Obama to deliver 'major speech' on patriotism

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.obamaflag.gi.jpg caption="Obama has been looking to emphasize his patriotism."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to deliver what his campaign is calling a "major speech" Monday, centering around an issue he's been trying to highlight for months now: his patriotism.

The remarks come in Harry Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri, just days before the Fourth of July.

"Sen. Obama will discuss what patriotism means to him and what it requires of all Americans who love this country and want to see it do better," Obama spokesman Bill Burton wrote in a morning email to reporters.

The Illinois senator has been defending his patriotism ever since the days of Iowa when he was first criticized for not wearing a flag pin - which he now does much more frequently - and when false rumors began circulating that he did not say the Pledge of Allegiance.

He was also seen without his hand over his heart during a rendition of the National Anthem.

Obama's wife, Michelle, has been on the receiving end of attacks over her patriotism, after telling an audience at a campaign event, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."

Senator Obama will follow up Monday's speech on patriotism with a Tuesday address focused on faith, and remarks on service Wednesday and Thursday. He will spend Friday, July 4 in Butte, Montana - with the whole Obama family out on the trail.

Here we go again! Another speech from Mr. Teleprompter.

    How about a debate?

And for the record, the pic mentioned doesn't "seem" to show Obama without his hand over his heart–It DOES show him that way.

And Obama, YOU of all people are not going to tell ME how to be patriotic. You soaked up 20 years of anti-American garbage from
Jeremiah Wright (I refuse to call him a reverend,) and you didn't bat an eye.

2 Things Obama owes the American public:

    1) Debate (It's the American way)
    2) Proof of Native Born (Also the American way because it is a
    Constitutional requirement)

I know this is one I can't wait to hear!!! BULLCRAP......I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING THIS MAN OR HIS WIFE HAS TO SAY ABOUT PATRIOTISM. WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT OBAMA. IS IT BECAUSE HE'S YOUNG CAN MAKE A SPEECH EVEN IF HE CONTRADICTS HIMSELF THAT YOU BELIEVE IN. REV. WRIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH. REZKO IS NOT ENOUGH, HIS LYING ABOUT NEVER HEARING REV. WRIGHT UNTIL THE PRESS AIRED THEN THE NEXT DAY IN HIS OH MY GREAT SPEECH HE CONTRADICTS HIMSELF BY SAYING OH I HEARD HIM I JUST NEVER REALLY BELIEVED ALL HE SAID NOT ENOUGH. HIM USING COCAINE NOT ENOUGH, IMPLICATIONS OF BEING GAY NOT ENOUGH. HAVING A TERRORIST WORKING ON HIS SENATOR CAMPAIGN IN IL NOT ENOUGH. HIS WIFE STATING SHE WAS NEVER REALLY PROUD OF AMERICA UNTIL TODAY. HIS WANTING TO RETREAT OUT OF IRAQ LIKE VIET NAM IS NOT ENOUGH. HIS WANTING TO CUT FUNDING TO THE MILITARY IS NOT ENOUGH. HIS WANTING TO DO AWAY WITH STATE'S RIGHTS ON THE DEATH PENALTY AND THE TAKING AWAY OF ARMS IS NOT ENOUGH. WHAT CRAP WAKE UP AMERICA. WHAT LOW MENTALITY YOU PEOPLE HAVE. I GIVE UP. I AT LEAST WILL HAVE A CLEAN CONSCIOUS WHEN THIS MAN TAKES AMERICA DOWN.

Republicans seem to think "Patriotism" means you served in the Military or you wear a flag pin.

Does that mean all the millions that can't or won't aren't Patriotic?

When I say "won't" – maybe it means they don't believe in War or violence/fighting but instead prefer to serve their country in other ways – like through government work, volunteering, teaching etc. etc.

Getting shot down in a Navy fighter plane isn't a or "the" qualification to be President. Leadership, vision, inspiration and love for ones country are some good qualificaitons in my opinion.

I think Obama is a patriot by his actions. He's just doing this speech to please people who were mad about some lapel pin. The same people who probably get mad if someone isn't wearing a cross to show their spirituality, when again actions should speak for themselves not a pin - whether it's the flag or the cross.

