The popular vote debate

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/POLITICS/04/24/campaign.wrap/art.clinton.vote.gi.jpg caption="If Michigan and Florida are counted, Sen. Hillary Clinton is ahead in the popular vote."] (CNN) - Sen. Hillary Clinton is arguing that she is ahead of rival Sen. Barack Obama when it comes to the popular vote.

"I'm very proud that as of today, I have received more votes by the people who have voted than anyone else," Clinton said Wednesday, one day after her decisive win in Pennsylvania.

Not so fast, says Obama's campaign. Clinton's count includes her wins in Michigan and Florida, but the Democratic presidential candidates agreed not to campaign in those states because they violated party rules by scheduling their contests too early.

Obama did (indirectly) appear on the Michigan ballot – remember his people put the word out that if they preferred Obama, vote "uncommitted." This received much publicity at the time and Barack (uncommitted) received a significant vote share. Hillary easily won, however. Barack blocked any chance of having a Michigan and Florida "re-vote" (because he knew he'd again lose both).

Barack promised Florida the votes will count, before the results were out...now he backing away from his promise

He sent his lawyers to Florida and Michigan to make sure a re-vote does not happen

Look up how Obama won senate in Illinois.....you would be shocked!!

this just goes to show how far hillary is willing to bend the truth to get her way. this is what lead us to the war in Iraq. Bush wanted to go to war in iraq and he bent all the evidence as well as he could so that we would get into the war. Whats to stop Hillary from doing the same? I don't trust her at all.

The ONLY way she is ahead in the popular vote is if you don't count ANY of the caucus state (which btw has the most active democratic supporters) and you give obama ZERO votes in Michigan since his name wasn't on the ballot and hers was.

I don't know how dumb she thinks the american public is, but i hope that EVERYONE is able to see through this "lie".

What a pathetic attempt by Hillary. She also brings this up now because she knows that after North Catalonia and Indiana she won't have that argument anymore EVEN if she gave obama 0 votes in Michigan.

HIllary, you even agreed that FL and MI would not be included after they violated party rules. Wow , you really will do anything to win, you honestly feel you have the popular vote even though barack did not campaign in either state, and did not get not one vote in MI because he was not on the ballot. Hillary will be the nominee, she will pull any negative tactic possible so that can do so. Its a shame, hey barack, anything can happen, thats America for you. no wonder reverend wright feels that way. No pun intended.

I'll give Florida to her purely to make her supporters stop talking about it. But Michigan? Come on. Her supporters argue that say we should count these votes because otherwise it wouldn't be democratic, right?

Let me ask you this then: For the sake of democracy, how is it democratic when they only had Clinton's name on the ballot and the only other real choices were "undecided", Kucinich, and Gravel?

I am tired of FL and MI. They know going into it their votes would not count and all the candidates agreed to the DNC ruling. Why is it now a big deal. They knowingly broke the rules. It is called "Justice". Paying for your crimes.

I do feel sorry for the people of FL and MI. They need to properly place the blame where it belongs with the state party officials who established the voting date that broke the DNC rules. It is not the fault of anybody else.

Thank you for posting this CNN.

John Edwards and Barack Obama took their names off the Michigan Ballott by choice, a stupid choice that shows they are not ready to be Commander in Chief. They obviously did not think two steps ahead like Hillary. Now Barack is angry and doesn't want anything to count.

Hillary leads IMO because she stuck with the people of Florida and Michigan even when the DNC did what they did.

We need a President that is for all 50 states and all territories, not 48 states and certain islands.

Has clinton lost her scruples? How in the world can she say, she has the most popular vote? First of all she broke the rule and went to florida and michigan. Second, Obama did not campaign in florida and his name did not appear on the ballot in michigan. Finally, Each time clinton open her mouth she show her stupidity. Come on Clinton you have got to be smarter than this!

Obama has more integrity in his little finger than Clinton will ever have in her entire body.

clinton we know you are desparate, but plezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

How can anyone even consider voting for this proven liar. She and Bill will lie and then tell another lie to explain the last lie. Remember America–WE ARE IN A WAR IN IRAQ BECAUSE OF LIES. She is at it again saying she has more votes because she is counting Michigan and Florida. Please America, don't even give her the slightest indication she can bring her lying mouth back to the White house. We cannot afford it.

