Obama to deliver 'major speech' on patriotism

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.obamaflag.gi.jpg caption="Obama has been looking to emphasize his patriotism."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to deliver what his campaign is calling a "major speech" Monday, centering around an issue he's been trying to highlight for months now: his patriotism.

The remarks come in Harry Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri, just days before the Fourth of July.

"Sen. Obama will discuss what patriotism means to him and what it requires of all Americans who love this country and want to see it do better," Obama spokesman Bill Burton wrote in a morning email to reporters.

The Illinois senator has been defending his patriotism ever since the days of Iowa when he was first criticized for not wearing a flag pin - which he now does much more frequently - and when false rumors began circulating that he did not say the Pledge of Allegiance.

He was also seen without his hand over his heart during a rendition of the National Anthem.

Obama's wife, Michelle, has been on the receiving end of attacks over her patriotism, after telling an audience at a campaign event, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."

Senator Obama will follow up Monday's speech on patriotism with a Tuesday address focused on faith, and remarks on service Wednesday and Thursday. He will spend Friday, July 4 in Butte, Montana - with the whole Obama family out on the trail.

  1. How patriotic are you?

All these folks criticizing Obama for his patriotism I wonder how much they have. You don’t have to wear a flag pin or serve in the armed forces to be patriotic. I show my patriotism everyday by abiding by the laws of this country trying to make it a better place by being my best self. People need to get a grip. Waving an American flag around doesn’t make you any more or any less patriotic than the average law abiding citizen. John McCain is not more patriotic than Obama just like he isn’t more patriotic than me or any other citizen here who has not served. I guess he has to give this speech but I don’t really care, we are all proud to be Americans.

the article could be "obama showers every morning" and the SAME people would post comments saying "Obama is so full of himself! He thinks he's cleaner than the rest of us."

Have you ever asked yourself why you have such animosity against him for seemingly no good reason?

Where is you animosity against McCain for voting for the President's position over 90% of the time? The Bush-McCain agenda has sunk our country into a deeper hole than it's been in since the 1920s, yet you are all mad at someone who hasn't had anything to do with that downfall. It doesn't make sense...

Well whatever he said is not true so what? This time he is going to say his grand-grand-father served in Iraq?

With all the major issues facing this country, I'm glad that candidates are forced to make speeches about such meaningless jingoistic cliches as "patriotism".

    What a sad joke.

I can't wait for Obama to speak about his patriotism. GAG!!! You shouldn't have to give a big speech to show your beliefs. Also, enough already with the corny city names that your visiting to coincide with what your doing that day. First it's Unity for your unite w/ HRC day, then it's Independence for your patriotism day, next thing you know you'll be in San Diego praising all of the whale vag's! 🙂

This is a good thing. I don't question his patriotism at all BUT the Republican hate machine has been trying for 7 years to convince people that if you're against the war, you're not a patriot. There are other ways to love your country than to send them to fight and die. We can evolve past that and be patriots who are against war. Not that the haters here will listen or be convinced. It seems so few people have open minds.

This is so stupid. If he was patriotic, he wouldn't have to be making a speech that he is.

I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth.

A vote for Hillary Clinton means never having to say you're sorry.

There is an excellent article this week in TIME magazine about the two distinct ways the right and left tend to look at our nation and the idea of "patriotism" – and how the truth lies, as usual, somewhere in the middle. I highly recommend it as food for thought to those on BOTH sides of the issue.

  15. Another old white woman for Obama

    To all Obama haters:
You are the ones spreading these lying emails and forcing him to defend against the biggest smear campaign in my lifetime.
Racists and the GOP are sending a deluge of misinformation regarding this man.
Lies, lies and more lies have hit the internet as Obama gains popularity. But then they lie about everything else. Wake up! They have all but bankrupted the people as well as our country with their lies. 8 years of lying criminals is 8 years too many.
Stop it! Selfish, illiterate War mongers. Don't you see? They are feeding on the blood of our children. Getting richer while the majority of us are scratching to make ends meet. No more!

Anyone taking bets on when McCain will drop out? The GOP wants to win and they KNOW the've picked a loser. McCain will be gone before the GOP convention.

I don't wear or will ever wear a "flag pin." But I love my country! I have relatives who have fought for this country and I will vote for Obama.

The truth on McSame's war record will soon come out and many will be surprised what they will see.

Watch out for people on this blog acting like they're Hillary's supporters when in fact they're McCain's supporters. Their plan is to divide the democratic party so that we can end up with a third term of Bush with McCain. Democrats and Independents keep your eyes open.

Obama will talk/talk/talk to people who hate this country. He regularly blames the world's woes on the US, and not on the enemies of this country. He does not love the USA; he just says those words to get votes.

McBush is the one who should give an honest speech about patriotish. Just go to Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain and get the real facts about how he treated the families of other prisoners of war. This man has absolutely no integrity and has no business running for president.

When the Dems use Karl Rove tactics its a travesty? Those tactics worked well enough to elect an idiot, why not by someone who really knows what the word diplomacy means?

Its amazing that the people who shout that the dems haven't got anything done in the last four years have a blind eye to the fact that almost every bill that both the house and senate sent to the presidents desk has been vetoed and the republicans haven't enough back bone to do the right thing and overide the veto.

It makes me wonder, do all republicans just leave their tv on faux news all day for their totally unbiased propoganda?
