Clinton hunts for urban votes in Philadelphia

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/04/11/art.clintoncrime.ap.jpg caption="Clinton unveiled a new crime fighting plan Friday."]PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) - On the face of things, with its sizeable African-American population, Philadelphia looks to be friendly territory for Barack Obama by the time the Pennsylvania primary rolls around on April 22.

But Hillary Clinton is making a push Friday for the urban vote, holding two policy-oriented events in the city to spotlight the twin issues of crime and the economy.

Appearing at a YMCA in west Philadelphia this morning with Mayor Michael Nutter, who yesterday signed into law a series of controversial anti-gun measures, Clinton unveiled a plan to cut the national murder rate in half.

Introducing Clinton, Nutter urged the federal government to provide more assistance to mayors around the country working to put ex-offenders back to work and protect families from violent crime

“Here in west Philadelphia, we’re worried more about Al Gangsta than al Qaeda,” Nutter joked. “Osama bin laden and some of those other folks couldn’t last five minutes in west Philadelphia.”

Though Clinton did not outline a target date for reducing the murder rate, Clinton said she plans to do so by putting “100,000 new police officers on the beat” in cities nationwide and providing grants for community partnerships, reducing gang violence and after school programs. She said as president she would renew the assault weapons ban, which Congress let expire in 2004.

“It is a sad day in America when the president can find hundreds of billions of dollars to police another country’s civil war, but cuts funding for police officers right here at home,” Clinton said.

Clinton offered praise for a program instituted in New York City by her old rival: former mayor Rudy Giuliani. The program, called COMPSTAT, compiles statistics as a way to hold law enforcement bodies accountable for crime reduction. Giuliani often promoted the program while campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

After the speech and before heading to an economic event with Nutter at Drexel University, Clinton roamed the corner of Chestnut and 52nd streets shaking hands with voters, while supporters of both Obama and Clinton jammed the block and cheered for their respective candidates.

"Tell mayor Nutter this is Obama city," yelled one man, needling the African-American mayor for endorsing Clinton. But the Obama fan shouted a caveat: "I still love you, Hillary."

Clinton talks about the issues that affect us as Americans while her opponents engage in personal attack politics.

This is why she will win and win big.

Wake Up America !!! Obama is for change but has no real plan on how or what he is going to change ... He also needs cooperation in the Senate & Legislative bodies in order to accomplish anything...it could take him 2-3 years just to get things started... We Do Not have
that convenience to allow that amount of time or experiment with an inexperienced President any longer... Your country is in grave danger financially... The only candidate that can get the economy back on track and get our priorities in order is Hillary Clinton... The American people voted for George Bush because he was a nice guy and had sound morals and look what we got ... Voters Beware ... If you vote for Obama once again we may not get what we are bargaining for and in fact we may get more than we are bargainig for if there are delays or it takes longer than necessary to get the right programs in order to stabilize the country... We don't have TIME to play I wanna be president because... Wake up people... Vote Hillary Clinton God Bless America !

The new test for Commander in Chief is ... Can I get through one speech, townhall, rally or press conference without lying? Nope, you already failed miserably on this one ,too, Hilldog, because you took a breath. Those lies roll off your lips so often they should name a lipstick afer you: Hilly's Lilylivered, Lyin' Luminescence for you lips by Duck and Cover Girl!

Is it just me, or does Barack have the biggest ears in the world? He looks like if he could flap them, he'd be able to fly.

I tried to post this under the article with Barack's picture on it, but naturally, since most of the posts were anti-Obama, the Obamabot moderators in Atlanta shut the comments off very quickly like they always do when they get too many (in their minds) anti-Barack postings.

When it comes to a question, of judgment how can anyone with any ounce, of common sense say that you would trust the judgment, of a person who stays with their husband, after countless affairs? She has a real discerning eye, for things… but then again we all know she makes her truth her reality. Duck… look out, for the sniper fire!

Hopefully they will try and remember why the Clinton years were good and not all the stuff the republicans kept pushing to discredit him. I also hope they remember WHY they thought he was the first Black President, because he was working for them, to help them get equal rights and to get ahead. Everyone had it better then. Obama does not have the experience nor the knowledge to get this country back on its feet and keep it safe. He would be better off dropping out now and trying again in 4 or 8 years. That way we keep the Whitehouse.

