Clinton: I'm not listening to economists on gas tax holiday

Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.

Clinton continues to push for a gas tax holiday.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (CNN) - In the face of criticism from a slate of economists who say her gas tax holiday plan would be ineffective or even harmful, Hillary Clinton said she wasn’t taking stock of their opinions and emphasized that this was a short-term fix that would primarily benefit long-distance drivers.

“I’m not going to put my lot in with economists,” Clinton told George Stephanopolous on ABC’s ‘This Week’ after he asked her to name a single economist supporting her plan. “If we actually did it right, if we had a president who used all the tools of the presidency, we would design it in such a way that it would be implemented effectively.”

Clinton said she didn’t understand the resistance her plan is getting since its intention is to provide relief.

“On so many of these issues where costs have gone up, where people are really feeling squeezed, there just doesn’t seem to be an understanding about what people go through,” Clinton told Stephanopolous.

The debate over Clinton and McCain’s different pieces of legislation to remove the gas tax this summer reached a fever pitch this week with Barack Obama leading the charge to reject it, saying Saturday, “This is what passes for leadership in Washington – phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems.”

“It’s a misnomer to say this is all that I’m doing,” Clinton defended herself, “I have a comprehensive long-term energy plan that would go right at dependence on foreign oil.”

Clinton has been arguing that it’s not only about the money saved but the message it sends. “I really believe we’ve got to start right now, demonstrating a willingness to take on these oil companies,” she argued to Stephanopolous.

Hillary that is good but can you deliver? If not then shut up. I don't want a low price gas tax for the summer and then pay more for it during the winter. If you can garantee that the price want double then go for it, if not stop giving me false hopes.

Maybe elitists like Barack Obama don't need a savings of over $30, but some people could use that when they're losing their house and job

Oh sure Hillary. That's right. Don't listen to the economists. Maybe if you ever make it to President, you won't listen to them then either and then we'll be in the same mess we are now. That's really smart. Don't listen to the economists. JEESH. Real smart!!!!

Yeah... dismiss people who have spent their lives studying the economy.. sounds like that anti-intelectual strain of the Bush years is seaping into the Clinton campaign.

Does this type of ploy actually fool people? I need gas relief as much as the next guy, but not at the expense of 300000 jobs and deteriorating roads.. not so the gas stations can raise prices and take the biggest cut of the tax suspension..

Ending the pandering and the band aide policy fixes is the only way we are going to get this nation back strong for the long term.

    Sen. Obama:

Please help us here in New York State!!

Hillary Clinton didn't deliver on her election
    campaign promises to us!!

She promised Buffalo NY 200,000 jobs if we
elected her - but we've netted a loss of
(30,000) jobs and another major plant
(American Axle – Tonawanda,NY) just this weekend
    announced it is closing!!!

We can't afford her as our US Senator anymore – and
surely not 4 years as our President!!!

Thank you for telling the truth on the gas tax – We
need you to help turn our economy around. We promise
to do our part if you do yours!! Yes we can.

"I’m not going to put my lot in with economists"

Is this Bush-lite where anyone who disagrees with her is out of a job?
Choose the "experts" who support her and toss the others?

  14. Realistic

Nah, don't let anybody who knows anything dictate our national policy. Instead, let's take advice from bowlers and duck hunters.

Just like Bush - Ignore the opinions of those who know the most about something.

Her oil company lobby supporters will love her gas tax holiday, since they can simply raise their prices to make up the difference.

    Exxon/Mobil for Hillary 08!

  15. Interesting

Economists (elitists) = Obama, Hoover & Stevenson

    American Voters = Clinton

I want a break. $30 to $70 would help save money in my pocket and also allow these grocceries to go down in price. It makes sense to an average voter.

I am a CPA and attorney. Why in the world am I worried about Bloomberg and other economists who state it won't work. They also stated that we are not in a Recession. Bush can bail out Bear Stearns, but can't give the American voters a break.

I'll take a Clinton over Obama any day.

  16. Clinton's Never stop Lying

Clinton's will always lie to attempt to get elected. They always have and this is nothing different. She won't tell the truth about lost jobs and lost money for infrastructure spending. How many pennies is this gas holiday going to give all those who lose their job and end up on a permanent holiday from employment, HRC? You run your campaign in the red and now, just for a few votes, you want to run this country into the red. It boggles the mind that people vote for this garbage and then wonder why they lose their jobs. Get educated on this issue and others people and stop voting for such a train wreck with HRC!

  17. No More Pandering

She has no substance to back up her pushing of this gas-tax holiday, because it's all pandering. She thought it would make her sound sympathetic and proactive. But pandering is never good policy.

Whenever there is a crisis such as the current price of fuel in this country, we need both short term and long term relief. Sen. Clinton is the only candidate who recognizes this basic fact and offers both. She is clearly more in touch with most of us, but Sen. Obama is naturally going to attack her efforts. Without an immediate plan of his own, what else can he do?

She is not listening, she is pandering. Everyone knows nothing will be done to help bring down the gas prices down this summer. George Bush is still the president. She can talk and tell lies all she wants. Its the same say anything to win Hillary.

  21. Woman who would NEVER vote for Hillary

Isn't this a perfect example of HRC's stance on any issue. To heck with the experts..........I'll do what "I" think is best. So what if in the long run it is going to COST Americans jobs and more money down the road........I'm going to do what "I" want and you had better agree with me.

Isn't this the same attitude she had when voting FOR the war in Iraq. She couldn't be bothered by the facts and what the experts were saying, she did what "SHE" thought was the best thing to do.

Facts.......we don't need no stinking facts.

Pandering, pandering. She tried to slip one by us. They think they can pull the wool over our eyes, so we can't see the real truth.

This is only a "temporary" fix. It will not save the millions of people making $7.50 an hour that drive back and forth to work so they can eat and pay their bills & feed their children. She is not thinking of the poor people!!!

Obama has the best foreign relations and can help to get oil prices down if the people of the USA would open their eyes and minds and think about the future result and not just a "band-aid" approach to put on a deep wound so that Hillary can get their votes.

This is just another Hillary tactic to win/get votes and get her into the Whitehouse so that BIll can run the country again. We all know who the real president will be if HIllary is elected.

    For Obama '08 FOR CHANGE!!!!

  24. My way or no way....

Yeah...forget the experts....HRC knows everything. Does that attitude not remind anyone of Bush? HRC or McCain is a continuation of Bush...HRC can lie better then Bush, she has had more practice and McCain actually believes that Bush is a good president. She will not fight for the people once she gets elected, bet she won't be able to handle it, she won't be able to cry or whine and god forbid she does all those personality changes she does. The leaders of other countires are intelligent people...they will run all over her and US.

This is what Hillary would be like, in the White House. Not listening to her advisers, and just doing what she feels is good politics. Just like she did when she voted for the War in Iraq.
