Bill Richardson to endorse Obama

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Obama will receive the endorsement of former presidential rival Richardson on Friday."] (CNN) - Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico plans to endorse Sen. Barack Obama in the Democratic race for president Friday, an Obama campaign spokesperson told CNN.

Richardson plans to join Obama at a rally in Portland, Oregon, at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

In an e-mail to supporters, Richardson said Obama will be a "historic and a great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

Richardson also said in the e-mail that he was touched by Obama's recent speech on race in America, saying he "understands clearly that only by bringing people together, only by bridging our differences can we all succeed together as Americans."

Richardson is the nation's only Hispanic governor. Hispanics have tended to support Obama's rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The choice to support Barack Obama by Bill Richardson is a good one. The fact that both are minorities will not be lost, nor the fact that they both are very insightful leaders that should bridge the gap that exist between all races shows a hopeful sign to a new America. I have long admired Richardson for his foreign policy expertise, and hope that the furture Obama administration can use this for a common benefit. Maybe even an OBAMA/RICHARDSON '08 ticket?

This is a powerful endorsement that could spell trouble for Hillary's Latino vote...

I wonder if Obama will tell him that he needs to swing his superdelegate vote to Hillary, since she won his state. Probably not he is a hypocrite.

I see that potential Vice president Richardson has finally decided who he will support and Obama is a good choice but it makes him look like a hanger on as to why he waited so long. ONCE UPON a time he looked like a pretty reasonable politician , waiting this long makes him look like JUST ANOTHER POLITICIAN.

Stars and strips to Senator Bill Richardson. Hullary, I am sorry to say, can not win unless MANY strings of unfairness, are pulled. Hence,
now is the time for all to get on board. If we wait another month, everyone will vote for "McBush" because there may not be enough of either Obama or Hillary to run in the fall.

This might just be the endorement that will end this mess. Hopefully Gore and Edwards will come out quickly to endore Obama as well.
The quicker we have a candidate to take on McBush the better.

the fact that obama has survived this latest barrage of "scandal" demonstrates, in the most powerful way so far, his ability to unite the country despite any attack that clinton, or mccain, can levy. he's a gifted politician, orator, and visionary that can, and i think will, be elected in the fall. we, as democrats, desperately need the groundswell of new support that he brings.

Shame on you BILL. You know he can't win general election without Hillary supporters. If he is the nominee my vote goes to McCain

Ok, come one Clinton backers, lets hear how he is a traitor just because he feels Obama is the best candidate. I always thought that an Obama/Richardson ticket was a dream ticket and now that may be coming into fruition.

    Obama 08!

If this was Clinton and her pastor did the same she would have to step down.
    Yet Obama gets Richardson's support.

What a PUtz. I thought that "the Superdelegates should back whoever took their state" Bill. Say one thing and do another, typical behaviour of Obama and the people that endorse him.

    Hillary 2008!

This is big!!! He is a very high-profile Super delegate that the Clinton's were trying VERY hard to get. And this is going to really hurt Hillary's "unelectable" argument since it will no doubt boost his Latino support a bit.

Other superdelegates should follow Gov Richardson's example and end the nomination process now before the Democrats are torn apart. Sen. Edwards should go ahead and endorse Obama now so that OBAMA will start to unify the party. In OBAMA we TRUST!
