Why is the main stream press ignoring the rumors that have been rampant for the last year or so, that the Bush administration plans to start a war in Iran just prior to the election.

I understand operations done to determine what Iran is up to but I dont support going to war. It must be done diplomatically. The UN must be involved. Bush or Isreal should not instigate a war. This will not be good for the US or the world. Bush if strikes Iran will not be helping world peace.

Why are the neo-cons determined to start a war in Iran? Don't they realize the consequences of $10 a gallon gasoline? Do they really want to detroy the economy, and if so, what separates their goals from those of bin Laden and the terrorists?

if the war with iran thing is true, then the media should be held accountable for putting our troops (special operations) in danger. It would be no different than giving out the identity of a CIA agent, and remember that the media had a wonderful day lashing out at Bush for that because of their bias. This is Bush last term, why dont people see that?

I read an article this weekend about Israel planning to attack
Iran, U.S. backing Israel and Russia backing Iran.
    World War III!'
How scary. Can we do anything to stop Bush from making
any critical decisions the rest of his term? Cannot believe
that Congress would back anything that would get us deeper
into war. With what resources? We are broke and have no
    additional man power.
    Heaven help us.

War is inevitable with Iran given its refusal to halt its Nuclear Weapons program. It threatens to inflict severe damage/retaliation
to any who would attack their country. It is obvious , they would try to block the flow of oil thru the Strait of Hormuz as a first strep....planting
thousands of mines and sinking large ships, even tankers to block shipping thru that strategis water way. The immediate effect of such actions are obvious.. it will throw the global economies into an
unprecendented turmoil. What then is the best solution to Iran's intransigence? Iran has huge conventional ordnance with missiles
to deliver it. Israel and the U.S. have overwhelming forces to deal with Iran, but will it be decisive in a very short and timely manner to prevent global economic chaos if Iran somehow manages to block
the Straits of Hormuz and the flow of oil? we do not worry about our preparedness to deal with any war. we worry about our enemies capabilities to reduce our resources and the economic consequences of retaliations.

I believe that any war with Iran at this time would be very counterproductive and serve as the beginning and the end of the western occupation of the Middle East. Apart from oil price going up to $ 300 a barrel and $15 dollar for a gas, the world economics would collapse. The United States is already engage in two wars right now in the Middle East and East Asia, and if the Bush administration starts another war, it would most certainly destroy our prestige and ruin any chance of relative peace in that part of the war. For a matter of fact, how are going to pay for a war with Iran and who are we going to send there? I hope NYT and other media outlets seriously question this administration before it leads the U.S on a path of a disaster war. This is troubling, do you think so?

Why go into another mistake like Iraq...thousands killed our own, plus innocent Iraquis, billions spent and counting? This thought is ludicrous, etc...

Everything about this buildup looks just like the buildup before the Iraq War. Is this completely politically motivated (to start a war before the election), or is there any other legitimate reasons for the push?

There is no question that the Bush Administration is conducting a very effective campaign to garner support for an attack on Iran before he leaves office. The fact that they can do this after the fiasco of Iraq is nothing short of amazing. This is only possible with the support of the voters preoccupied with the failing economy and the roll-over Congress.

Our government is spending more on defense than was spent at the height of Vietnam with uncounted billions going to cronies of the Administration for overpriced weapon systems. In case we have a short memory this is what brought down the Soviet Union.
If the public doesn't wake up and demand controls we are facing a very sharp decline and bankruptcy.

Republicans want to win elecions at any cost. Voters should know it they will do anything to stir up the notion that somehow we wil be attacked soon. Wake up before it is too late.

Sources? Is Mr. Hersh ready to back-up these comments with legitimate sources?

Yes many people have been speculating about another "October Surprise" for some time. Obviously it would create a panic and boost McCain's chances if Iran was attacked. Many people have been claiming that Bush/Cheney wanted to invade Iraq to have a chace to also get access to Iran.

The fact that the Bush adminstation is trying to keep the war machine going is nothing new. That is why it is not getting alot of attention now.
People who connect the dots already know about the intentions of this administration know that they are going to attack IRAN before time runs out

We need to say out of Iran's affairs and pursue a more open dialog with them. Iran is a nation that does not respond well to threats. Too often, America preaches freedom and democracy at the end of a gun barrel. Perhaps we need to practice what we preach at home before going out into the world and continue losing respect. At first approach, an olive branch does more good and an gun.

When America decided to enter into Somilia (sp) at the end of the Bush administration, he coordinated these efforts through the Clinton team as he knew such actions would carry over to the next administration; wise move of the elder statesman. Before the next Bush makes another fatal mistake perhaps he should involve the two candidates as another "mission accomplished" might takes years, if ever to complete.

Sure hope we are wrong again about those WMDs.
