Bill Clinton says wife is victim of a ‘cover up’

Watch Bill Clinton's remarks about the state of the race.

(CNN) - Former President Bill Clinton said that Democrats were more likely to lose in November if his wife Hillary Clinton is not the party’s presidential nominee, and suggested some people were trying to “cover this up” and “push and pressure and bully” superdelegates to make up their minds prematurely.

"I can’t believe it. It is just frantic the way they are trying to push and pressure and bully all these superdelegates to come out,” he said at a South Dakota campaign stop Sunday, in remarks first reported by ABC News. “'Oh, this is so terrible: The people they want her. Oh, this is so terrible: She is winning the general election, and he is not. Oh my goodness, we have to cover this up.'"

The former president added that his wife had not been given the respect she deserved as a legitimate presidential candidate. "She is winning the general election today and he is not, according to all the evidence,” he said. “And I have never seen anything like it. I have never seen a candidate treated so disrespectfully just for running.”

“Her only position was, ‘Look, if I lose I'll be a good team player. We will all try to win - but let's let everybody vote, and count every vote,’" he said.

The former president suggested that if the New York senator ended the primary season with an edge in the popular vote, it would be a significant development. "If you vote for her and she does well in Montana and she does well in Puerto Rico, when this is over she will be ahead in the popular vote,” said Clinton.

“And they're trying to get her to cry uncle before the Democratic Party has to decide what to do in Florida and Michigan” – which the party would need to do “unless we want to lose the election. "

The current requirement to claim the Democratic presidential nomination is 2,026 delegates, a formula that does not take into account delegates from Florida and Michigan, whose contests were not sanctioned by the party – although if those votes were to be counted as cast, Hillary Clinton would still currently trail rival Barack Obama in the overall delegate count.

The former president said Sunday that the media had unfairly attacked his wife since the Iowa caucuses, repeating an often-used charge that press coverage had made him feel as though he were living in a “fun house.”

"If you notice, there hasn't been a lot of publicity on these polls I just told you about,” he said. “It is the first time you've heard it? Why do you think that is? Why do you think? Don't you think if the polls were the reverse and he was winning the Electoral College against Senator McCain and Hillary was losing it, it would be blasted on every television station?”

He added, “You would know it wouldn't you? It wouldn't be a little secret. And there is another Electoral College poll that I saw yesterday had her over 300 electoral votes…. She will win the general election if you nominate her. They're just trying to make sure you don't."

The Clintons Meltdown! I love it!

What a disgrace – him and his sorry wife!

    Hey Bill ---– no whining!

So now we have jumped from the primary to the general election and Hillary is going to beat Mc Cain? But yet – she hasn't and couldn't beat Obama in the primary!

Yeah – Bill is living in a fun house! Him and Hillary are getting funny by the day! What a show!

Who are "they" and "those people". Bill your trying too hard to make her look like a fighter. I understand why. The only problem is that Obama and his team are aware of this so you really have no opposition. Old politics is slowly dying in front of our eyes.

Bill, will you please take Hillary and go home? Do you realize that if she steals this nomination and Bush stole the election in 2000, you will have to tell us where you money comes from? Like how many millions from Iran? That the 10 mil. that you and Hillary donated to charity was to YOUR library? You two remind me of a spoiled brat that loses the ball game, but that you want mommy to make them let you hit a few more times? If this country elects John McCain, they deserve just as they get, the problem is, we all will suffer. And America, please ask for the paper ballot!!!! All of the machines are taken to the RNC to be validated! Go home Bill, please.

My, what a victim our poor Hillary is, huh, Bill? Just what I want, an eternal victim as president. Ah, what a winning strategy! Whine your way into office!

    Oh, boo hoo hoo.

The only thing many of us Democrats out here are pushing the supers for now is to simply end this thing so Bill and Hillary will go away. Clinton(s) already lost, fair and square. It was so months ago, it will still be so months from now. Why prolong this and give them a platform to spout this endless stream of nonsense?

