[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/04/21/art.clintondebt.ap.jpg caption="Hillary Clinton began the month with $10 million in debt."](CNN) - Hillary Clinton began one of the most crucial stretches of her presidential campaign in debt, newly disclosed financial reports show.
According to campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission over the weekend, the New York senator began the month of April with close to $32 million cash-on hand. But only $9 million of that total are funds that are able to be spent in the primary races. The report also showed Clinton owes more than $10 million, meaning the Democratic presidential candidate was in the red even before she heavily stepped up television advertising in Pennsylvania.
"The numbers are what they are," Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson said on a conference call with reporters. "The money continues to come in strongly. We had a very good month last month of fundraising…we are continuing to have a good month this month."
We will of course be honoring the debt in the coming weeks and months," he also said.
The newly released reports offer the clearest picture to date of just how much of an advantage Barack Obama holds over Clinton heading into the final stretch of the prolonged Democratic race for the White House.
According to the reports, he began the month with over $42 million to spend during the presidential primaries and only carried around $650,000 in debt. Obama has $52 million cash on hand overall.
As has already been disclosed by both campaigns, Obama more than doubled what Clinton raised in the month of March: $41 million to her $20 million. The Illinois senator's stunning haul brings his presidential fundraising total to date to $235 million - $60 million more than what Clinton has raised in the same time period.
John McCain lagged both Democrats in March fundraising - pulling in $15 million in that time period. He began the month with $11.6 million cash-on-hand and, a debt of just over $700,000. He's raised a total of about $75 million.
The report also shows he gave back nearly $3 million from donors for his general election campaign. This move could indicate he is setting the stage to receive public financing for his campaign - an option that will infuse the Arizona senator with $84 million.

It is understandable. She is facing Obama who is supported financially by almost every African Americans. They dream to have the first AA president from Obama. In fact, Hillary has raised a lot of money, if compared with McCain.
margie,
It is the people who are supporting Obama's campaign. Even if billionaires are supporting him. I bet their monies doesn't out weigh the monies Hillary has gotten. Obama campaign is getting monies from supporters who simply want change.
Pa citizens, Please don't give HRC the opportunity to bankrupt our country fiscally or morally.
Gee, I was wondering when Obama was going to get some positive air time here. I'm not surprised Obama has generated so much in donations while Hillary is endlessly in debt. We Obama supporters may not be rich, but there are a lot of us!! Let's go PA!!! YES WE CAN.!!!
Who has more money to spend in the General Election where it matters? Barack or Hillary? The answer is Hillary. Barack has raised millions to buy the nomination--which if he wins, will be the case. Just like the Tobacco industry polluted the airwaves with false advertising on how cool it was to smoke, Barack has done the same with himself. The voters will find out how bad he will be for the United States much later.........
Obama has over 1.3 million individual donors and people say he has a few billionaire backers??? Come on people. Obama has captured the heart of America and is poised to take the white house. I remember reading an article yesterday how Hillary was doing much better with online fund raising capturing a whopping 6,000 donors.... If someone can't run her campaign and knowingly goes into further debt for a losing cause, where do you think she will take our money... she will run us into the ground just like her campaign. Good Job Hillary, do the party justice for once and drop out.
And I find it funny many of my posts simply disappear after a while.... I guess The Clinton News Network doesn't want that many arguments against their girl.. too bad there are more and more each day.
and cnn or any of the other news broadcasters will put this on the news
if it was mcsame or barack it would be played over and over again
wow - we know who the newscasters and journalists are backing/
its a outrage
I don't want her handling my public monies.
How can we ever elect a President that is in debt. None of these candidates cares about important topics like balancing the budget, and avoiding a recession. If they can't stay in the black with the millions they bring in, how can we ever expect them to understand the people who are stuck with recession fears due to a weak economy fueled by DEBT. As a country we need to just buckle down, and realized that once we are out of debt, we can control our own destiny. Politicians on both sides are just selling us out to the highest bidder and they will take off before the bill is due.

This is how she will run the country.
This is it.
$109 million for her and ask us...for $5.00 or $10 bucks. Greedy elists.
I will stay home. I will not cast a vote, if she steals this from Barrack. First time in over 35 year. I can't. It would be deceitful going against my everything I am made of.
Maybe her campaign wouldn't be struggling as much if Al Gore would've been elected President...what a joke....Bottom line is she expected Super Tuesday to be her coronation as the Democratic Candidate. She just didn't factor the movement of Barack Obama into the equation
Hillary why aren't your supporters giving you any money? I guess they are jumping ship, like my family did 🙂
Her campaign is in debt and she has had two major shake-ups. If her campaign is managed this badly then what will her White House be like. I think its time for her to return to New York. Things have been falling apart there since she left.
Obama '08 and '12
Fred – before you come on here and make stupid, racist comments learn to spell. It's OPRAH! Obama has many white supporters as he does Black, Hispanic, Asians, etc.
If there was an elections for ignorance, you'd definitely get my vote.
Barack means Blessing. Whom God has blessed, no man or woman can curse. I only wish Bill would be the great statesman he is and embrace Obama after the PA primary contest which could ultimately wrap up this nomination. Its all about timing!
YES! So much for her lousy leadership! Imagine if she is elected!
Hey Hillary – if you can't stand the heat – get out of the kitchen!
By the way – we don't need a tough leader – that's why we have troops!
It's great to see the rookie/underdog bring the Clintons down!
Go Obama!
Since Barack is spending 3 to 1 in PA I guess I will send him $300 this time.
PS- Fred- Oprah has not given me 1 penny.
Obama 08
Yes she is operating in the red, because she does not have the NAACP, OPRAH The only thing you Obama supporters have not figured out yet but you will. OBAMA will be the above mentioned people's Boy when if he ever gains office. If that's what you want, then you're on the right track. I will cover the (BOY) thing right now. It is not meant to be a racist remark. I would say the same thing about HILLARY is she had theses go-goods supporting her only i would say, (ThEIR GIRL). But she does not answer to them or anyone else. She will lead this country back on track like the Clintons of the ninties did. HILLARY SUPPORTERS CONTRRIBUTE NOW TO HER CAMPAIGN> HILLARY CLINTON 08
Mrs "I deserve to be Prez" will not quit now because then she would have to dig into her own millions again to payoff this fiasco she is running.
With there being very little difference between Hillary and Barack on issues...
Anyone still clinging to her is doing so because of his/her own personal issues... whether it is race, sex, narrowmindedness or ignorance.
ha ha ha... he he he....LMAO!!

Terrible, terrible bias. I hate you more everyday CNN. Another superdel. endorsed Hillary did we get a story on this? Of course not. Did we get a story on Obama's ridiculous spending? Of course not. If Obama has such a huge advantage in PA he should be ahead in the polls. It's great to know how easy it is to buy the white house.
Hillary has set us back , now she needs to get out of the race to save ace.
Here we go again. If you can't keep your own house in order, how in the heck do you think she will successfully run the country. Oh I forgot, she will misspeak or fire someone–she's not responsible. Hilliary can also tap the $109 million dollars her and Bill made to bail her out and destroy the democratic party. Some people just don't know when the writing is on the wall.
