Lieberman attacks Obama over foreign policy

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/04/art.lieb.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman had sharp words for Obama."](CNN) - On the first day of the general election campaign, the very first Republican conference call attacking presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama featured his party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Lieberman.

"Senator Obama argued today that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran," said Lieberman on a conference call for reporters hosted by John McCain's campaign Wednesday. "..If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way. It's not because of what we’ve done in Iraq, it’s because Iran is a fanatical terrorist expansionist state."

On the same call, Republican Rep. Eric Cantor of Ohio said Obama's speech did nothing to dispel doubts about his commitment to Israel.

Both men spoke shortly after Obama addressed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington. The GOP has been hoping that concerns by some in the Jewish community about the Illinois senator's willingness to diplomatically engage Iranian leaders will allow them to make inroads with that crucial Democratic voting bloc.

Lieberman, who endorsed John McCain earlier this year, has been increasingly critical of Obama - particularly his goal to end the war in Iraq. The Democrat-turned-independent has been a strong supporter of President Bush's Middle East and Iraq policies.

Obama endorsed Lieberman in his 2006 Democratic primary battle against challenger Ned Lamont. But after the Connecticut senator lost and decided to run as an independent, Obama switched his support to Lamont, who shared his opposition to the Iraq war.

When you throw stones in a hog pen, whichever one squeals out is the one that got hit!! The fact that you all had to get on a conference call means Obama's stone hit you right in the center....way to go Obama, kill them with it....get on up, stand up, fight back, we're gonna win!!

    Obama '08!

  2. Absolutely NOT

Lieberman finds himself on the outside of a refreshing change for the United States so now he wants to oppose it.

The time for Washington insiders to control everything in the name of their special interests is over. Lieberman is paid off by the Israelis and is pushing their agenda.

It's time for the USA to act in our own interests. Help for Israel is one thing. Bending over backwards and shipping them boatloads of American dollars is another.

Wow what happened to this guy Lieberman? Bitter due to the fact that he lost to a democrat and had to win his seat as an independent? Sad affairs. The 2004 Democrat VP nominee has lost his marbles along with McBush.

Lieberman was the Democratic VP candidate in 2000 with Al Gore. Check your facts before writing a story. In 2004 it was Kerry and Edwards. For the record he is officially is an Independent getting elected in the election as such after losing the primary since his state is not one like many that has a sore loser law (you can't run in the fall as an independent if you lose your party's primary). He has clearly drunk the Neo Con Koolaid.

Check it out....Nobama has been waffling on decisions for years.

I was for Joe Lieberman before I was against him – The No Resume President.

Some of us more reaearch driven voters did our homework..Trinity is NOT a hate-filled church, but more importantly, i find myself proud that I CAN SIT MY 12 YEAR OLD AND 6 YEAR OLD DOWN IN FRONT OF HIM AND HAVE THEM FILLED WITH HOPE!!!!

cnn.. please post.. i am bursting with joy and need an outlet..thank you.

It's going to be exciting to see Obama verbally own McShame and Lieberman in debates.

I hope Obama accepts McCain's challenge for town hall meetings.

    Lieberman is McCain's puppet.

I really can't stand Liberman but he sure called that right. I hate to admit that I agree with him but being a veteran of twenty years he is dead on.

    Hey Joe.

Iran is stronger because somebody's been sleeping at the switch, so that makes Iranian backed groups like Hezbollah stronger. If you think having some dialog with Iran is bad, then may be you do not understand the enemy.

Bin Laden is till on the loose because Bush pulled troops out of Tora Bora to go attack Iran. Remember that battle in mountain caves, where Bin Laden was holed up until Bush opened the net.

Wake up Joe. The current strategy is not working as well as advertised.

No one cares what you think Lieberman. You're irrelevant.

sure would be nice to pick up about 12 senate seats so Joe can feel free to declare himself the mindless right wing nut job he really is.

    Just one man's opinion.

What part of "I will never comprmise when it comes to the safety of Israel," doesn't dispel rumors about his committment to out strongest Middle Eastern ally. Come on now GOP! I thought we were stopping these scare tactics. The bottom line is, America will always be joined at the hip to Israel. Obama doesn't stand a chance if he tries anything to the contrarty (not that he would) once he gets the Presidency.

Glad that Joe Lieberman in there to help McCain along – his campaign for the VP nomination is almost as overt as that of Hillary. At least Lieberman has some gravitas.

Joe, the Democrat, should stay in Connecticut, where he is so much loved by Republicans. If he is such an expert on foreign affairs, why is he still backing that costly and dumb war in iraq?

That is rich coming from a man who has turned his back on his values and ethics more times in public service than any other I can remember.

He is absolute trash!!!!! and when his time comes he will be voted out of office and hopefully fade into the sunset.

Liebermann is a true Democrat, like the ones our parents knew, before they turned into a bunch of communists.

You know Reps, do you know why I support him??? Is because the world is looking at us differently. I remember I said that I thought we were the laughing stock of the world but even people of all races(except Middle East) can understand what's going on.......

    Now that I respect......