I wish she'd shut up already about Michigan and Florida. Seriously, I was going to vote for whoever gets the nomination, but she's making that promise almost impossible to hold. Do you every playing fair Hillary?

CLINTON’S MATH IS STUPIDITY AT ITS FINEST!! IT is Ridiculous how all these Ivy League, college educated, ELITE people, CAN’T COUNT!!!

    1. Including FL and MI is backhanded and unfair to any other Dem candidate. They all agreed to the rules! Had Barak won those states the way Hillary is claiming to have, she would be whining that it wasn’t fair!

    2. EVEN if you add FL only because MI did not have Obama's name on the ballot Hillary STILL LOOSES!

    3. To be fair even if Hillary takes the votes from MI and FL and you give the undecided votes to Obama which is about 20-30% of the votes collected there: HE STILL WINS THE POPULAR VOTE!

WHAT in the world is she babbling about! SIT DOWN! YOU LOSS!

I use to sort of like her but she is OUTLANDISH!

Mrs. Clinton, the only reason anyone listens to these games is because of who you married to!

Clinton is "lucky" to be who she is! Anyone else playing these games would have been laughed out of the race!

Thank you Michigan Voter....no one seems to be getting that message.

She only won because there was no one else on the ballot. Hillary didnt care about you until she figured out that she cannot win without you. She, as always, only has her interests in mind.

btw....Julie in Oakland, CA....Obama is all for revotes if they can be done where no one will be excluded. He is also for seating the delegates if it can be done fairly. What is wrong with that?

Note to Senator Clinton: The superdelegates can add for themself, and they can see how you lie about the real numbers. That is why four new superdelegates have endorsed Obama since PA and only one has endorsed Clinton. This is a pattern and will continue until NC votes.

You had better come up with a more compelling argument grounded in reality if you actually want to convince the superdelgates to overturn the will of the people (measured by pledged delegates, which represent the popular will much better than the popular vote because counting the popular vote disenfranchises caucus state voters).

Why would the people who voted not get their votes counted, of course shes ahead, and she has won all but one major battleground. The Republicans want Obama to win so bad because they know they can't beat Clinton in November. This country can't take another 4 years of the same McCain! Please vote responsibly.

She really isn't lying. after all, the people of Mich. and Fla, did go to the polls and vote. Hillary can't help it if Barack took himself off the ballot in Mich. He was on the ballot in Fla, wasn't he? Why not Mich? If the votes in those two states were valid, who would be on top?

    Hillary 08!!

She is seriously a pathological lier. Now whether you count Florida in the popular vote count might be debatable, but there is no way she can claim that the votes in Michigan... where she was the ONLY DEMOCRAT on the ballot, should count towards her popular vote.

She should get torn to pieces for suggesting something so ridiculous, but instead you go on to mention that Obama is having trouble wrapping up the nomination? How can she seriously say this and get away with it? I guess its only been a few hours so we will see how other networks choose to report this OUTRAGEOUS claim.

As for Florida, her argument that it was a fair election since neither candidate campaigned there doesn't hold up in my opinion. In several of the last large states (OH, TX, PA) Clinton has started off with huge leads and Barack has gone in and campaigned effectively and narrowed the gap. Clinton is a household name with a former president campaigning for her and its no mystery that Barack has to do more to convince people in his direction. So I don't think you can say that the Florida vote should count as is without giving Barack and chance to campaign and make his case, as he almost certainly reduce the deficit.

Here in Michigan, everyone knew how to "vote" for Obama. It was heavily advertised what to do if you wanted to show support for Obama or Edwards, which people did in record numbers. I "voted" for Obama in Michigan by voting uncommitted, but now I would not give him my support with what I know about him now. Bottom line, we all knew who we were voting for and if you did not you should not be allowed to vote in the first place.

She just wants to count the votes that will put her ahead. If you counted the caucus votes then she will be behind. If you also give Obama the votes from Michigan that she did not get, she is also behind. This is typical Clinton spin trying to make reality out of fantasy. If the roles were reversed I am sure she would not be saying Obama was ahead.
