can understand. She has great qualities that will make her a great President.
This is so sad. Do they really think that everyone in this country is an idiot and these ads will influence us in a positive way?
You Obama fans need to take a breather. Not everything that Mrs. Clinton says and does is bad ! Get a grip, for once just listen to what she has to say with an open mind. You may not agree but do you all always have to insult? Thecracks about President Clinton are old and irrelavent. It's not news anymore. Come up with some new scandals that haven't been investigated ad naseum or don't say anything at all.
For those of us that have not only worked the "night shift", but also 72 hours straight with no sleep...
Guess which candidate has been known to work around the clock for several days without any shut-eye...?
That would be Hillary Clinton.
She is known for meticulous marathon research binges.
Hillary can and will deliver for Americans in a way that will jump start our economy and standing in the world.
Vote for America ... Vote Hillary!
Well.. at least she's not bashing anybody. The ad doesn't bother me and I'd rather see this kind of ad than a negative one.
Regardless, OBAMA '08!
Working late and working the night shift are not the same. I've done both and I would much rather work late. Hillary doesn't have a clue.
I love this add – in terms of dollars per hour worked politicians make less than anyone with similar education and about 1/100th of what they could. That said, it won't fly – and I still won't vote for her
i really respect hellary and her hard work for our nation but i think it's a time for us to give a chance for someone better
I would say its time to get out from behind the desk and fire the idiot who made this ad!
Go Barack 08!
Everyone who works hard, day, night, jeabs, suits, whatever... most of us have had to work the night shift. Stop being so cynical and judgmental. Honestly, you Obamaramas sure whine alot!
HOW FUNNY!! Hillary working the night shift – get real. The fake tears work better. Isn't it about time for them to start flowing again?
Wait... so that is how she has an extra 5 million dollars to use for attack adds??? WHAT A FAKE!!!!! I am tired of the clinton's thinking that poor people don't think!!!!
I agree with you Joseph. She has had such a privileged life.
I worked the night shift, double shifts, rotating shifts. Got cancer and got fired. I'd liked to she how she would deal with that. She has no idea what it is like for the average American. She lost my vote a long time ago.
