Clinton hunts for urban votes in Philadelphia

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/04/11/art.clintoncrime.ap.jpg caption="Clinton unveiled a new crime fighting plan Friday."]PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) - On the face of things, with its sizeable African-American population, Philadelphia looks to be friendly territory for Barack Obama by the time the Pennsylvania primary rolls around on April 22.

But Hillary Clinton is making a push Friday for the urban vote, holding two policy-oriented events in the city to spotlight the twin issues of crime and the economy.

Appearing at a YMCA in west Philadelphia this morning with Mayor Michael Nutter, who yesterday signed into law a series of controversial anti-gun measures, Clinton unveiled a plan to cut the national murder rate in half.

Introducing Clinton, Nutter urged the federal government to provide more assistance to mayors around the country working to put ex-offenders back to work and protect families from violent crime

“Here in west Philadelphia, we’re worried more about Al Gangsta than al Qaeda,” Nutter joked. “Osama bin laden and some of those other folks couldn’t last five minutes in west Philadelphia.”

Though Clinton did not outline a target date for reducing the murder rate, Clinton said she plans to do so by putting “100,000 new police officers on the beat” in cities nationwide and providing grants for community partnerships, reducing gang violence and after school programs. She said as president she would renew the assault weapons ban, which Congress let expire in 2004.

“It is a sad day in America when the president can find hundreds of billions of dollars to police another country’s civil war, but cuts funding for police officers right here at home,” Clinton said.

Clinton offered praise for a program instituted in New York City by her old rival: former mayor Rudy Giuliani. The program, called COMPSTAT, compiles statistics as a way to hold law enforcement bodies accountable for crime reduction. Giuliani often promoted the program while campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

After the speech and before heading to an economic event with Nutter at Drexel University, Clinton roamed the corner of Chestnut and 52nd streets shaking hands with voters, while supporters of both Obama and Clinton jammed the block and cheered for their respective candidates.

"Tell mayor Nutter this is Obama city," yelled one man, needling the African-American mayor for endorsing Clinton. But the Obama fan shouted a caveat: "I still love you, Hillary."

You would have thought, you know, that she'd robbed a bank the way they carried on about this," he added. "And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11 at night, too." Bill Clinton said this. Who would have thought.... It seems to me that if Hillary forget something because she was tired at 11pm, then she wont be able to answer that phone at 3am. Not only will she lie if she do but she will also make the wrong judgment and we the people will suffer.

Look at your gas prices, prices of food, living condition, etc. – and you'll know WHY we need the Clintons back in office. Sometimes, to move forward, we need to move backward a bit and tap in on our experience.

    Hillary 2008!

The Clintons both speak with a forked tongues. I would not believe a word that either of them said unless I saw it for my self.

    Kathrine sweetheart.

I have been reading the ticker for awhile now and all I see is you going from one blog to the next trying to pump your Rezko story. I think you should have noticed that no one is listening to you except Hillbilly supporters.

The Jig Is Up Kat, find a new line of questioning. You starting to sound silly.

Why don't we comment on what this article is really about – the reduction of violence in our inner cities?

I like Michael Nutter. I hope he does very well as mayor.

This is like when McCain went to Memphis to apologize about his vote against MLK day...she has no chance of winning Philly despite her efforts to appear concerned about the inner cities.

She went because she probably promised Mayor Nutter she would come up with some crime fighting plan and unveil in it Philly in exchange for his endorsement.

She won't be talking about this come tomorrow when she goes back to IN-trust me.

Hunting votes in "urban" philly, she knows she doesn't have a chance in hell. Better focus on selling that crap of a campaign to the blue collar workers and elderly

How Bill Clinton got my vote when he run for office, I can't still explain. The more he speaks the more he exposes himself as a pathological liar.

For Chirst sake, Hillary "mispoke" about Bosnia snapper fire not one time or two times or three times. In her stump speech she repeated many times, different days at different locations.

Does Bill want us to believe at each time it was 11 at night and at each time she was tired?

I don't want her waking up at 3 AM to answer the phone when my alarm goes off. I will be dead before she lies again.

Goodbye!!! madam Clinton, au revoir!!! I hope this becomes your last campaign for anything.

Hillary I thought you had Philadelphia all sewed up. Money isn't the probem it is your lied that has caught up with you, and the voters are not buying what you are selling. Try Avon that works very well.

Katherine – when you roll out example after example about Barack's negative you have to realize the exact same thing, and some would say it would be much worse especially considering the Republican target on her, can be done with Hillary.

Support Hillary all you want but you better realize that applying the standards you are applying to Barack to Hillary will result in the same conclusion. That they are both unelectable. Therefore, it hurts your "party first" argument.

Yes, Obama does have money, but it comes from the people who want him to be elected. If the Clinton's would stop lying maybe people would send them money. Hillary has to beg for money to cover her campaign and she can't even pay her bills, so I don't think there is an issue with Obama asking the people who want him elected to donate money. At least he doesn't have the big Clinton machine backing him like hillary does. And they are not very nice people. And what did the Clinton promise all their big donors?????

At least she showed up!!! With Obama not wanting to be viewed as black these days (not going to memphis for the 40 year memorial of Dr. King's death), it's good to see that Hillary and John McCain aren't afraid to be seen with majority black audiences. We blacks in America had better wake up before it's to late!!! If Obama will throw his own grandma under the bus to get votes, what do you think he cares black people.

All Obama and his campaign is interested in is MONEY.
He's been given much hard earned money by his supporters, yet now I hear he doesn't want to pay the "street Workers" in Philly who are busting their butts working for him. He's acting as if he's the one who worked for this "easy money".

He's also trying to break his pledge to accept public financing for the race. He's come up with a good one.......he's now saying that getting donations online is " parallel public financing", pretty much the same as public financing as we know it.

Come on PA NC IND.........don't be taken in by the worms and squirms. Vote Hillary......she's the one!

Hlllary just has to be herself to win blue-collared votes. Obama is out at bars drinking beer, feeding calfs, BOWLING, and spending millions on advertisements.

April in TX, would you please give it up! All your nasty comments are very irritating. Hillary is the number one choice, she just needs to get around this obstacle called Obama, who incidentally is BUYING his votes, not earning them.

To Katherine below and general, I do not agree entirely with ALL of Obama's "toxic" connections. Even if some of them are true I don't see how that affects his patriotism and how that in turn is going to manifest itself later. There is not much a president can do by himself.

You will be surprised if you fish out all of Bill Clinton's connections, to find all kinds of crooks in the list.

Why do Obama haters pile up such abstract criticisms? Why not discuss concrete issues?

On the other hand integrity and honesty are more important values for a president. You are a taxpayer and you should be indignant about the way Clintons handle money. And that too after having sustained so many lies from the Bush admin. how can you be so STUPID as to vote for Hillary?

If she is the most qualified why is everybody donating to Sen Obama? She cannot even pay her bills it seems to me she would be the one getting all the money and he would be the one struggling. The money, the vote, and the delegates don't add up to what her supporters claim.
