Kevorkian to run for office

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/03/12/art.kevorkian.gi.jpg caption="Kevorkian is planning a bid for Congress."](CNN) - Jack Kevorkian, the assisted suicide advocate currently on parole from prison, is planning a run for Congress, a Detroit newspaper reported Wednesday.

According to the Oakland Press, Kevorkian is planning to mount an independent bid in Michigan's 9th District seat currently occupied by Republican Joe Knollenberg.

"We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," Kevorkian told the paper. He also said his plans are in the "formative stage" and he would make a formal announcement next week.

Nate Bailey, a spokesman for Knollenberg, told CNN "the congressman is working on turning Michigan’s economy around and bringing jobs to Oakland County...He’s focused on working for the people of Oakland County, not on politics."

The one-time pathologist needs to gather 3,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot as an independent candidate.

Kevorkian has said he has helped well over 100 people die during the 1990s. In 1998, he was formally convicted on second degree homicide for assisting in the death of Thomas Youk, who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease.

He was released from prison on parole in June.

Oakland County Prosecutor Dave Gorcyca, who was responsible for sending Kevorkian to jail, told the paper he thinks the candidacy is merely a "publicity stunt."

CNN has been unable to get a comment from Kevorkian.

I just want to better understand something.
Jack Kevorkian was released early from prison citing ailing health, yet he is healthy enough to announce a bid for Congress?

That seems incredibly inconsistent with the statement,
""We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington," Kevorkian told the paper. "

Please let me know what you think so that I do not have the wrong impression about Dr. Kevorkian.

I'd say this candidacy has to be "dead in the water".

It is a sad day in America when a convicted murder who has served prison time and is still on parole has the gaul to put his name on the roll to run for any public office (even as dog catcher).

The fact that he feels comfortable enough to do this says something about the ethics and morality of America.

I wish him the best of luck and hope he wins and is able to convince those AMA clowns in Washington that our lives belong to us, not the government or the AMA. We should be able to decide for ourselves and not have some profit-seeking medical group make our decisions for us with the help of those paid Washington buffoons.

We already have a DR. Death from ILLINOIS. He's running for President. He wants to pull out of Iraq in 16 months win or lose. We have had 4000 men and women to die in Iraq, for what? So we can say sorry, our President was wrong to ever go there in the first place. Obama never voted for the war, so we are very sorry for the mess we made, your on your own. So, we don't need another one from Michigan, thank you very much

Why are people picking on Jack, as far as I'm concerned he did nothing wrong, and the right wing wacos put him in jail for easing somebody's pain.

If the time comes, and I hope that it never does, that I am terminaly ill and in a lot of pain I hope there is a guy like Jack that will help me die with dignity.

I asked for Jack a couple weeks ago and my e-mail was censored.

Can he be John McCain's running mate? That's where we need him.
