McCain admits mistake in using Petraeus picture for fundraising

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" A fundraising e-mail sent to McCain supporters Thursday."]

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) - John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for president, said he was wrong to use an image of Gen. David Petraeus in fundraising material, and it "will not happen again."

His admission came hours after the Barack Obama campaign criticized an e-mail showing McCain shaking hands with the general who has been commanding U.S forces in Iraq.

It was not the first time McCain had used the picture of himself with Petraeus; it appeared on the candidate's website for several days in April before being taken down.

McCain has been hammering Obama for days over the length of time been since the Democratic front-runner last visited Iraq, mentioning Friday it was "873 days."

"I have visited Iraq on many occasions because I think the most vital decision that any president of the United States can make has got to be about the security of this nation and the lives of the young Americans who are serving," McCain said in an e-mail to supporters sent Thursday afternoon.

Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently took the unusual step of admonishing all members of the military to stay out of politics as the presidential campaign heats up.

In the 60's when i was in the Navy "It's time to hat up" was used referring to the time to leave was upon us. Sen. McCain, before former sailors, and others lose respect for you, maybe you want to consider this. America is against this Bush /Cheney war. We want change, and Barack Obama represents this change.

The JSC commander told the armed forces that they could not outwardly campaine for any one while in uniform!
It was wrong for Mcain to do this.
If you are in the service and did this, you would be punish. But I forgot Mcain is not! But would he punish someone if he could? I think he would!

Same ol' same ol'. These tactics are much more indicative of McCain's age than any health issue.

You can't teach what you don't know. McCain has been in the White House for approximately 30 years and doesn't know politics and military can't mix, he's dummer than dirt.

Amazing! It's either military personnel or people of the cloth. Let's just get on with the General Election. And No, Obama does not need to be in Iraq at this moment. He has Iraq right here, between Hillary and co. and Mc cain.

Reminds me of an old man who played football when he was young and pretends he's still in the game when he should be out riding a lawn mower.

Come on CNN where is your fair and balance reporting? You should have been on top of this story earlier or did a democrat say something else that was more news worthy like Obama said sweety to another reporter. JM always apologizes once he gets the desired effect he is looking for.

I cannot believe some of the comments I read about why people are going to vote for McCain over Obama. Are some of the people on these threads just plain prejudice or blind and oblivious to what the GOP has done to this countries economy and standing in the world. Oil was $ 23 a barrel when Bush invaded Iraq and what is it now $130? Gas is averaging $4 a gallon and is affecting everything we buy from food to toilet paper! Go ahead and do the ill-advised thing and elect john McCain President, gas will be soon $10 per gallon after like he stated Bomb Bomb, bomb Bomb Iran! Just another point the largest oil reserves left in the world are in Iran people! Wake up people right now people are losing their homes, going to food banks, can not afford to go to the doctor or buy gas at its current price. What is next before we wise up pictures of thousands of cars and trucks stranded on the highways out of gas? Go ahead vote for McCain!

McCain's been there so many times and he still doesn't know the difference between Sunni & Shiite. His reasoning is fallacious, quantity of time does not equate to experience or knowledge.

Yes, and every month I head over to Yankee Stadium to catch some MLB. I know the game of baseball, but know matter how many times I go to the stadiium. It in no way means I'm qualified to manage the team or acquire the skills to be a MLB player.

You would think someone that wants to be commander in chief and an ex millitary person should know that the armed services is completely off limits when it comes to taking sides dem or repub. This will not be McBush's last mistake. He will make many, many more.

Gen Petraeus will tell the truth to anyone who will listen. Obama does not want to listen and can't stand the fact that McCain will.

McCain IS military. What else does he have to offer? Foreign affairs ?(Bomb, bomb , bomb, bomb. bomb Iran) Forget it!! What has he offered in response to the economy? Norhting. Please, Americans, do not vote for someone who will make our world more unsafe. We need someone to lead our country with understanding, empathy and reason. PLEASE, PLEASE do not elect this person president.

John McCain should know better. Military personnel can't endorse a political candidate. I hope General Petreaus took the opportunity to tell Sen. McCain how over tasked the military is and how our military is now weaker because of a two-front war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Shame on McCain for using our military to make defense contractors more $$$. Our military already won the war and would return home with honor and respect. He should SURRENDER his views and realize that Iraq is now a war of diplomacy.

    Sorry for rambling
