Lieberman attacks Obama over foreign policy

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/04/art.lieb.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman had sharp words for Obama."](CNN) - On the first day of the general election campaign, the very first Republican conference call attacking presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama featured his party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, Sen. Joe Lieberman.

"Senator Obama argued today that American foreign policy in recent years has essentially sort of strengthened Iran," said Lieberman on a conference call for reporters hosted by John McCain's campaign Wednesday. "..If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way. It's not because of what we’ve done in Iraq, it’s because Iran is a fanatical terrorist expansionist state."

On the same call, Republican Rep. Eric Cantor of Ohio said Obama's speech did nothing to dispel doubts about his commitment to Israel.

Both men spoke shortly after Obama addressed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington. The GOP has been hoping that concerns by some in the Jewish community about the Illinois senator's willingness to diplomatically engage Iranian leaders will allow them to make inroads with that crucial Democratic voting bloc.

Lieberman, who endorsed John McCain earlier this year, has been increasingly critical of Obama - particularly his goal to end the war in Iraq. The Democrat-turned-independent has been a strong supporter of President Bush's Middle East and Iraq policies.

Obama endorsed Lieberman in his 2006 Democratic primary battle against challenger Ned Lamont. But after the Connecticut senator lost and decided to run as an independent, Obama switched his support to Lamont, who shared his opposition to the Iraq war.

Lieberman is a joke. He will be lucky to be a Senator again after his alignment with Mc-Q-Tip

A journalist with access to Senator Lieberman needs to ask him directly: if the choice was between protecting an American city under imminent attack or protecting Tel Aviv under imminent attack, would he hesitate in his decision making?

The 'President' is a Christian, and he's aware of what The Bible says that one must seek the peace of Jerusalem if one wants to prosper; why are you guys doubting President Obama?
Is it old age that is at work; when you are too old and refuse to go with the tide, you start to behave and talk like children.

Hillary is rehearsing for her VP role.

I anticipate she will be able to take a Republican punch. But she has to show us she can hit McCain/Lieberman harder.

C'mon Hillary! Jump in anytime you feel like chiming in.

Barrack Obama needs to STOP going on about the failed policies of this administration. The US hasnt built Iran up they have done it themselves and they have ALWAYS, and always will have, these feelings about Israel. Thank god they havent had free reign to do their job of wiping israel off the map, if its because of our policies then thank god. I think Condi has done a great job of dealing with the Middle East. Obama is just dividing gaps even further. he has his own fan base and now he needs to woo the others, and this doesnt do it.

Obama will say anything that he thinks the people he's speaking to want to hear. why cant people see through this. Obama will be a weak choice to have in office should we be attacked again. He will do anything to avoid conflict which means terrorist groups will build themselves up (as they did with Bill Clinton!) knowing that the weakest link is running the US so we are fine to go as we please.

Mr. Lieberman, as a Jew I was amazingly proud of you, I was hoping you would be the first Jewish VP in the history of the United States of America. But now you've allowed your hatred to consume you.

You used to be a mensch, what happened to you?

Bah, Lieberman's still too busy whispering corrections into McCain's ears to know what's really going on anyway.

Nice try Mr. Lieberman. Obama has never made the claim that American foreign policy has made Israel less safe. He makes the claim that it has made America less safe. It is true, whether you wish to acknowledge it or not, that Iran has more influence in the region than it did prior to the Iraq war. Iran's relationship with Israel has not changed, but its influence over other states in the region surely has.

Mr. Lieberman you are a disgrace to all men and women. One must start questioning to which country you owe your allegiance to.

Lieberman is McCains foreign policy dog. Where did this Sen Cantor come from all of a sudden. Obama's speech in front of AIPAC today, cut to the bone. In comparison, McCains speech was a superficial scratch. Neither McCain nor Clinton have the savvy to put together the words heard this morning and Lieberman knows it so he had to attack. Many people do that when they are wrong, especially when they know it. And why is he defending Bush's FAILED policies.

How any thinking person can argue that our foreign policy over the past several years has not been counterproductive is beyond me. Everything that Obama said in his speech this morning rings true.

Joe Leiberman and Hillary Clinton have always been Republicans. They have pretended to be Democrats, because it was a way for them to gain political power. Gore screwed up by selecting Leiberman to be his running mate; and Obama will be screwing up if he picks Hillary Clinton to be his running mate.
