McAuliffe: Bill Clinton and Obama to talk within 48 hours

(CNN) - Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe assured CNN’s Candy Crowley that former President Bill Clinton and presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama will be discussing Clinton’s role in the campaign within the next two days.

“I believe that in the next 24 to 48 hours they will talk and off we will go,” McAuliffe stated on Sunday’s Late Edition.

Clinton has remained behind the scenes so far during the general election. He was not present at the Democratic event in Unity, New Hampshire on Friday and has only released a one-sentence statement saying that he will do whatever he can to help the Illinois senator win the election.

Many analysts have said that Clinton’s not-so-subtle absence from the campaign is because he is angry and bitter about his wife losing the nomination.

McAuliffe defended the former president, saying that he has been taking time to let his wife finish up her campaign and secure her relationship with Obama.

“She was the candidate, she got 18 million votes, she’s the political leader of the Clinton family now,” McAuliffe said.

Obama asked to talk to President Clinton on Friday and Hillary Clinton told him, “Absolutely,” according to McAuliffe.

Now that President Clinton is back from a five-nation tour during which he attended Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party, McAuliffe predicts that they will be speaking shortly—but stressed that the attention should be on Hillary Clinton and Obama coming together.

    Questions for Obama supporters:

Obama has now come out in favor of allowing handguns in the cities while over 500 people in Chicago have been gunned down this year including many children and innocent people. Is this the Obama you thought you knew????

He's also come out against gay marriage. Is this also the Obama you thought you knew?

GT and BHO are retards!!! Where do you get off thinking that Obama was the racist one? And why do the Obamas need to make nice to the Clintons? Obamas do not owe them jack. I am in favor of Bill Clinton and Hilary Clinton being involved in the cabinet of President Obama, but to blame Obama for any of teh losses Clinton have suffered during the primaries is dumb!!!!!

Bill Clinton for whom I voted twice disgusts me. He has prostituted the Presidency for his own financial gain. We all know that the party promised HRC anything she wanted to stay w/ him when he debased his office.
Bill the years that NY has gone w/o an effective Senator are enough. Please take yourself & your Bush league Evita back to Arkansas.
& to all those MI voters who voted uncommitted to show their opposition to the only candidate who willfully violated the rules we'll make sue your voices are heard.
To Billary, just what you said about Obama, if you think Evita will be on the ticket or reelected to the Senate.

Who wants a man that could not stay on message, even for his wife's campaign? They should all make nice, however, like Gore, Obama should avoid using President Clinton in his campaign. He'll do much better without him. The ex-pres appears to be a bitter man these days. I'm sure he's upset that he will now be remembered for being impeached and being a race baiter. It's sad since Bill did do a few good things while in office.

To say that Bill Clinton should only Campaign if his wife is on the ticket is to imply blackmail against Obama! Both Hillary Clinton and Obama were Candidates for the Democratic Party. They are still with the Democratic Party. And the goal is still to have a Democratic President in the White House. Therefore, in my opinion, Hillary Clinton should put all her energy into ensuring that Obama is elected . And I believe wholeheartedly she is doing just that. If Obama wants to have a conversation with Bill Clinton that's Obama'a and Bill's business and I don't feel bloggers should be suggesting that Bill transcribe a form of blackmail upon Obama to have the opportunity of a conversation with him! Let's be reasonable vs. nonsensical and completely unrealistic. Last time I checked this was the Political Ticker not a reincarnation of Al Capone's Meeting Room!

For all of your kool aid drinking cult obama supporters, while you are bashing the Clintons, please don't forget that Obama has not won the election and will not win the election, because not all of us are fooled by Obama's dirty Chicago Politics, ask Aiice Palmer about the dirty trick obama played on her, he is dishonest, plays dirty politics and he and his wife are two trickery people, Obama produce your original copy of your birth certificate with a SEAL on it, until you produce that birth certificate, you are not a US citizen. For you people who keep knocking the Clinton's, its Obama who is asking for their help. If you read the story, Obama asked Hillary for a meeting with Bill Clinton. Knock off the Clinton bashing. When you can stand and and say that you have contributed as much as Bill and Hillary have to the United States and the world, then you may have a right to complain.

Bill and Hillary are crucial and important to the democratic party. Lets not forget that most of the "negative" stories from this campaign were media generated and exploited. Niether Hillary or Bill, or Obama have talked badly about the other. Get over the rumors and surrogates who spew hate.

This tactic loosely translates into a question or three: How much cash? How many speaking engagements will Obama ask for in return? How much profile is in this for Bill and Hillary?
This is politics, not a picnic. Lets hope Obama can change it a bit when he is elected and rid the system of these parasitic tactics!

    Shame on Bill Clinton!
As someone who received such support himself,
during in-party challenges, and attacks from the
"right wing conspiracy" he should be bigger than this!

