McCain Truth Squad defender was Swift Boat Vet member

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.budday.cnn.jpg caption="Former Col. Bud Day appeared in a 2004 Swift Boat Vets spot."] (CNN) - One of the members of John McCain’s new Truth Squad - which his campaign says was launched to respond to unfair attacks on his record of military service –- was a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and appeared in an attack ad for the group in 2004.

The group was created to attack 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry’s military service record.

"How can you expect our sons and daughters to follow you when you condemned their fathers and grandfathers?" asked former Air Force Col. Bud Day, who was a prisoner of war with McCain in Vietnam, in a 2004 Swift Boat Vets spot.

McCain has said that he opposed the group’s efforts.

On a campaign conference call Monday, a Politico reporter asked Day if there was any similarity between former Gen. Wesley Clark’s controversial Sunday comments about McCain’s military service and his own remarks about John Kerry during the last presidential campaign.

Day dismissed any equivalence. "The Swift Boat 'attacks' were simply revelation of the truth. The similarity does not exist here," he said. "…One was about laying out the truth. This one is about attempting to cast a new shadow on John McCain."

It is shameful when you wear military awards to try and persuade people you are truthful.

Bud Day is a disgrace to The Medal of Honor.

John McCain was awarded 1-1/2 medals for every hour he was in actual combat. (28 medals for 20 hours)

Wow, Senator McCain's presidential campaign must really be floundering big-time if he is using the Swift-Boat People so very early in his campaign.

Soon he'll be clothing himself in the Harry Truman underdog label.

McTruth – what a crock! This is all about money, making it and keeping it for the rich.

The rest is all fantasy – like John McBush's here status!

Proud Vet. You should know the significance of the Medal of Honor, and what it signifies about the recipient and his character. You Obama supporters choose to close your eyes to reality. You just want to spread vicious lies about Americans who have sacrificed more than Obama ever has or will for their country. By the way, McCain repudiated the swift boat ads in 2004. Of course, you guys have your own delusional version of history too.

I agree with Wesley Clark; McCain's service by itself is not "qualifications" for the presidency. McCain is showing his age by the flip-flops and misrepresentations he is making about his record; not to mention the garbage he is peddling on Obama.

It is judgment that makes a leader and the record is clear: on 95% of the issues (by McCain's own words – check out YouTube if you don't believe me), McCain aligned himself with George W. Bush. Sorry, but you cannot hide that fact just because Bush has the lowest approval ratings in history!

McCain has surrendered his principles for the sake of running. As an independent, I look forward to voting for Barack Obama in November.

"PROUD VET June 30th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

    to that demetrius thing:

paul bremmer, the cia guy and rumsfeld also have those ribbons around their necks and what did they accomplish"

Obviously you are NOT the vet you claim to be, or you would recognize that the medal worn by Col. Day is in fact THE MEDAL OF HONOR!!

It is not the civilian award Medal of Freedom, as you, in your ignorance, believe.

Col. Day, by the way, is the most decorated member of our armed services since Douglas MacArthur. You probably don't recognize that name, either.

I AM, in fact, a very PROUD VET!

Life is good, you should get one!

One need only compare John McCain and Bud Day's military service to John Kerry and Wesley Clark’s to know why this is a laughable argument from CNN. Although..., it's not surprising that CNN doesn't know the difference..

It is difficult to get past the Swift Boat tag ... these people demeaned the country, its citzens, along with our democratic principles. Was it they also who wanted open-ended, unqualified, unquestioning support for the "Iraq War?" What bags of gas Day and his colleagues seem to still be. Please move to some other planet.

Once again for all the INTELLIGENT people –

Alot of you are saying you can't vote for Obama because he flip flops..... and that is a reasonable argument about his stance on issues. Fair enough. Now let's look at it with a little logic, ok. If you went on a road trip, printed out by Mapquest ( or your GPS) and WAY down the road you found out you got incorrect information and you are going the wrong direction ( you are lost), would you turn around or be like Chris Columbus and "search for the east by sailing west"? Well I would turn around... If Bush and Mccain take a position and they found out it is wrong they will never change course. AMERICANS WAKE UP, you must change course if you are headed the wrong direction. Flip flopping to get to the correct solution shouldn't be a crime..... We make it a crime and see what happen, the economy suffers. Bush was so scared of going back on his word............ NOW WE SUFFER. Is this why you need Mccain?

