McCain admits mistake in using Petraeus picture for fundraising

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/05/30/art.mccain.email.gi.jpg caption=" A fundraising e-mail sent to McCain supporters Thursday."]

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) - John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for president, said he was wrong to use an image of Gen. David Petraeus in fundraising material, and it "will not happen again."

His admission came hours after the Barack Obama campaign criticized an e-mail showing McCain shaking hands with the general who has been commanding U.S forces in Iraq.

It was not the first time McCain had used the picture of himself with Petraeus; it appeared on the candidate's website for several days in April before being taken down.

McCain has been hammering Obama for days over the length of time been since the Democratic front-runner last visited Iraq, mentioning Friday it was "873 days."

"I have visited Iraq on many occasions because I think the most vital decision that any president of the United States can make has got to be about the security of this nation and the lives of the young Americans who are serving," McCain said in an e-mail to supporters sent Thursday afternoon.

Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently took the unusual step of admonishing all members of the military to stay out of politics as the presidential campaign heats up.

McCain goes to Iraq for "show purposes" only.

". . . has got to be about the security of this nation and then the young Americans". Priorities are backwards!! Always the young Americans first, not the "fairytale" on what McCain thinks security of this nation should be based upon.

McCain is old enough to know better by now that there are other ways to go about on deciding how a bad situation can be delt with, without turning to War, which in this case, made a bad situation worse.

This is really the only thing McCain knows is War and is the only thing he's talks about. Bad man..reminds me of his twin.

McCain is just pathetic. The man claims to be an advocate for veteran rights and benefits but then again every time he's had the chance to change the lives of veterans through several proposed bills with his vote he hasn't. The guy is another Bush. I got one think to say to you McCain it's one thing to talk the talk and a complete different thing to walk to the talk. Yes, you were a POW thank you for your service, I've served too. But everyone knows that people change and you might have at one point been for veterans, your actions recently show the opposite. What Greed does to America is so upsetting. I was once a republican but thank God not any more.

Gee, for a guy with so much experience and such wisdom and intellect. He sure does make a lot of mistakes....Authorizing war, comment about Iran training al quada, comment about freely walking around iraq w/o a vest, Hagee, the other pastor, economy, gas tax. et al..

A 'straight talker' would not have done this in the first place.
A 'Straight talker' would not flip flop on taxation for the rich, and other flip flops.
A 'Straight talker' would not be caught on camera, for the whole Utube world to view, calling radical preachers 'great American leaders' 'spiritual guides' and someone who 'should do the speaking' for his campaign.
A 'straight talker' would not back down from a debate with Obama by running to hide behind Bush and offering a rose colored, 'guided' tour of Iraq. If Obama let's you rope a dope him into your one dance campaign platform, then he will be showing lack of thinking.
(Political leaders should send agents into a war on 'fact finding' and not subject the troops to the distraction of a spit and polish clean up, with an increased security detail, so they don't learn anything. Send trusted aids who can blend in and research the situation in a 'straight talking' manner!)

    CNN please post...

I said I won't write again. Well, I am back. After doing some research, I hope Hillary takes this as far as she can. When she finally loses, I hope the rest of you loser write her name in the ballot. The more votes you fools give Hillary the easier you make it for McCain to win. The longer this goes the better it gets for the Democrats to lose the majority they won in the house and senate. I am calling it today May 30th at 3:58 PM CST, There will be another Republican President in January, this time with a Republican majority in congress. We will owe that to Hillary and her childish supporter and Barak and his childish supporter. So keep playing the name calling game and take the fight for your candidate to the streets. Maybe and nice Clinton lead Riot will help your case. Thanks you again for handing the control of the country back to the Republicans.

My friends, as soon as I learn that Iran is Shia and Al-Qaeda is Sunni, I""ll bring victory to Iraq.
My friends, as soon as I learn that we aren"t down to pre-surge levels in Iraq, I"ll bring us victory there.
My friends, as soon as I learn that the real leader of Iran is Ali Khameini, I will deal with Iran.
My friends, as soon as I get rid of about 50 more lobbyists, my campaign will be lobbyist free.
My friends, I must change my depends. God Bless America.

Good for him, he can see when he is wrong and can admit to it, I only wish that Obama could learn some things from him. We need a strong leader like McCain that is a straight shooter in the White House.
I believe the Clinton Demo's would be happy to see that we do have hope

McCain is too old to do any of this. He needs to go home peacefully with his wife and black child. He's done all he can do for this country. DON'T SCREW IT UP SIR. Go home and let the next generation handle this.

Typical McSame! Do something like this that he knows is inappropriate, get the benefits from it, and then say it will never happen again. What a jerk! This guy and George W. Bush both need to be retired to the pasture before they destroy our nation.

David Petraus is one of the worst commanders in the history of the US-

What Petraus did is arm the Sunnis with our weapons to fight other groups, and pay militant groups to keep peace.

We had an appeaser like this in the past and his name was Charlie Wilson he is the reason why Al Qaida is so strong, and Bid Laden is still alive.

McCain's "photo op visits to Iraq hit a new low!! Reporters like Michael Ware have stated that these visits are protected events that in no way give a politician a true picture of what is really going on in Iraq.

Why doesn't McCain do some live interviews with soldiers who have returned From Iraq..perhaps an open forum??

I must be one of those "whites" who do not understand the "black church" because I would never attend a church where hatred is the main point of discussion. We all know darn well that Barack Obama regularly (by his own admission) service at this church and the last thing this country needs is a president full of hatred.

  22. Same old song

Same old Republican trick. Sen. McCain knew he was not authorized to use the General's picture, but he put it out there anyway. I guess he felt unless I get caught it is okay. Well the damage is done.

I'm sure that he and most of his campaign staff knows that they had to have permission to use anyone picture for showing. If they did not know that, then we are in big trouble. Another Bush Idiot on the Horizon.

Even though I'm a Democrat and won't vote for McCain, this is just another gaffe by a politician. It won't be his last as well as Senator Obama will make gaffes as well. If gaffes are what we are basing our votes on, then no politician would get any votes:-)

Let's get to the issues at hand.

Please, don't make me laugh McCain:
"I have visited Iraq on many occasions because I think the most vital decision that any president of the United States can make has got to be about the security of this nation and the lives of the young Americans who are serving"????

You don't care about any of that.
All that McCain cares is about keeping the PNAC (Project for a New American Century) lunatic world domination project going on...
