Lieberman launches grassroots organization

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/04/art.lieb.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman launched a grassroots organization Thursday to appeal to Clinton's supporters."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman – who has taken on increasingly high-profile campaign roles on behalf of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain – announced Thursday that he was launching and heading a new grassroots organization, "Citizens for McCain," making a direct appeal to Hillary Clinton’s disappointed supporters.

“The phones at the campaign headquarters have been ringing with disaffected Democrats calling to say they believe Senator McCain has the experience, judgment, and bipartisanship necessary to lead our country in these difficult times,” Lieberman wrote in a message sent to the Arizona senator’s supporters. “Many of these supporters are former supporters of Senator Clinton.”

Over the past few weeks, some supporters of Hillary Clinton – whose campaign announced Wednesday that she would be suspending her presidential run this weekend - have said that they would consider voting for McCain if she were not the Democratic nominee.

Lieberman highlighted McCain’s “very good working relationship with Senator Clinton” – which he said would continue in the future – and his comments praising her in a speech at a Louisiana campaign event Wednesday.

"Senator Clinton has earned great respect for her tenacity and courage. The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received,” said McCain. “As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach. I am proud to call her my friend."

He called on supporters to “reach out to Americans who are not currently involved in the campaign.

“Will you help us by recruiting your friends, family, and co-workers who may not consider themselves members of the Republican Party and ask them to join the Citizens for McCain organization?” wrote Lieberman.

“I am confident we will find many Democrats and Independents who, like John McCain and me, put country before political party and will support a leader with a real record of bipartisanship…. Together, we will make history.”

On Wednesday - the first day of the general election campaign – the very first Republican conference call attacking presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama featured Lieberman.

Lieberman has been increasingly critical of Obama. The Democrat-turned-independent has been a strong supporter of President Bush's Middle East and Iraq policies.

Obama endorsed Lieberman in his 2006 Democratic primary battle against challenger Ned Lamont. But after the Connecticut senator lost and decided to run as an independent, Obama switched his support to Lamont, who shared his opposition to the Iraq war.

I just don't get the logic of those of Hillary's female supporters who are switching allegiance to McCain. Apparently policies aren't important and voting for more years of Republican misrule will not further the cause of women in this country that's for sure.
I am a 60 year old white woman, who was totally turned off by Clinton's negativity early on and am energised by the enthusiasm of these new younger voters, independents and even some Republicans for Barack Obama.

He's lying. McCain is going to tell Hillary supporters what they want to hear. Don't think for one second this guy isn't a right wing nut job.

I laugh when people call Hillary ambitious and put her down for it. Obama was cut throat and ran for the goal even though in a speech he said he would not run for president, but I guess after 18 months he thought he was too good for the senate.

This was actually set up by a huge group of Hillary supporters who rushed to McCain's website and asked them to set up a group for Hillary supporters who want to vote against Obama in NOvember. This is great! They listened!

dem switching, there is a MASSIVE difference between you switchers and the obama supporters.

i am not saying this to insult you, but seriosuly you guys are NOT basing that decision on FACTS!!!! and we just dont understand why you wont do a little bit of research to learn the facts.

no one said she was a HORRIBLE person, but she HAS let down every one of us. i know so many people, me included, who LOOKED FORWARD to voting for hillary. we dems LOVED the clintons, but their campaigning got uglier and uglier and more rovian by the day, and since that is the GOP way their campaigning became the same lies and half truths we've been suffering through the past 8 years.

and THAT is why obama came from nowhere to get the nomination. this country and all of us have been beaten down by the bush/cheny cabal, WE dont want it anymore, you switchers apparently havent had enough punishment yet!

Lieberman must reeeeeeeeally want to be Secretary of State under McCain. (Which is not to say he doesn't genuinely believe McCain to be the better pick.)

I can't help but wonder if this wouldn't have happened if not for all the rancor from the Lamont challenge in 2006. I'm not blaming the Dems for trying to take out Lieberman, but he's probably got a little payback in mind here.

Great idea! However, I'm still for Hillary.....Denver! Denver! Denver!

But if that is not possible, there is no way my conscience will let me vote for Obama. He is a snake....and even HIllary as VP on his ticket would not get him my vote. In fact, the only vote I could give Obama is the vote of...... NO CONFIDENCE.

After the shenanigans of the DNC, especially the sleazy Rules Committee a week or so ago, and then the superdelegates handing Obama the nomination on a silver platter (whatever happened to the popular vote?)....well, I doubt I want to be a Democrat any longer anyhow. I am totally disgusted with them.

So count me in on this one, Lieberman! At least McCain is a decent and honorable man with a long and impressive track record, including working across party lines......not to even mention how he loved and served his country to the max.

No Abomination in the White House!

    Go McCain!

    WTF?

Is Lieberman just obsessed with being part of every losing cause he can find? It's actually kind of interesting to see these "progressive" & "liberal" political hacks (AHEM... Hillary AND Bill Clinton, Lieberman, et all...) run like hell when the country actually does start toward a more progressive and liberal tipping point. Apparently, it's OK to be in favor progressive ideals, as long as there isn't a chance they might actually HAPPEN. As soon as people start to actually think about DOING it... look out! OH! That's a fairy tale! We can't do that!

F#!% off, Joe. You just made me proud I didn't vote for Bush OR you in 2000....

Senator Lieberman: You are a disgrace. You have sold out. I now regret my vote in the 2000 election. You are a one issue politician who is willing to sell out our beloved country to another four years of a Bush agenda. You have ignored significant issues, such as the economy and Supreme Court nominations. I will never forget your betrayal.
