Lieberman attacks Obama over foreign policy

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/04/art.lieb.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman had sharp words for Obama."](CNN) - On the first day of the general election campaign, the very first Republican conference call attacking presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama featured his party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Lieberman.

"Senator Obama argued today that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran," said Lieberman on a conference call for reporters hosted by John McCain's campaign Wednesday. "..If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way. It's not because of what we’ve done in Iraq, it’s because Iran is a fanatical terrorist expansionist state."

On the same call, Republican Rep. Eric Cantor of Ohio said Obama's speech did nothing to dispel doubts about his commitment to Israel.

Both men spoke shortly after Obama addressed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington. The GOP has been hoping that concerns by some in the Jewish community about the Illinois senator's willingness to diplomatically engage Iranian leaders will allow them to make inroads with that crucial Democratic voting bloc.

Lieberman, who endorsed John McCain earlier this year, has been increasingly critical of Obama - particularly his goal to end the war in Iraq. The Democrat-turned-independent has been a strong supporter of President Bush's Middle East and Iraq policies.

Obama endorsed Lieberman in his 2006 Democratic primary battle against challenger Ned Lamont. But after the Connecticut senator lost and decided to run as an independent, Obama switched his support to Lamont, who shared his opposition to the Iraq war.

Hi Benedict Ar- I mean Joe. Have you actually met the denizens of Iran before you basically called the whole country a pot of fanatics? You realize their idiot Prez isn't even popular w/ them? Most of them rather worry about how to afford groceries, or how to fix their infrastructure.

Joe, if we don't talk to anyone in Iran, then how do you expect the situation to improve? What's your solution to the dilenma?

And yes, America has even talked to it's 'enemies' in the past; you could ask Nixon or FDR about that if they were still alive. Do what's right for the situation at hand, not because it's something that may or may not have worked in the past.

Go home, Joe. Spend some more time educating McCain on the basics of Arab ethic groups so you won't have to keep accompanying him on his trips and whispering corrections in his ear!!

Seven trips to Iraq and McCain still doesn't know the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite. Wonderful!! THAT'S EXPERIENCE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN !! WOW.

This guy is a sell-out to the party he supposedly represents, but more importantly to the American people.

Lieberman's head is so far up McCains xo#, he can't see straight. He was one that originally thought this war was good idea along with McCain. It is just a bunch of older generation politicians working the same ole politics. The world of politics has changed time for new.

we are Americans, America and Isreal are different countries with different interest. Our Interest in America is to protect our country. Not to fight for another countries problem. Isreal is stronger than Iran, Iraqi all the middle eastern countries. So why would our soliders die for a war thats not ours. Why America............Isreal needs to deal with its own problem.

Lieberman sickens me. I just wrote to Nancy Pelosi asking her to prevent him from caucusing with the Democrats if she can. I hope he gets unseated, I swear. He's out of control.

Furthermore, in reference to the other guy's remarks– last time I checked the candidate's commitment was supposed to be... USA first, alliances second?

Joe, you need to move to Israel and serve in their Military, since
you avoided Military service in the 60's here in the USA.

Please. No one cares what you are saying. Stop trying to involve your big nose in the business of important people. Don't think I haven't noticed you butlering around McCrap in the background of every news/photo op. All you are doing is holding his umbrella while he craps on the nation.

    Go away traitor!

Politics as ususal. The old fear change. Instead...they should be proud because it is only through their mistakes that the path becomes obvious. Thanks for showing us the way. Whatever Joe says...take the opposite path and you will be better off. Simple isn't it?

Correction to the article: Lieberman was not on the 2004 Democratic ticket, he was Gore's running mate in 2000. It was Kerry/Edwards in 2004.
