Obama to deliver 'major speech' on patriotism

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.obamaflag.gi.jpg caption="Obama has been looking to emphasize his patriotism."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to deliver what his campaign is calling a "major speech" Monday, centering around an issue he's been trying to highlight for months now: his patriotism.

The remarks come in Harry Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri, just days before the Fourth of July.

"Sen. Obama will discuss what patriotism means to him and what it requires of all Americans who love this country and want to see it do better," Obama spokesman Bill Burton wrote in a morning email to reporters.

The Illinois senator has been defending his patriotism ever since the days of Iowa when he was first criticized for not wearing a flag pin - which he now does much more frequently - and when false rumors began circulating that he did not say the Pledge of Allegiance.

He was also seen without his hand over his heart during a rendition of the National Anthem.

Obama's wife, Michelle, has been on the receiving end of attacks over her patriotism, after telling an audience at a campaign event, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."

Senator Obama will follow up Monday's speech on patriotism with a Tuesday address focused on faith, and remarks on service Wednesday and Thursday. He will spend Friday, July 4 in Butte, Montana - with the whole Obama family out on the trail.

This is pretty ridiculous. You don't run for president if you aren't patriotic. Who wants to age before their time and spend 4-8 years with at least half the country mad at you because you don't govern the way they want? Talk about a thankless job...

It's unfortunate Obama has to do this because there are so many morons out there who actually believe spam emails. Sad.

Obama talks about patriotism, and McCain embodies it. The difference is clear for those who bother to look. He and his 'really proud' wife need to go back to IL, and crawl into whatever hole Rev. Wright is hiding in.

  5. Listen up now Hitler youth

Obama talked his way into stealing the Democratic nomination.

Now he will use the adoring media to fast track him into the White House.

This man is arrogant, cocky, boastful, self serving and full of himself.

    No more speeches.

We are tired of your lies and your spin.

We are tired of being lectured and preached at by a pandering hypocritical politician out to install himself as supreme leader of the people.

Well, don't you know that to win an election in our country for any post, you have to keep repeating your patriotism by pledging your allegiance to Israel......

I always have to LMAO at the anti-Obama critics who act as if he's the pied piper having all of us hypnotized and aimlessly following him, when they can't even see how much Hillary has warped them to believe her every word is truth.....but I digress.
@Scott L-One of the main reason he started back wearing the flag pin again is because a group of veterans came to him and asked him to wear it because it was important to them, and so he started back wearing it. And he was suddenly called a flip flopper. He never said he would never wear a flag pin he simply said he doesn't wear one all the time. And he wouldn’t have to give a speech about patriotism if there weren’t idiots like the women on YouTube...who said they would vote for Hillary b/c they believed she knew the Pledge of Allegiance better than Barack...LOL I still have to laugh at that!

He doesn't need to patronize his country by wear a flag lapel pin to prove he is patriotic. He has proved it already through his years of public service and dedication to his country. Putting an American flag out on your lawn or a car bumper sticker that says "God bless America" doesn't make you patriotic.

What years...all what 3 of them. He has no years of public service...that's the main problem most people have with him...no experience.

Juan asked: "Are we ever going to see anything other than speeches from this guy???"

You will if he's elected President. You know, you can't really do much without getting elected first.... And you'll stand a better chance of getting elected if you can convince some of the idiots that believe every rumor that comes into into their magical inbox.... "Why, that guy's got a funny name. I'll just vote for my same old party. Can anyone give me a ride? I can't afford the gas to drive home."

  12. Grow Up

    Dear Mathew,

There are millions of people who like the sound of Barack's voice. He gives speeches because he is CAMPAIGNING–Hello? Isn't that what you do in a campaign, you people need to grow up.

It's unfortunate that he has to defend his patriotism due to all of these smears. I know I have received emails claiming Obama is a Muslim, blah blah blah.... Since when does wearing a crappy flag pin that was probably made in China make one patriotic.

On another note, hey PUMA's, did yall have fun in FL the other night??? Hope they catch you guys!!!

Get used to his voice, you're going to hear it for the next four years. It is a whole lot better than that buffoon we've been listening to for 8 years.

Can't we just agree that both Obama and McCain are patriotic and go back to the real issues. I'm tired of the "my patriotism is bigger than your patriotism" kind of discussions.

The issue is not who is more patriotic but whose position on the economy, health care, Iraq, gas prices, and similar issues is more aligned with the average voter.

because then this really qould be a election of change. Obama talks aobut being different, yet he's still hold the exact same run that everyother person has...it should be really labeled, Obama for no change.

Man this is why america look dumb to the world. I man that is running for the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA have to show that he is patriotic in the history of the U.S.A i have never heard of this but why now. and have the nerve to say because he dont wear a flag pin or say the Pledge of Allegiance on a daily schedule he is unamercian then that make close to 95% of americas unpatriotic. Man the people in this country need to grow lets say that G.W.BUSH was patriotic and look what he had done to this country so that mean Obama is going to a worst president because a few people cant think for their-selves. SO SINCE I HAVE MY OWN OPINION ON THIS TOPIC IT MAKE ME UNPATRIOTIC TO. AMERICA STOP BEING SCARED AND MAN UP.