He should be out there saying....well sometimes the best person for the job is neither about sexism or racism but rather.....excellence...
Obama got it ...For heavens sake Bill....try to be gracious...
It ain't always gonna be about YOU.

I don't feel right about Bill Clinton. He'd only need one person to ask him who he thought would make the best president, and we'd be off and running to the races. Why is Terry McAuliffe still speaking for him?

He thinks that the Clitons "deserve" to be in the whitehouse because that is there destiny...it must be nice to live in his world! Don't believe everything you think moron bill. Your old lady lost fair and square, she lied just as much as you and Obuma did and she was the lesser man and lost, so take it and smoke that in your pipe...only this time inhale and don't lie about it!

Bill and Hillary need to get off the stage–disappear. Obama does not need them. He won the nomination against them–so he should let them go, or it's old Washington politics as usual. The Clintons are corrupt and will only hurt Obama. A lot of the votes for Obama were votes against the Clintons and votes for changing things in Washington. Embracing the Clintons stinks.

If it's meant for Obama to be President–he will, and without the Clintons.

Last week, the talking heads at MSNBC couldn't start off a program without the tired old, "Where's Bill Clinton and why is he snubbing Obama?" Now, everybody's talking about how threatening the Clintons are and warning Obama to steer clear. Well, wake up everybody and listen to Obama. The two Clintons seem to be his dessert of the week, so I guess people better tip him off about how poisonous the Clinton are!

I hopeObama tells Bill exactly what his role is....be enthusiastically supportive, BUT stay in the background and don't say anything stupid.

Obama owes the Clintons NOTHING. The Clintons will owe Obama for saving their political careers and legacy. This notion that the Clintons did so much for AAs is ridiculous. Bill Clinton would NOT have been elected to two terms WITHOUT the AA vote. The Clintons are smart and know whom owes whom. Without the AA vote, Bill and Hillary are just another husband and wife democratic partnership.

Barack the Vote. President Obama. I'll be there in January to usher you into the White House.

What do you owe the Clintons? Have you paid them what you owe them? The Democratic party is the party of entitlement and the Clintons have $20 million in debt so pay up!

Obama/Hillary.....they look great together; seem to have so much strength and "can do" possibilities....it would certainly be a good step for him to select her as VP running mate. Their strengths complement one another and it would bring all 3l6 mil voters together.

President Clinton will come along when it is appropriate. He is not part of the "conversation" just yet. He, too, is a political pro and will do his job. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that he wants this Democrat in office; but, let's face it, the campaign got pretty personal when attacks were made against his presidency by a candidate of his own party, which was unprecedented. All because the candidate was running against the former president's wife. That did not go down well with me. If I have to resolve that anger and hurt, I am sure he does, too. He will come along and when he does, it will be with gusto and because he has conviction and because he knows it is "simply business" and no longer personal. It is about Hillary and Obama, not Bill Clinton, right now. I think she is great, always have. She makes me feel good and positive and hopeful just by listening to her. She would be a great VP for him; she is accustomed to "second place", to helping men get things accomplished. Contrary to what many people have said about her, she is NOT narcissistic; she knows how to work with men and others to get the job done, which has always been her motivation.
Her humor, which I only learned of during this very long campaign, is a delightful surprise to me and I have followed her accomplishments for many years when I first started Pediatric Nursing. I think it speaks to her genuineness and her authenticity, and, frankly, to her "balanced" thought process and her ability to relate to people.
I will easily vote for him with her on the ticket. I say this not to "blackmail" or threaten or issue ultimatums, but, because I deeply believe she has the talent, the experience, the personality, the motivation to serve the country through service to him as his VP. I cannot think of anyone else who would fit that bill as well as she can. I think, together, they may be unbeatable. I began to see how all this CHANGE I have had to listen to for 18 months just might come about with these 2 people.

I cannot believe there is still hate coming out of the Obama camp. It seems like that is all you represent! I've never seen peace come from hate. He and his supporters will give us change, all right – from Bush's fear tactics to Obama's hate strategy. He asked for the meeting with Bill, and you people are demanding Bill back off. ??????? Why doesn't Obama leave Bill alone? Why doesn't Obama leave Hillary alone? Oh, yeah........because he needs them!!!! Obama, leave Bill and Hillary alone! They have better things to do than campaign for your sorry, lying tail!

This is good news as a south african i have always admired the former president BC and i hope he will do the right thing and help unite the party, i am sure he has learnt a lot from his interaction with our former presiden Nelson Mandela especially on matters of reconciliation and nation bulding. From South Africa we are watching with great interest for many reasons as this election is important to us too. I have been following the american election system for many years now, its such an interesting process to watch how strong media houses can influence the voters/citezens view on a particular candidate. it would be nice to have such strong media houses in africa.
