Indiana voter ID law ruled constitutional

WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Supreme Court on Monday backed Indiana's law requiring voters to show photo identification, despite concerns thousands of elderly, poor, and minority voters could be locked out of their right to cast ballots.

The 6-3 vote allows Indiana to require the identification when it holds its statewide primary next month.

At issue is whether state laws designed to stem voter fraud end up disenfranchising large groups of Americans who might lack proper documents to prove they are eligible to vote.

The justices wrestled with a balancing test of sorts to ensure both state and individual voter interests were addressed, in what has become a highly partisan legal and political fight.

The federal government issues free photo IDs. What's the problem?

If your going to make the law to show an ID to cast a ballot, make it the law to have a state issued ID in the first place.

    This is disenfranchising thousands.

Both Clinton and Obama should be outraged by this ruling, and discredit the vote.

Lord help us all when Hoosiers have this much say in a national election.

Requiring a photo ID to vote is only common sense. I don't understand why this has not been a requirement all along! Any legal citizen of this country who is old enough to vote will have a photo ID.

That's okay. Obama has enough money to hand out at the Id places for his supporters to get their Id. That's exactly what he should do.

If poor and old people are the ones left out, then this will help Obama, since they overwhelmingly prefer Clinton. On the other hand, it seems appropriate that you should have some kind of legitimate ID to get to vote. So, it's a shame, but it is what it is.

If you dont' have identification, then you can't vote. It's common sense, and if you dont' have it, tough luck... you weren't smart enough to vote anyway.

Any law that reduces the chances of full voter participation is wrong.

Should be Id's required everywhere. But they better do something to get the people that do not have them immediate access to getting a needed document. 8 days before the primary is awfully short period of time when they never had to do this before.

Finally, some substance in the voting laws. Show I.D. or you can't vote. Should be done nationally to cut down on voter fraud and illigals voting.

Common sense prevails. No more illegals voting for the Democrats in the Southwest. Next step, require voters to speak and write English
before they can register to vote. Voter fraud has been rampant in
    Texas and Arizona.

This sucks! They are requiring voter IDs!?!?!? How can Obama cheat....err, win now? They can still strong arm voters at the polls though! Yes, as a black man voting in my primary I was confronted by 4 Obama supporters who berated and insulted me spewing hatred when I told them I was not voting for their candidate. It was then I truly learned what Obama's campaign stands for.

The Clintons and the Republicans (isn't that the same thing, though?) will do anything to disenfranchise as many regular people as possible.

    Sane people support Obama.
