Obama pastor cancels scheduled appearances

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Video clips of some of Wright's sermons have caused an uproar."]WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama's controversial former pastor, has canceled his plans to speak at church services in Houston, Texas, this weekend in the wake of the recent uproar over portions of his past sermons.

Video clips of those sermons caused a public stir this month after being widely circulated on the Internet.

The clips in question include several racially charged statements and accusations the U.S. government has adopted policies to systematically oppress African-Americans.

Racism looking for a reason to hate. You have been made to believe that you have found it. Keep it up and throw the baby out with the bath water.

That's the difference between a candidate making a mistake and the other shooting his foot by:
    1) Keeping silent, in the hope the bubble will not burst.
    2) Denying ever hearing inflammatory sermons.
    3) Recalling the inflammatory sermons and condemning them (after the fact and after the initial denial).
    4) Comparing a poor old grandmother to: (A) pastor Wright & (B) to a "typical white woman".
    5) Refusing to disown pastor Wright.
P.S.: Oprah, at least, had the GOOD TASTE of cutting her ties with pastor Wright and his Church.

One poster is right...... the world hates America because we go all over the world promoting a sham. Saying that we treat all people the same...when they can see in our own country this is not true. How can we expect to get respect when it isn't given to all of aour citizens?

Thank You Robin, it is not that we cannot tolerate freedom of speech but that journalists no longer remember their sacred duty to report with fairness so they set the agenda for the most divisive of issues. As at my last count there were only two journalists left in America- Larry King and Wolf Blitzer

This is shameful. I wonder how MLK would have been treated for his controversial sermons(Vietnam) and speeches in this day and age? MLK was a thousand more times militant than Rev. Wright. But then again, MLK was targeted by congress and eventually shot so that's probably an indication in itself! Wright and Obama can't even go to church anytime before Thanksgiving without causing issues? Shameful!!

You people really amaze me. You think you can judge an hororable man's life long ministry by hearing a 5 second snippet, taken out of contex. If you would take the time to listen to the entire sermon, you would better understand the contex of his words. Anyone who is honest with himself would have to admit that a lot of the hate that other countries have toward us was caused by our arrogance and intolerance toward other nations. But it is un-Americian for anyone of us to speak it aloud. America, we are who we are. So face it.

And by the way, after all the digging and probing that has been done into Senator Obama's affairs, all that you have come up with is something his FORMER PASTOR said. That should be enough to vote him is as President.

If you read Hitler's Rise To Power in the 1930s you will see that Hillary is employing the same tactics with her followers as Hitler did with the Nazis to gain control. Sig Heil! Hillary! 1933 all over again.!

How come when truth comes out, there is danger? What type of Human rights are Americans are talking about? We always condemn China for their slightest violation of human rights. Yet the US have killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis under the false pretense of war. What lies!
Rev. Wright said America kills innocent people. That happens to be the truth. And it is dangerous in America to speak the truth.

Mr. Wright is absolutely right. He is not a racist... He is a victim of ugly racism...
I challenge CNN to show all the ceremon in question and then poll all Americans.
You will find that more than 2/3 agree with him

The Rev. Wright scandal is not fundamentally about race. Obama wants it to be about race in order to distract from the real issue of the Rev. Wright scandal.

The real issue is Obama's judgement to have a nearly 20 year relationship with not only a minister, but a church, that promotes anti-American ideology and fosters hatred toward America.

You can attack Hillary all that you want, but conservative talk radio is waging a nonstop campaign against Obama, arguing that the Rev. Wright scandal renders Obama unworthy to be president. Conservative talk radio may hate Hillary, but they don't claim that she is unworthy to be president.

Obama can't duck the Rev. Wright scandal by answering his own questions that he poses to himself during a carefully controlled speech. He has to conduct open press conferences, like Hillary does, and answer tough questions on whether he is still worthy of the presidency in light of his support for a reverend and a church that promotes hatred toward America.

Walter, you hit the nail on the head with your comment about the "permission slip" for anyone having difficulty voting for an African
American. this is EXACTLY what they have been waiting for to pounce on. They had been dying for the chance to paint him, not as a candidate, but as a BLACK candidate. I can't believe all of what people have seen so far,... all of the hope that he has inspired.... the talk of unity.... the talk of moving the country forward..... IS ALL NEGATED by ONE person who speaks his (own) mind. (not Obama's). For supporters to use 'this' as a reason to back away means their support was tepid, at best. we are talking about a brilliant man who has transcended race, attended Harvard, is a United States Senator, and now is being treated like he should be the greatest fear of WHITE AMERICA. and the saddest thing is... your TYPICAL FEARS are allowing you to fall right into this trap.

to me.. it seems like it's... "HOW DARE YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO TALKS LIKE THAT"... and then go home to an uncle who is a nazi or a klan member..... or go home to a church that espouses blacks are only 3/5th human.... or go home and pretend that YOUR relatives or people YOU know have NEVER participated in the hatred that allowed slavery, jim crow, lynching, red-lining, profiling, or the systematic denial to blacks of the "American" dream.

The man has risen above all of that, and all of you.... and you will not allow yourselves to see it because you don't WANT to see it. Its easier for you, that way. Well.... continue to enjoy your blissful ignorance. And while you are at it, enjoy the $100/barrel oil, the continued war, the two recessions under Bush, the one to come under McCain, the joblessness, the corporate welfare, the cronyism, and everything else that you will have (AND DESERVE) under McCain (or even clinton).

Oh and one more thing.. You know the way Osama Bin Laden is making speeches, condeming the European papers for reprinting a comic strip... turning some commentary about some in the muslim faith into a holy war? You guys shouting down Rev Wright are doing the same thing. You guys who have threatened Geraldine Ferraro too. America has a loooong way to go.

Oh and to make it all better and holy again... "God Bless America"

Good, I'm glad he cancelled. Now the racist Anti American moron can find a rock he can hide under.

The good reverend will stay hidden, the Obama campaign will make sure of that, at least until after the next few primaries.

Like nObama, when the going gets a little tough, the good reverend and nObama need to remove themselves and find a good place to hide.

By the way, why did the good reverend accompany Louis Farrakhan to Lybia?

I'm sure they had lovely, kind words to say about the good ol USA, or as Jerimiah Wright call us, the U.S. of KKK of A.

Anyone who would sit through 20 years of Jerimiah Wright's venemous racist, Anti American trash talk is no better than the man spewing the hate!

If you'redriving a car and you know your buddies are going into a bank to rob it, you just sit on the curb silently waiting for them to exit then speed off when they do...

But wait, you get caught...oh no, you say...
