Obama to deliver 'major speech' on patriotism
[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.obamaflag.gi.jpg caption="Obama has been looking to emphasize his patriotism."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to deliver what his campaign is calling a "major speech" Monday, centering around an issue he's been trying to highlight for months now: his patriotism.
The remarks come in Harry Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri, just days before the Fourth of July.
"Sen. Obama will discuss what patriotism means to him and what it requires of all Americans who love this country and want to see it do better," Obama spokesman Bill Burton wrote in a morning email to reporters.
The Illinois senator has been defending his patriotism ever since the days of Iowa when he was first criticized for not wearing a flag pin - which he now does much more frequently - and when false rumors began circulating that he did not say the Pledge of Allegiance.
He was also seen without his hand over his heart during a rendition of the National Anthem.
Obama's wife, Michelle, has been on the receiving end of attacks over her patriotism, after telling an audience at a campaign event, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."
Senator Obama will follow up Monday's speech on patriotism with a Tuesday address focused on faith, and remarks on service Wednesday and Thursday. He will spend Friday, July 4 in Butte, Montana - with the whole Obama family out on the trail.

This is pretty ridiculous. You don't run for president if you aren't patriotic. Who wants to age before their time and spend 4-8 years with at least half the country mad at you because you don't govern the way they want? Talk about a thankless job...
It's unfortunate Obama has to do this because there are so many morons out there who actually believe spam emails. Sad.
Obama talks about patriotism, and McCain embodies it. The difference is clear for those who bother to look. He and his 'really proud' wife need to go back to IL, and crawl into whatever hole Rev. Wright is hiding in.
I don't need another lecture on being an American by someone who thinks he is soooo superior. He's nothing more than a sad a dangerous joke!!

@Scott L-One of the main reason he started back wearing the flag pin again is because a group of veterans came to him and asked him to wear it because it was important to them, and so he started back wearing it. And he was suddenly called a flip flopper. He never said he would never wear a flag pin he simply said he doesn't wear one all the time. And he wouldn’t have to give a speech about patriotism if there weren’t idiots like the women on YouTube...who said they would vote for Hillary b/c they believed she knew the Pledge of Allegiance better than Barack...LOL I still have to laugh at that!

He doesn't need to patronize his country by wear a flag lapel pin to prove he is patriotic. He has proved it already through his years of public service and dedication to his country. Putting an American flag out on your lawn or a car bumper sticker that says "God bless America" doesn't make you patriotic.

Can't we just agree that both Obama and McCain are patriotic and go back to the real issues. I'm tired of the "my patriotism is bigger than your patriotism" kind of discussions.
The issue is not who is more patriotic but whose position on the economy, health care, Iraq, gas prices, and similar issues is more aligned with the average voter.
