Lieberman says terrorist attack likely

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.lieberman.gi.jpg caption="Lieberman is a backer of McCain."](CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-Independent who is a strong supporter of Republican John McCain's White House bid, suggested Sunday the United States will likely face a terrorist attack in 2009.

The controversial comments followed remarks by top John McCain adviser Charlie Black late last week that a terrorist attack leading up the the general election would probably help the Arizona senator's White House hopes.

Watch: McCain adviser apologizes for comments

"Our enemies will test the new president early," Lieberman told CBS Sunday. "Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration."

McCain and his supporters have long argued the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is better-suited to handle the country's foreign policy challenges than Barack Obama.

Watch: Lieberman touts McCain

"[McCain] knows the world," Lieberman said. "He's been tested. He's ready to protect the security of the American people."

But Lieberman, who served as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, distanced himself from Black's contention that a terrorist attack would boost McCain's chances of winning the Oval Office.

"Sometimes even the best of them say things that are not what they intended to say," Lieberman said. "Certainly the implications there I know were not what Charlie intended. And he apologized for it. Senator McCain said he didn't agree. And, of course, I feel the same way.

Lieberman, who calls himself an "independent Democrat," endorsed McCain in early December.

It's clear that Lieberman drank too much of the Kool-Aid. Here's a tip for Lieberman: you cannot scare me into relinquishing my liberty. Living in a free country is risky but well worth defending the freedom that you and your Republican friends have tried to destroy.

Democrats plan to dust off the U.S. Constitution and re-deploy it! You and your scare-mongers should go hide under your beds if you're too afraid to live free. Due process, judicial review, accountability, clean air, and sunshine are coming back in style. False patriots are no longer welcome.

Isn't it funny how the Republicans always claim that they are the "strong" party and that Democrats are "weak", yet it's the Democrats who always see right through this fear-mongering rhetoric, and it's the scared sheep Republicans that believe them, and continue to vote out of fear.

I think Lieberman is just stating a fact about the last 2 terror attacks that have taken place on US soil. Now if something did happen in the first year of Obama/McCain's presidency who would you want making that call? I would rather it be McCain, but that's the decision we all need to make. If you don't think this that big of a deal then put it lower on your priority list and vote for the candidate that agrees with you on your #1 priority, whatever that might be.

Stop the dumb attacks to!!! Can't we have a legitimate debate here?

I see the Obamabots are out with their typical responses and attacks. I suppose they will also find a way to say Lieberman is a racist as well.

    Lieberman's theme song –
"Looking For Love in All the Wrong Places."

Couldn't make it as a Democrat,
Couldn't make it as an Independant,
Won't make it as a Republican.

It doesn't matter who is in the White House!!! Terrorist Attacks are the way we live!!!! As I remember it President Bush did not act quickly when he was in Florida reading books to elementary students, maybe it was the only book he could read and understand! LOL In many of my previous post I talked about the Republican Scare tatics comming out to play soon, but I never thought it would be this soon!

Citizens of the U.S don't be scared!!! Stand Strong for your Country! It is up to us to be vigilent in voting this year! We won't be scared again! Don't vote McSame for another 4 years of FAILED International POLICY!

I highly doubt that John McSame will be able to stay up late & getting up early dealing with any terrorist situations! He can barely stay up during the afternoon! Hey someone give McSame a NO DOZE!

Lieberman is now a suspect and not a person for any respect. Now I doubt why those SAUDIS bomb twin towers instead of many other politically sensitive targets.

Further, BUSH did not follow the SAUDI TRAIL of those 911 bombers but started bombing in Iraq! No Iraqis involved in the 911 attack.

Lieberman must be arrested and drilled about this information.

I think old Joe has gone senile. I am a democrat that will not support Obama in the fall, but these statements are absurd. I guess Joe and the republicans once again want America to believe that there is a terrorist under every rock.

  19. Clinton, no, wait, McCain Supporter

While those who speak the truth are heralded in some countries, here you're hammered if you do that – especially in an election year. Does anybody REALLY think this is not a possibility, even a probability?

Does anyone REALLY think this fear is not quietly shared by every American who is thinking at all? I'm no fan of Leiberman, but he is NOT John McCain.

And for those die-hard Democrats who will use these remarks to paint McCain as a fear monger, this is the guy YOU ran for VP, not McCain or the Republicans. So much for the good judgment of Dems in America in the beginning of the 21st century.

And here we go! It's so simple.

    1) A terrorist attack will happen.
    2) John McCain is better for national security.
    3) We must elect John McCain.

Hopefully Americans are a little smarter than to fall for this ruse again. If we've been doing such a good job in building up homeland security and defeating terrorism all over the world, why will this happen as soon as George W leaves office? I know...lets let HIM stay in office to keep us safe for another four years. It's just as ridiculous as electing John McCain or believing anything Lieberman says.

Hopefully the Democrats will stop letting this poser caucus with them.

Senator Lieberman should tell us where and when the attack will happen since he knows it will occur in 2009. Perhaps this attack will be used as the reason for us to go to war with Iran. My fellow Americans, don't be fooled by this fear mongering. The current administration has done nothing but make us weaker in every since of the word and now we re all suffering financially because of the money used for this bogus war.

The comment is historically accurate going back to the Kennedy Administration and the Cuban missile crisis. There is nothing controversial here, our enemies whoever they might be at any given time will always test a new administration. This is a historical fact, not a "controversial" comment.

They actually WANT a terrorist attack?!

    Lieberman is the true terrorist!

    from dictionary.com-

    ╦łterrorist noun

a person who tries to frighten people or governments into doing what he/she wants by using or threatening violence"

Don't fall for the Left-Right paradigm. Obama is also just a puppet.
