Lieberman says terrorist attack likely

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.lieberman.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman is a backer of McCain."](CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-Independent who is a strong supporter of Republican John McCain's White House bid, suggested Sunday the United States will likely face a terrorist attack in 2009.

The controversial comments followed remarks by top John McCain adviser Charlie Black late last week that a terrorist attack leading up the the general election would probably help the Arizona senator's White House hopes.

Watch: McCain adviser apologizes for comments

"Our enemies will test the new president early," Lieberman told CBS Sunday. "Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration."

McCain and his supporters have long argued the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is better-suited to handle the country's foreign policy challenges than Barack Obama.

Watch: Lieberman touts McCain

"[McCain] knows the world," Lieberman said. "He's been tested. He's ready to protect the security of the American people."

But Lieberman, who served as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, distanced himself from Black's contention that a terrorist attack would boost McCain's chances of winning the Oval Office.

"Sometimes even the best of them say things that are not what they intended to say," Lieberman said. "Certainly the implications there I know were not what Charlie intended. And he apologized for it. Senator McCain said he didn't agree. And, of course, I feel the same way.

Lieberman, who calls himself an "independent Democrat," endorsed McCain in early December.

You know what? The RETHUGS are using Americans blood to win elections and I hope the media sends this fear mongering messages as is so we can take it for what it is.

This is factual that the GOPare planning these attacks themselves

Talk about the lowest form of politics.

Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. Tactics used by repubs to win elections and tacticts used by journalists to get ratings.

They don't belongin politics or journalism.

What kind of people elect such a moronic fool, why blame Joe, he just represents some wildly strange electors in doing his part of what appears to be a split personality mental case.

CNN people please do professional journalism. your headline is false. When I saw the headline, I was surprised. Democrats predicting an attack? I was wondering who he is. When I read the story, it was Lieberman. Its a misleading headline. you can say Ex-democrat or simply Lieberman. "Democrats predict terrorist attack". dont you thinnk it is a misleading headline? He is not a democrat anymore and he is independent and endorsing Mccain. why cant you say Lieberman predicts terrorist attack.

  9. Here They Come again

The Republicans will have you think that the 9/11 attacks took months to years to plan and execute (while Clinton was in office). Now that Bush has been in office 8 years, Lieberman and the Republicans seem to want you to think that if a terrorist attack occurs if/when Obama wins, it's the Democrats fault.
Guys...I don't know if Obama is the answer or not...but I know that what we've been doing isn't working. We need change. We need someone to stand up for the American people. Vote your conscious people...not along party lines.

Can anyone remember when the last "elevated alert" was? Well get ready, because we are likely to have several between now and the election. Dealing the fear card from the bottom of the deck is a desperation move, but it's the only move they have.

I predict a celebrity will commit suicide next year. I predict another democracy in the world will fail. I predict the world will end in the year 2725. These sort of predictions are too funny. It's like when you read a headline that says "scientists at the university of ABC have discovered smoking is bad for you."

Please correct your misleading headline on the frontpage – Joe Lieberman was ousted by the Democratic voters in a primary. He's no Democrat – he's an independent.

    Mr. Lieberman,
It is good to know that your political careear is in it's twilight years, so the rest of us won't have to deal with your overtly Zionist agenda. War-mongering went out of style in about 2005, so if you could just quiet down with the anti-Iranian, terrorist-fearing rhetoric during the election cycle we would all be more informed voters for it. Watch out for Lieberman, Secretary of Defense.

  16. Had Enough

If Joe Lieberman and Charlie Black can't scare the public with their terrorist bogeyman, the Decider-In-Chief will have to declare war on Iran in order to play to John McCain's only campaign strength...

The really sad part of this whole thing is the number of Americans that can't tell the difference between fear mongering motivated by political desperation versus reality.

An admission by McCain's campaign that the policies of George W. Bush and the Dept. of Homeland Security will be judged by history as having been unsuccessful. Perhaps they need to attack civil liberties in the United States Constitution even more!

America be prepared they are telling us that there is a terrorist attack that is going to happen and they know about it but they are not going to do anything too stop it. That is how sick these Republicans are. To get what they want they would allow another attack where thousands upon thousands of people will get killed and they are going too sit back and allow it too happen just like they did for 9/11. So they can give them a reason too attack Iran. Just like they used it for Iraq. Wake up America stop worrying about Madonna, Britney, Beyonce, and all of these other celebrities and pay attention too what these mad men are doing who's running the country. We have dictators in office.

I think most anyone with brains has noticed the pattern of attacking a new administration in the Oval Office. So, why do people keep talking about it in the media? I don't think it is in the best interests of national security to do so.

Why let potential attackers know what you are thinking, even if it is disinformation? I've found the best approach is to take a page from mother nature's playbook. Play dumb and dead.

Liberman is the biggest liar of all the politians. He told his state if they voted for him he would side with the democrats. I hope his state is paying attention for the next time he is up for re-election. This is one man NOT to be trusted.

  22. McCain/ Bush 08

Bin Laden will do every thing to get McCain elected...

Staying in Iraq for a longer period of time will destroy America, hurt the economy and weaken the millitary.
Obama vision of leaving Iraq and concentrating in Afghanistan is a nightmare for Alqaeda and they will do every thing to prevent it. McCain/ Bush policies is helping Alqaeda and it is getting stronger.
Americans need to be smart and change course

Leiberman is a nutcase hoping that people will vote for McSame because of his fear mongering. He doesn't realize that we are not stupid and will not fall for it. We are smarter than that this time!! Look where fearmongering got us in the first place. 8 years of Bush! No Way. Keep your mouth quiet Lieberman. It will not work.

Hope the voters in Lieberman's state vote him out.

He is just fear-mongering like the republicans do and have done for years.

If there's an attack of any kind, it just shows the republican incompetence. Warning us that the incompentency has cost us us?

Makes me sick sick sick sick. Guess McWarmonger will pick this up now that Lieberman has whispered it in his ear.

Go Obama – diplomacy will work