More scum from scum bags. I don't discount anyones military service, but to say that will make you a better president, then where were the republi-morons when they voted Bush in 00 and 04. He has no military anything, and was a c student at best, yet that was O.K. for them now as the try to elect a POW c student, that is so out of touch with what our country needs it is scary. We need open minded individuals to run our country not some cold war era propagandist that wants to furthe The stupid wealty agenda. The Swift boaters are a true debacle of moral ignorance, to go from war heros to turn into political pawns. Also any one notice all these people are over 70, does anyone else not want their crotchety Grandparents running a country that hypothetically is not theirs to runn anymore?

i agree, what clark said wasn't that bad, besides, the goal isn't to get shot down anyways, your suppose to make it home safe, he got shot down, then was whipped and beaten for 5 years, ummm besides the patriotism i wouldn't want this man leading the country because after all, he obviously made a mistake if he got shot down, he wasn't the leader, the best, i'm sure others made it home, jmac got shot down so i wouldn't want him to lead this country in a downward spiral

As a Viet Nam Vet I have absolutely no respect for the "Swiftboater" They remind me of the types in Viet Nam that blamed others for their lack of ability. If these guys are at it again I think that they will do more damage than good.

Remember "Fool me once , shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me."

Mike from Syracuse. Your kind of reason is why people are no longer voting for Republicans. You all are hypocrits. John McCain did nothing to stop the so called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. He did nothing to defend John Kerry. Now he is using the same people that were responsible for spreading the LIES about John Kerry to attack Barack Obama. How is it OK to question John Kerry's military service, but not John McCain's. Americans are sick of this crap and that is why they are voting for Barack Obama!

What can you expect from McCain ?
    Decency ?
    Honesty ?
Or just the usual flip-flop as he struggles to keep his foundering campaign alive ?

Will McCain protect America the way he protected military information as a POW?

From the article written by McCain in May 1973 for US News & World Report –

I think it was on the fourth day that two guards came in, instead of one. One of them pulled back the blanket to show the other guard my injury……..I said, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital."

They took me up into one of the interrogation rooms, and for the next 12 hours we wrote and rewrote. The North Vietnamese interrogator, who was pretty stupid, wrote the final confession, and I signed it. It was in their language, and spoke about black crimes, and other generalities.

This is the Military Code of Conduct
The Code: Consisting of six articles in simple language, the United States Military Code of Conduct orders American military personnel to resist capture at all cost and if captured; to attempt to escape, to give the enemy no information other than name, rank, serial number and date of birth, to take charge if senior, to obey orders of the seniors, to accept no favors from the enemy and to make no written or oral statements disloyal to the United States.

I don't know about any of you, but this kind of protection I can do without.

McCain admonishes Obama for wanting to talk to the Iranian government, but he himself collaborated with the enemy with whom we were at war. Isn't what he did much worse than just talking to someone with whom we are trying to prevent going to war?

  20. I used to be a Democrat

Wesley Clark never held any kind of office and wasn't much of a General either. Why does anybody care what he thinks? He joined the Democrats just to run for President, which he failed miserably at. Flip-flopper.

The word "Truth" has been taking a beating within the McCain camp, unless the word "Truth" isdefined as "political propoganda". I used to like McCain but he has become encrusted by the political lobbyist establishment in Washington and has lost his sense of Values.

John McCain is getting the same treatment that they gave Kerry in 2004. They are questioning his military service. I personally don't think just because you were a prisner of war that means that you will be a great leader. I think he is just too old too be President and that is the truth. If he was trying to apply to the post office they woudln't be able to hire him because of his age, but, we feel that a person that age can run the country. Not eligible to handle mail but can run the country.

  24. hmmmmm.....smells fishy

Mc Cracka.......he can say anything and change anything and the press and GOP eat it up........his years of service in the military should not be held any higher than any other soldier......he thinks because he is a public figure that he is special.......he doesn't understand he is wearing republican brand and what we want is a reason why we should keep supporting the republicans........I still haven't heard a reason why to keep supporting the unaccountable GOP........except that Obama is black......or is it just me
