Clinton hunts for urban votes in Philadelphia

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/04/11/art.clintoncrime.ap.jpg caption="Clinton unveiled a new crime fighting plan Friday."]PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) - On the face of things, with its sizeable African-American population, Philadelphia looks to be friendly territory for Barack Obama by the time the Pennsylvania primary rolls around on April 22.

But Hillary Clinton is making a push Friday for the urban vote, holding two policy-oriented events in the city to spotlight the twin issues of crime and the economy.

Appearing at a YMCA in west Philadelphia this morning with Mayor Michael Nutter, who yesterday signed into law a series of controversial anti-gun measures, Clinton unveiled a plan to cut the national murder rate in half.

Introducing Clinton, Nutter urged the federal government to provide more assistance to mayors around the country working to put ex-offenders back to work and protect families from violent crime

“Here in west Philadelphia, we’re worried more about Al Gangsta than al Qaeda,” Nutter joked. “Osama bin laden and some of those other folks couldn’t last five minutes in west Philadelphia.”

Though Clinton did not outline a target date for reducing the murder rate, Clinton said she plans to do so by putting “100,000 new police officers on the beat” in cities nationwide and providing grants for community partnerships, reducing gang violence and after school programs. She said as president she would renew the assault weapons ban, which Congress let expire in 2004.

“It is a sad day in America when the president can find hundreds of billions of dollars to police another country’s civil war, but cuts funding for police officers right here at home,” Clinton said.

Clinton offered praise for a program instituted in New York City by her old rival: former mayor Rudy Giuliani. The program, called COMPSTAT, compiles statistics as a way to hold law enforcement bodies accountable for crime reduction. Giuliani often promoted the program while campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

After the speech and before heading to an economic event with Nutter at Drexel University, Clinton roamed the corner of Chestnut and 52nd streets shaking hands with voters, while supporters of both Obama and Clinton jammed the block and cheered for their respective candidates.

"Tell mayor Nutter this is Obama city," yelled one man, needling the African-American mayor for endorsing Clinton. But the Obama fan shouted a caveat: "I still love you, Hillary."

Oh WOW – all of a sudden Hillary cares about crime in America???? Give me a break. She needs votes folks, she is not a community-oriented politican and she is hard pressed to even act as though she cares about gangs, killings in American neighborhood – until now when this stupid Mayor is endorsing her and trying to get his political stragey thru – they are using each other.
Hope voters are smarter than that and I know they are

    Go Obama

Positive campaigning (credit to Stacy Clarks from TX) from an Obama supporter:

    1. Hillary has been a known advocate for the welfare of America's children.

    1. Obama has the character of the men and women who fought against injustice.
    2. Obama has been truthful in all of his dealings so far.
    3. Obama embraces everyday Americans, no matter rich or poor, white or minority.

Is her crime plan to be sending body armor to Philly? Better do LA and Detroit too.
Money only buys ads, not votes. But to the lemmings who believe the ads......they can't think for themselves.

Clinton needs to get more agressive against the Urban Vote

Obviously the Blacks live there and i bet she could garner up about 25 percent of the BLACK vote if she start concentrating in the Urban Areas

Its kinda funny how racists blacks are, but oh well, also she already has the Rural Vote tide up so Obama and his dumb Teamsters are just wasting their time and money

Just checked the delegate counter on CNN.

Hiliary could win every remaining state by double digits 55-45, including superdelegate and OBAMA WOULD STILL WIN. And of course Hiliary will not even come close to winning 55-45 in every remaining state.

ITS OVER, is she mentally ill? YOU CANT WIN, just drop out. And no, its not because your a women its because YOU WANT WIN. If Obama was in your position he would of been asked and pressured to drop out as well.

Just from listening to the people who back Obama, I wouldn't vote for him because of you. Hateful and spiteful. But, of course, who are you?

Hillary and Bill Clinton are so corrupt and the people do not understand how corrupt they are. When she is asked a question, she
forgets. Well, if she is so forgetful, she do not need to be president
because she not answer the"RED" phone @ 3a.m. in the morning.
go to dick morris.com and newsmax.com and read it daily and go into
the archive and read up on Hillary. Why would Hillary have a republican running her campaign unless she is a Republican (Mark Penn), running on a Democratic ticket . What about Hillary's religion: Fundamentalist Group called "The Family" and there are others John Edwards, and John McCain. I think this is a disgrace on Hillary's part. She will do anything to get elected.

I still can not believe that people are calling her "Billary"... all of you need to quit judging her on Bill Clinton's record... you need to look at her record... you will find that she is against a lot of the things her husband believes in... you will also find that Obama voted and agrees with almost everything she believes in...

you talk about character and judgement... last time I looked both Obama and Clinton are politicians... the odds are not in either ones favor when it comes to character and judgement... what all of you should focus on is who is more qualified and has the experience to get our country out of the hole GW put us in!!!

  18. if only

If only this was a primary and not a Hillary Clinton witch-hunt and and Obama American idol fest.

Obama repeatedly mispeaks, recants his statements, back peddles and laughs off difficult questions. Everyone thinks that makes him human, nice and affable.

Clinton is required to be perfect. What a hate-based double standard.

Here's the thing. Bill Clinton has made loads of money since he left the white house making speeches. NOTHING illegal in that and NO conflict of interest when his wife runs for president YEARS later. Bill did not give any speech regarding what his wife's position -years later- would be on the Colombian free trade agreement.

The Media continually asks Hillary Clinton ridiculous and irrelevant questions. Like asking McCain if he drinks beer from his wife's company. Just silly crap. The Clintons are not required to divest themselves of anything remotely constituting conflict of interest UNLESS she wins the nomination. That is the same for ALL candidates.

  22. the best

Clinton is the only candidate with the knowledge, ability and experience required to turn this Nation around.

We do not need socialism nor do we need a protracted Iraq war.

Nor do we need constant racial distractions as we try to move the Nation forward. I say the race issue will keep popping up, the race card will keep being pulled, and we will have a 4 year discussion on race... and no progress will be made on the many issues.

We need someone with common sense and a centrist platform who views all Americans as equal and will work tirelessly for us all.
Hillary is the best suited for the challenges ahead.

How could anyone in their right mind vote for either one of these Dems. Scary because they both have shadowed pasts and could be very embarrasing if either were elected to run this country. We need a true American that doesn't lie, cheat or steal the American dream from the tax payers which are the ones that will continue to suffer because the filthy rich who currently run this country are all corrupt. Sad but True

Kathrine? You speak as if you're every white woman in this country, you should step down off your high horse before it bucks you off. NEWSBREAK...you're not every "white woman" in this country. Politicians brush shoulders with all types of people that want to have an influence in Washington, interestingly enough Obama does his homework and when a lobbyist wants in he makes stipulations for that person and uses a degree of judgment that the Clinton's don't have.

Furthermore, all you sugar coated America lovers out there need to get off this Dr. Rev. Wright thing, last I checked they usualyy have Sunday school for kids to go elsewhere while their Pastor is ranting. This man was in the Marines serving his country and also in the Navy in a medical capacity. He isn't anti-semitic, anti-America or anti-white, he is anti establishment which most of us should be unless maybe you've been a mortgage broker for the last few years. Just because this man tells some un-politically correct views he has of the establishment doesn't make him a racist.

Anyone you thinks otherwise, please forgive me, is an '"idiot"!!!!

    Have a nice day America!

  25. in the know

    Please make the right choice.

Obama is a slick politician that can evade all tricky issues and tough questions.

Hillary is an imperfect politician but a true believer in freedom and democracy for ALL. She will not always be right, but she will always work to create a better Nation for us Americans.

    Go Hillary.
