Obama: Cuba policy to be based on 'libertad'

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Sen. Obama attended a Cuban Independence Day event in Miami Friday."]
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama told Florida's Cuban American community Friday that his Cuba policy would be based on "libertad" and freedom for the island nation's people.

"The road to freedom for all Cubans must begin with justice for Cuba's political prisoners, the right of free speech, a free press, freedom of assembly, and it must lead to elections that are free and fair," Obama said. "That is my commitment."

"I won't stand for this injustice; you will not stand for this injustice, and together we will stand up for freedom in Cuba. That will be my commitment as president of the United States of America," the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race said during an address in to a Cuban American group in Miami, Florida.

Obama also said the policy for Cuba and the rest of Latin America would be guided by "the simple principle that what's good for the people of the Americas, is good for the United States."

I have read all of the negative comments denouncing Obama's approach to dealing with Cuba. OK... so you don't think the plan for libertad will work. Are people saying that we should continue to ignore Cuba and its people? Its clear that all these years of economic "punishment" has done no good whatsoever. After decades of ignoring Cuba – its time to do something different. There has been NO new approach to how we deal with Cuba in the last 4 or 5 presidential terms, and I don't think McCain would even give a second thought to anything other than the status quo. Whatever Bush did is good enough for him. I don't think that improves our relationship at all. Cuba has a new leader. Is there ANY possibility that a new appproach will work?

Is this country afraid to talk to anyone in front of the world?

It does not necessary mean that we will go begging at the back door of any country. Maybe it just means that our phones are not locked to anyone. I would have our country talk of peace at 4 pm any afternoon tp anyone rather than wait for a call of war at 3:30 am any early morning,

I see the usual ignorance is here again today, the same fear mongers and racist. You all will be so sorry if McBush does win. You think your petty miserable lives are just that now. Just vote Mc Cain if you will. See how your childrens futures will disappear. You think you will continue to drive your Big SUV's and that The GOP gives a D about any of you who are not personally their friends confidants or family members. Then you are sadly mistaken.
How many of you time wasters have Law degrees or attended Yale or Harvard???
Oh right : ZERO. I am so sick of the ignorance posted here daily that in protest I will not read anymore of these blogs. Its not even entertaining anymore. The comments are just down right ignorant.

The same 50 y/o policies have not and will not work. Something different needs to be tried.

Obama and Hillary's policies are 98% identical it is outright stupidity for a Hillary supporter to vote for McCain out of spite.

I've lost a cousin and a best friend to an unjust war.

Yes to ANY democrat for Prez.
    No to McCain

The more I think about this here is what I believe:
Hillary is between a rock and a hard place. Her only hope is that the truth about Obama will be recognized before the convention is over. Otherwise she has to wait, let McCain win and run next time.
The Republicans want Obama to get the nomination because he can’t win. They are waiting to pull out the big guns like the M Obama “whitey” video, etc.

To the so-called clinton supporters who keep calling Obama a socialist. You do realize that throughout 2007 every republican on the blogs called her a socialist or worse. Look at the archives if you don't believe me.

Obama says he will meet with leaders of other countries without precondition. This means he wont require any concessions, or offer any concessions, in order to sit down and talk.

But he can and will spell out our vision of democracy at any time.

This seems consistent to me. Where's the discrepancy?

Some people are afraid of change. They hold on to old things, old ways of thinking, old way of doing things. Well, I for one, can't wait for change. Yeah it can be scary to some. Afraid of what the old ones will say or do to stop you from changing. Maybe they think change is not what you need right now. Maybe they think the old ways are ok for now. Maybe we can change later on down the road. So is 50 years long enough for you to wait for change? Some cubans haven't seen their relatives in 50 years. We can't wait any longer. The voters who are not afraid get it.

I'm happy to see Obama show solid leadership on this issue. His plan for allowing remittances and free travel is a great first step to opening up talks with Cuba. 50 years of the same policy has clearly produced nothing but tension.

Some people have this irrational hate for Obama without citing anything hard facts or real disagreements. They focus on smears and fear-mongering. The American people deserve better than that. We deserve a real debate about what really matters and what will actually fix the failed policies of the Bush administration.

So far, Obama is winning that debate because McCain is increasingly looking like a mouth piece for Bush.'s almost like he's been brainwashed by Bush. How who is the Manchurian candidate?

  25. 28, AFRO-AMERICAN Clinton supporter!

I can answer you "No Resume"! Obama gets crowds rowled up!... they have no idea what they just experienced! He is taking this bruised nation and leading it over the cliff! I AM a democrat, but I feel like he leans soooooo far left that he will not get to crossover votes. Yeah, he has the young, not so wise, but "educated" vote... why?... because he went to Harvard and was on that law review... he wasn't a professor there... just a visiting lecturer. Somehow, there IS an elitist attitude he has, along with his voters.

By the way, he constantly took cheap shots a Clinton, but everyone, including the MEDIA saw her has negative... Wait until the republicans get to his butt!!!!
