(CNN)— Michelle Obama said Wednesday she was “touched” First Lady Laura Bush came to her defense when her patriotism was questioned.

“There’s a reason why people like [the first lady],” Obama said on ABC’s The View. “She doesn’t fuel the fire.”

Earlier this year at a campaign event Michelle Obama said, "For the first time in my adult life, I'm really proud of my country.”

Laura Bush told ABC last week the remarks must have been misinterpreted.

"I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,'" said the first lady, adding that "you have to be very careful in what you say" when you’re campaigning.

"That's one of the things you learn and that's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president, and for being the spouse of the president, and that is everything you say is looked and in many cases misconstrued."

Obama said Wednesday she had sent The First Lady a note that took her “a while” to write, but wouldn’t divulge any details because she didn’t know whether it had been received yet.

I can assure you, people are more worried about gas prices, food prices, cost of health care, and this Iraq mess. Since the Republicans cannot win on the issues, this is there attempt to swift boat us. We will not be fooled this time around.

We need good people like Laura.
There are people who do not like Michelle because she is BLACK.
What she said was nothing to question her patriotism but she was taken out of context. As a black woman, I understand what she went through in life. Before you critize some one PLEASE understand where that person is comming from.

You all want this to be about the poor little black family who made it to the White House. They are just like the rest of us. I do agree they worked hard, however they are very wealthy. So Dems what's the difference between a Repubilcan who does the same or a Democrat who does the same? Get off your "High Horse" and unite. Or better yet, start taking care of yourself and stop depending on the Goverment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GIVE ME A BRAKE!

THE "CHANGE "IN AMERICA WILL BE THAT WE ARE IN THE POSITION TO ACCEPT AN INEXPERIENCED , AGGRESSIVE ,EAGER TO GET PEOPLE AND TEACH THEM HOW TO BE A PRESIDENT AND A FIRST LADY!

BOY, JUST BECAUSE WE WONT THE WORLD TO SAY: SEE AMERICA WENT SOO FAR!!???

MY QUESTION IS: HOW IS GOING TO PAY FOR THAT "EXOTICS"?

What a ripoff of an article!!!!!! It's all over the internet that Michelle was touched by Laura. This was the only place where they bothered to put touch in quotation mark. I honestly thought that Laura groped Michelle from the other headlines.

That would have been much more interesting and believable news.

Obama and his wife or McCain and his wife it doesn't matter- the DEMOCRATS still control the Congress and the House of Representatives!! Idiots are in charge and Gas prices have almost doubles since these fools took office!! The Democrats could make Obama look worse than Carter before 4-8 years are up!! Bush has made mistakes, but the Democrats are the Party that supports the Criminals-Thugs and the Enemies of this Country!!!! I'm sure Michelle Obama is a nice lady and Obama has some good ideas, but the Democrats will never support his good ideas-like parents getting involved with their child's education! The lawyers support the sorry parents and will not allow discipline of any kind!!

Julliet, are you serious? The ladies on The View just finished profusely complimenting her on her poise and style! I think she totally rocks the sleeveless dresses - with arms like that, she deserves to - and I'm glad she's not dressing her kids like little automatons. In fact, I think the photo CNN used for this article is a perfect example of how great they look!

More Proud she says. It must be for political reason's. Otherwise she would NOT be proud to be an AMERICAN.

    The OBAMA'S are NOT true Americans . . . . . period.

I have a long history of voting for the First Lady of my choice instead of the President. I voted for Laura Bush because I didn't see Teresa Ketchup-Kerry in that position. This election has been a challenge for me as I have done my due-diligence on selecting who to vote for. In the primary I voted for Hillary Clinton, even though I had never voted for her as First Lady and wondered what Bill Clinton would do with the First Gentleman role. I am now one of the HRC supporters who have effortlessly and without hesitation moved support to Obama. In 2008 my vote for President and First Lady will be for Barack and Michelle Obama as I look forward with fascination to what they will do in their leadership roles!

How many times will the statement about America, which Michelle made, be repeated? It had no effects on any sane person's mind. She explained what she meant and most intelligent people who are not looking for a reason to attack Sen. Obama, accepted her explaination. Besides, it's not like our country has always done things perfect.

    Leave Michelle alone!!!

Politics make strange bedfellows. It was very gracious of Mrs. Bush. I think Mrs Bush was giving her the benefit of the doubt. I don't blame Mrs. Obama as a black woman for saying what she said. I can't say that I have often been proud of this country either. I just think she should have been smarter as a candidate's wife and should have been more careful about what she said in public. But Obama was never careful about who he hung out with, so I guess the two are a matched set. I'm stuck with them since I;m a true Democrat. I just hope they both learn more over the course of this campaign.

I told Michelle to say those things because it would be good for her husband's campaign. Don't tell anyone because it would just ruin the impressions of all the people and we need them to keep on drooling over the Obamas. Whatever it takes.

What makes you patriotic? How many of us walk around with a flag pin or the words "God Bless America" tattooed on our forehead. In my opinion attacking her is un-patriotic!

Michelle – you go girl. Keep your head up and don't stoop to the poop down below. You're too good for that nonsense.

I saw Michelle O on the View this morning. Very stunning lady. The only negative thing that I have to say is- I'm mad at Barack for finding her first, I sure would be PROUD to have her as my wife!!!! But since that is not to be, I sincerely pray to God for the Obama family and the coming new addition (dog). And without a doubt, HE HAS MY VOTE. Too bad I can't vote 18 million times.

Too bad Michelle really did mean it when she said it was the first time she was proud to be American in her adult life. The founding fathers must be so disappointed with what this country's become with first the Bushs and now the possibly of the Obamas.

    God save our country.

it takes a coward to attack a lady, any lady. this is why the "experience" that clinton said she had as the president's wife was not experience, since she could not sign one piece of paper to make anything legal. if a president's wife was all the wrong things that still is not how you judge a president. check into lincoln's marriage. when asked how he could put up with his wife he said, "a deal is a deal". BOY HAS TIMES CHANGED.
