Clinton raises the stakes in new ad

Clinton launched a tough new ad Friday.

Clinton launched a tough new ad Friday.

(CNN) - The Democratic White House hopefuls took to the airwaves Friday to battle over national security credentials, with Hillary Clinton’s campaign releasing a tough new ad that pegged her as the presidential candidate best-prepared to take on foreign crises, and Barack Obama’s team responding with the re-release of a spot that painted him as the White House hopeful with the best judgment to be commander-in-chief.

“It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. But there’s a phone in the White House, and it’s ringing. Something’s happened in the world,” says the announcer in the 30-second Clinton spot, which is set begin running in Texas Friday. A phone rings insistently over images of sleeping children.

“Your vote will decide who answers the call. Whether it’s someone who already knows the world’s leaders, knows the military. Someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world.

“It’s 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?”

The Clinton campaign said the new ad - titled “Children” - is meant to make voters ponder “who they want in the White House during a crisis.”

Within roughly an hour of the ad’s debut, the Obama campaign announced that it was re-releasing “Gulf,” a 30-second spot that first ran prior to the Iowa caucuses. The ad features retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak, a former combat pilot who was the service’s highest-ranking uniformed officer during the first Gulf War.

“As a combat pilot and Air Force chief during Desert Storm, lives depended on the judgments I made,” McPeak says in the spot. “And judgment is what we need from our next commander in chief. Barack Obama opposed this war in Iraq from the start, showing insight and courage others did not.”

McPeak backed John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race.

Hillary is the most competent person to answer the call. Obama is not capable of handling our children's safety. Taking it to another level, he is not competent enough to handle the safety of America.

It is obvious that the Republicans are voting for Obama so that they can get Hillary out. Once they have Hillary out, they will take down Obama. Hillary is the only one that can debate McCain on the issues including experience. I would prefer to have Hillary picking up that phone at any time of the day. Democrates dont be fouled Obama will be eaten alive come November. Vote for Hillary if you want real change in the Washington DC. If you vote for Obama the White House will remain Republican in 2009.

If Obama answers the phone, I hope he has his writers next to him, so he will know what to say.........Wake up people!!! Hillary is the one prepared, apparently none of you have had the lovely experience of going to a hospital without insurance.....It is humiliating and very difficult to explain. And I hope the people who are backing Obama reallize his lack of knowledge in this case will be detrimental to our country. This is not the time to get on-the-job training, scare tactics???...oh yea, be afraid, be very afraid if Obama gets in the big house!!!!!

I beg your pardon, but Barack Obama is not a rock star. That would be Bill Clinton. He's the one that plays the sax.

From what we've seen Obama would let the call go to voice mail...a way to answer "present" as it were.

Hillary was under apparent stress this past weekend when she made several outrageous, frustration-filled comments. She threw a temper tantrum. She did not stay level-headed. Now, let me ask, is Hillary the person we want to handle a tremendously stressful situation, given her recent track-record of immature behavior? I say no!

Forget politics for a moment, but for the love of God or anything we worship or respect, Clinton's is rank politics. It is the lowest of low to use our children for this purpose. She can do anything else but please, someone please ask her to pull this Orwellian ad or re-work it without using children.

    I am full of fear!
I am so afraid the ignorant voters who put Bush in the WH will give us another amateur figure head president.
I am terrified that Barry Obama will get to the WH and be so strung out with his own self ,

Barry Obama in the WH SCARES THE LIVING BEJESAUS outta ME!

Unfortunately, HRC's record in the Senate shows that she should not be the one answering the White House phone at 3AM. She'd probably launch another war based on faulty information. If she can't make a sensible decision in broad daylight, how is she going to make a sensible decision in the early morning?

I want a president who at least knows who Putin's successor may be and understands the politics and motivation of Putin hand-picking that successor. During the last debate, Hillary showed how absolutely savvy she is about foreign affairs and her answer to the question of Putin's successor was detailed and on the money. Obama, when asked the same question, had no clue and sort of shrugged saying, "I think Sen. Clinton pretty well summed it up." Very typical: she has the answers and he says, basically, "Ditto."
I will sleep much better knowing a level-headed, seasoned, tested, experienced, balanced president will answer when that red phone rings in the White House.

i don't want her answering the call, i am so tired of scare tactics. This just proves that she shouldn't be our president.
Why would we want someone who voted for the war to answer that call.

Barack Obama needs to answer that call for the sake of our children.

  22. Vote for Hillary

I am mother of three and afraid if we elect Obama to our preseident. Our country will be a more mess like now. He's very ignorant and naive on the foreign policy. Obama can can the phoen, but he just talks. He can not execute the actions after answering the phone calls. He'd proably fumble and stumnle on the phone calls just all the debates.

Hillary will answer the phone and takes charge o f the course.

Please everybody do not wote for Obama. If he wins, I'll vote for McCain.

Maybe Obama should show a segment of Clinton when she got angry, asking "do you want someone with a temper like this, being that close to the nuclear button"

I want Hillary to answer that phone. I have been reading Obama supporters comments on this issue and I think they need to be realistic. They are using the argument of the fear factor. What our Country and the world are facing is REAL it is not a political tactic!!! What part of terrorist being intwined with economics do you not understand!!! When we went to war, President Bush has a 92% approval rating. Be honest and tell me how many of Obama supporters were part of that 92%. Do the math it speaks for itself. The American people wanted their sense of security back and rightfully so. But Mr. Bush lied to the people and the house. Why do you think Mr. Powell resigned his position? Hillary was not alone on this. In fact the superdelagates such as Dodd and Biden also voted yes and look who Dodd is supporting now!!!! Its OLD POLITICS AT ITS BEST! We need a President that will not be a puppet for these old time politicians and has the fight to stand up to them. Hillary Clinton has been showing her ability throughout this compaign. We need her strength to move foward while keeping our country safe!!!!! VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON "08"
