McCain wants government to set energy example

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/POLITICS/06/24/campaign.wrap/art.mccain.gi.jpg caption="Sen. John McCain is pushing energy efficiency and conservation on the campaign trail."](CNN) - Sen. John McCain on Tuesday told voters that energy efficiency "should begin at home" and proposed that the federal government purchase more environmentally friendly vehicles.

"Every year the federal government buys upwards of 60,000 cars and other vehicles, not including military or law-enforcement vehicles," McCain said.

Watch: McCain unveils his energy plan

"From now on, we're going to make those civilian vehicles flex-fuel capable, plug-in hybrid or cars fueled by clean natural gas. If our great goal is to move American transportation toward lower carbon emissions, then it should start with the federal fleet."

I agree with McCain on this. Federal fleet cars should be the most fuel efficient/alternative fuel that we can find. This is the first thing McCain has said about energy that has made even a lick of sense. I'll still be voting for Obama, but I give credit to McCain on the rare occasion that such credit is due.

These are all good points taken from speeches that Obama has given across the US during the primary. So McCain was listening.

Obama has already met with GM and other American auto manufacturers about these issues. McCain, it's good to see you finally onboard. Better late than never.

Yet McWar is all for drilling! A program that does nothing to make gas prices go down. Think about it in 10 years, when the oil finally hits the market, why would oil companies chose to loose money by adding to the supply???

Because they will not lose money. Adding more oil at lower price means they sell more and still make the same money. The Big Oil knows the market cannot support high prices forever, the only solution is to get more support and drop the price. If you think they don't know that then you really a Dem.

To the "formerly for Hillary now for McCain" group.

You admit that McCain is your second choice and not your first. So you're admitting that you really don't believe in McCain and his policies, now do you?

You flip-floppers should stay together...misery loves company

JR, you missed the point. McCain is getting all his energy "advice" from military folks and spies who are a step away from an oil company's paycheck.

$4.00/ gallon gas will be the good ol' days unless some serious changes happen, and this guy and his folks aren't bringing it. And don't talk about not wanting to tax the oil companies, those greedy folks aren't hurting any more with $4 gas. You and I are.

Saving tax payer money at the federal level by investing in fuel efficient cars? Reducing polution in an effort to protect private property rights? Opening up a state's right to choose to drill its own natural resources? This sounds very conservative to me and I love it.

Meanwhile Barack Hussien Obama is talking about sanctioning 3rd world countries and telling that I can't drive my SUV? Socialism? No, thank you.

The best energy example for the government would be to kick the butt of Oil Lobby from the government. That would include Bush, McBush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld and the whole Oil Mafia.

I would believe these words if it weren't for the simple fact that he wants to drill in protected areas. Sorry, can't say two opp. things McCain.

It doesn't matter how environmentally safe oil drilling is now. There's not enough to make us oil independent. Give a hungry man a piece of bread, he will eat now, but starve later. Teach him to make bread, he'll never be hungry again. This country needs oil rehab.

I think the Brazilians have already started this leadership back in the 70's. Where was our government leadership. They were with the oil companies and still are.

People – we can't rely on our corrupt government to fix anything. We spend billions a day on non-sense. What do you expect when we continue to elect knuckleheads.

This is all just pandering – when it comes down to it you simply have to look at the politics over the last ten years. This country is in an economic and political tailspin. McCain insults his own intelligence by continuing to pimp his lame, spin-oriented ideas in this vain effort to keep his party in the Whitehouse after George Bush's eight year debarkle. It's no wonder the only viable candidate was a corpse. McCain should at least get some humor out of this by selecting Charles Manson as VP.

Anyway before this battery propaganda, the focus was on generating more US oil. Repubs trying to somehow ignore the last 8 years and scapegoat Clinton for not drilling in ANWR. Funny, the last time I filled up there was no shortage of gasoline in the pump. The reality is that the current administration has tanked the US economy to such an extend that we cant afford to compete in the World oil market.

so tax payers will pay for someone to develope a new battery, will it then be part of public domain?