For God's sake, suck it up and move on.

Looks like it is time for Hillary to get out of the kitchen, I am sure she will now have time to write another book. Now Hillary & Bill can tour the world together giving talks on how to become a millionaire,
    Leave politics to Obama.

By definition, if she was the best candidate shouldn't she be winning by the rules???

Clearly she is not the best because she is broke, behind in delegates (which are what counts) and lost by almost every metric except New Clintonian Math.

This is not sexism, its not a con-spiracy, its called losing and you need to learn to do it gracefully. They use polls about the electoral college, but then reject the delegate math and use popular vote for the primaries... ITS INSANE!!!

The system is delegates and electoral college, you can't pick and choose when you use one or the other. This is not a 3rd world country or Russia when we just appoint her president because she tells us she is best.... she needs to win the actual election.

All this does is further polarize the Democrats.

I keep telling my American Democrat friends that they will have problems reuniting for the fall election. The Clintons' determination to fight to the very end will, unfortunately, create a hugh rift in the party that I firmly believe cannot be healed to win the Presidency.

The Clinton faithful are too emotionally caught up in the Democrat primaries to objectively see what is in their best interests.

AND PLEASE NOTE: The reuniting of the Democrat party after the primaries IS MORE DEPENDENT UPON HILLARY THAN BARACK. If she does not work very hard, I stress VERY HARD, to bring her followers over to Obama, the Democrat party will not reunite properly.

Isn't it ironic that the loser of the Democrat primaries ultimately controls whether the party wins the Presidency in the fall!!!!

I am totally disgusted with the antics of the Clintons. And as the primary process continues to near to its end, they are becoming more vicious and desperate. Do we really want 4 years of a Clinton co-presidency? Most unfortunately, they are apparently convincing some voters to stick by them. Please, please voters-- Pay attention! After listening to Bill and Hillary, please checks the facts! I want to be proud of our next president! Obama for President!!!!!

It is so sickning to think some people will not vote or vote for McCain if Obama wins the nomination. Can't they see what the last 4 years have been like, and they want more of the same? That is just plain stupid!!

Bill Clinton has become such a joke. "Did you know there's polls where she beats McCain?" without mentioning that in most of those, so does Obama (and there are plenty of polls which show Obama winning but not Hillary). Intellectual dishonesty has a new (old?) champion, and his name, not surprisingly, is Clinton.

I am SO sick of Bill making like his wife is being victimized. Are we supposed to treat her the same as other candidates, or are we supposed to give her preferential treatment? Rules are rules! As the saying goes, if she can't stand the heat, she should get out of the kitchen!

    Now it's a"cover-up"???
How can they live with themselves?
How can they sleep at night KNOWING exactly what they're personal antics are doing to the democratic party.....all so for the sake of winning??!!
I can't stand it. WHAT country would want these 2 people in charge?
    It's beyond crazy now.

It seems like Bill is trying to cash in all those IOU's from him not being able to keep it in his pants a couple years ago. Now we have to listen to him grovel and squirm trying to get her in office. Disgraceful. There is no conspiracy. I guess it depends on what your definition of "no" is though?

Is just that the Clintons' ego has become so large that they cannot accept the truth? The youth vote wants Obama. The educated want Obama. Minorities want Obama. The majority wants Obama.

What is there to cover-up? The fact that Hillary can't seem to be able to tell the truth? Or is it that she can't seem to be able to count properly?

    Go away Bill.

Paranoid much, Bill? Who is covering what up? How about you behind the scens telling Suer Delegates to hold off on their choices, or when that did not work, trying to bully them into making them ame her the V.P. nominee! You people are just plain nuts!

How come Hillary Clinton wasn't one bit interested in Florida and Michigan being counted until after Super Tuesday when she realized she wasn't going to be nominated then ??

Then, all of a sudden she made a 360 degree turn around ....

I think its time Hillary... Go out with some grace and respect ....