Americans, you had two big liars stayed in your white house for last 15 years. A lot of you have lost savings, jobs, houses even lives. You deserve better. No more liars!

  11. Vote for ideas or for a person?

Will black voters in Philadelphia remember that Obama was the only candidate not present at Dr. Martin Luther King's anniversary? Will it matter to them that Obama was "too busy" since his priority is really "white voters". Do they realize that at the end at the national election "white voters" represent a much bigger percentage than "black voters"?. So, does race really matters after all? Or is it gender and concrete ideas/actions perhaps a more important element to be considered?...

Sorry, Hillary. The African-American population will see to it that one of their own is selected as nominee, even though he is a do-nothing/know-nothing.

I wonder how Pennslyvanians view Hillary appearing with Nutter who has signed into law a series of controversial anti-gun measures. Does this reflect Hillary's view on gun laws nationally or even in the state of PA?

You know what I'd like to see?

A contest between Hillary, Obama, and Bill to see who can lie the most.

Wow! Now that would be a tough competition!!

And a high scoring contest indeed!!

And you American women are voting for Hillary because she is a women, and that is so pitiful. I would love to see a woman in the White House, not this one. If you would just stop and think. This woman has lied, can't run her campaign, can't pay her bills. How on earth do you think that she can run a country this size? Oh, I forgot, you are probably uneducated. You make you wish I was born male.

who will shed light on those who seek to influence an Obama White House? Kenneth Griffin, a major donor of the Obama campaign, who, acording to Matthew Mosk and Alec Mc Gillis, had just hired a team of lobbyists to urge congress to preserve a lucrative tax loophole?

Or maybe another of his bIllionaire Bundlers James Crown who directs General Dynamics, they have benefited directly from the Irq war and at least one of Obamas earmark in the program of the Army's Bradley fighting vehicle? (Also acording to the investigative Jounalist afore mentioned.

Or could it also be Neil G. Bluhm, who is setting up a controversial, major Casino complex in Pennsylvania?

Let's take another look at all this!

    Katherine:

I hate to burst your bubble, but white women do not overwhelmingly support Hillary Clinton's run for the Democratic Party nomination for president. As a matter of fact, I am a white woman who has over 30 white female friends and we ALL SUPPORT OBAMA.

    When women vote, Democrats win....
    Again,not necessarily true.

If Hillary steals the nomination from Obama, we have decided to vote for Ralph Nader or the Green Party candidate, anyone but McCain or Hillary.

Katherine: it doesn't sound to me like your being patriotic. Sounds more like white women supporting white women, not the country or what's best for it. Olivyl, popeye's girlfriend, could be running and as long as she's "white", she'd get the majority vote of white women. And then you indicate if the white woman loses the nomination, then you'll give your vote to McCain, a member of the opposite party with a different message and approach altogether who happens to be white! Do you even hear yourself? I think I know what's going on with you and it ain't nice.

Hillary hunting for urban voters. She better hunt hard and hope
they don't watch T.V. or read the Headline News. The longer
Hillary stays in the race, the more against her own party she will
be. I think Hillary acts and sounds more like a Republican.

She desperately need to get the focus off of herself and back onto the issues. Her personal negatives are very high – and in the end, I believe this is what will doom her as a candidate.

It's hard to argue with putting out more police – especially in an urban area like Philadelphia. But how will you pay for it? And do you really believe that the FEDERAL government should be paying for local police? Remember what happens when the Federal govenment starts intruding into public schools – the restrictions and mandates that come with the money defeats the entire purpose.

Hilary has proven one thing for sure this campaign, that shes a liar and thats a undeniable truth.

Obama is the only canidate with some integrity and heart.........also NOT a liar unlike our female friend.

Ps if you vote for mcinsane you should feel ashamed as a american, i dont like hilary but i would vote for her over mcain anyday.

I think the reason more obama supporters would vote for hilary vs mcinsane is because their the ones who actually use their brain, lol this is pretty obvious.

From his radical stance on abortion to his prominence in the corruption scandals that has been virtually ignored by the mainstream media, Barack Obama is not fit to be Senator - not to mention the next President of the United States.

Obama has declared his presidential intentions, but it is up to well-informed and energetic conservatives like you to spare our nation from the scourge of a far-left President Barack H. Obama.

Do you research, the "VOTE HILLARY".