It's a sad day when a candidate has to defend his patriotism..what do you Obama hater idiots think? that he became a senator because he has some secret 'agenda'. Or that he worked in the community because he hated America? Geez.take a look in the mirror, many of you Obama haters are hiding behind deep rooted racism, and are looking for ANYTHING to not like about the guy...Now that's unpatriotic!

    Dear Hello!!!!,

No, he's not lecturing us, he's telling us about his patriotism, which he wouldn't have to do, if it weren't for haters like you. I know Senator Obama is patriotic, and it is absurd that anyone would question his patriotism.

Hello, American pride comes in all colors, shapes, siizes, and both genders.

  8. NEVER Obama

The installed against the wishes and votes of the people nominee needs to KEEP making SPEECHES to justify his ever-changing positions and to legitimize the illegality of his nomination.

The Democrats deserve to lose in NOV just for the travesty of justice and freedom.
    PUMA PACer
The big picture is NOT unity of the Democratic Party.

The big picture is fair elections, and saying NO to cheating and stealing the nomination by playing the race card, trashing fellow democrats, and destroying a candidate of your own party. Hate is NOT a democratic value. Neither is demeaning other human beings just for disagreeing with you.

Go get 'em Obama! Hello America, I'm Barack Obama !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lisa, don't fool yourself, Obama will debate McCain shortly. Obama and McCain are officially in general election mode. Obama and his campaign realize that Obama needs to reach out and campaign for the general election Independents and Hillary-Democrats who are entertaining the idea of supporting McCain at this stage of the election.

McCain is trying to focus this election only on national security and international relations experience. This election will boil down to two main issues, the economy and Iraq. Both will get worse before the year's end.

It's obvious from the comments above that if Jesus Christ came back and ran for office against a Republican many would call him unAmerican, if not unChristian.

Good grief! They're still bringing up the flag pin? Do people really think that you're patriotic just because you wear a pin on your lapel? Or that you're not because you don't? How ridiculous.
Adlai Stevenson once said, "Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime."
In other words, all the flag-waving in the world doesn't make you a patriot.

Its's a pretty simple choice folks, despite all the oil drilling talk, flag pin wearing, name calling silliness:

Vote McCain: If you like where the country is headed at this moment
Vote Obama: If you want change

Another chance to listen to a lot of nothing from my favorite Hot Air Machine. Of course it will be prepared by others with pieces of many speeches offered by genuine patriots-check with Duvall Patrick and maybe even of few well chosen MLK and JFK phrases.

Speeches like this are meaningless. If you have to give us all a lecture on swell and "deep" you are, we are obviously are not convinced by anything you've actually done.

But do you have as few national advisors as they say you do? Are you running on empty regarding real issues, real facts, real solutions? I mean something other than "Change," or "Change We Can Believe In?" Running the country is not about believing, pal, it's about knowing something and doing something and having a wealth of EXPERIENCE one can draw on, and that's not you.

PUMA's for life..We are the new guiding power of America and will decide who goes tot he White House..It is called the White House for a reason and we PUMA's now what that means...

Hillary's dream was stolen and given to Obama by the Democratic party. She got the most votes and was supposed to be the nominee until the government put Obama's name and rigged the ballot boxes with his name

    Hillary 08,12 forever !!

Man oh man just when I was starting to come around another "major speech" How about a debate where people can ask questions instead of you talking at them. I think he really is scared of debates. I have never seen such a thing. I mean Hillary will debate you in the back alley if thats where you want it, but Obama always seems to try to dodge them. Come on Obama you cant be as chicken as your looking right now. I also think Mccain is right if obama wants to say something about McCain's service he should do it himself instead of Wesley clark. I am afriad that if Obama decides to take Hillary on he will use her as his attack dog, so she can take the fall when the real negative stuffs starts to come from his campaign.

    Dear California Voter,

That membership in a black liberation church is insulting. The Obamas joined a church, which the last time I looked was still their right in this country. The church spoke of black pride in a neighborhood that needed it. The GOP is always talking about black people doing for themselves, and when you have a neighborhood church that is doing something for the community, and proud of that fact, you still get grief. Get over yourself.
