Obama to deliver 'major speech' on patriotism

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/06/30/art.obamaflag.gi.jpg caption="Obama has been looking to emphasize his patriotism."] CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to deliver what his campaign is calling a "major speech" Monday, centering around an issue he's been trying to highlight for months now: his patriotism.

The remarks come in Harry Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri, just days before the Fourth of July.

"Sen. Obama will discuss what patriotism means to him and what it requires of all Americans who love this country and want to see it do better," Obama spokesman Bill Burton wrote in a morning email to reporters.

The Illinois senator has been defending his patriotism ever since the days of Iowa when he was first criticized for not wearing a flag pin - which he now does much more frequently - and when false rumors began circulating that he did not say the Pledge of Allegiance.

He was also seen without his hand over his heart during a rendition of the National Anthem.

Obama's wife, Michelle, has been on the receiving end of attacks over her patriotism, after telling an audience at a campaign event, "For the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country."

Senator Obama will follow up Monday's speech on patriotism with a Tuesday address focused on faith, and remarks on service Wednesday and Thursday. He will spend Friday, July 4 in Butte, Montana - with the whole Obama family out on the trail.

Yes... Thank you Barack Obama for bringing trust and hopefulness to our presidential race.. I can only hope this country will unite behind you when you become our commander in chief...

I know you can bring the illegal war in Iraq to end, bring down oil prices, bring healthcare to a realistic forefront for families and shed away the hate many people have expressed through their views..

Your proven leadership is exactly what the world is waiting for..

I look forward to your speech...

    Yes..>WE<... Can...

How sad that we show such disrespect to each other in this country. Somethings will never change. Racism in America is "LIVE AND WELL". this blog is proving that. SO SAD

Not another self-serving speech! Truth is, there are thousands of Americans more patriotic than Obama - and they are VOLUNTARILY and bravely serving their country overseas. Can't think of anything this man will say that could "move" me again. Gave him some benefit of the doubt during the Jeremiah Wright speech. But afterwards his true color started showing - nothing but a slick opportunist, corrupt Chicago politician, and charlatain. But wait - maybe this time he'll wipe a "tear" out of his eyes - and there will be a quick close-up of Michelle doing the same thing, of course - and the kiddies will swoon again! The emperor with no clothes - and everyone goes "AHHHHH," doesn't he look good!

It's the campaign, folks, and speeches are part of how the candidates communicate. The fact that Obama is a fine orator doesn't mean he can't or doesn't also "walk the walk." And, for that matter, the fact that McCain is a poor statesman doesn't mean he is capable in any other way.

Sen. Obama has had to confront smears of his (and Michelle's) character from the very beginning, and he deserves any and every opportunity to represent himself more truly. I look forward to many fine speeches–with actions to match–when he is the President of the United States.

The brain-dead dittoheads and fans of talk radio still think he's a Muslim. While I admire his attempt to explain his patriotism, for the people that still think Dumbya is doing a heckuva job, he should remember that, in order to change someone's mind, they have to have a mind in the first place...

Sure I love my country more than Senator Obama does, just don't make me or Cindy pay taxes on our $100 million dollars and don't ever look into the Keating Savings and Loan scandal.

But when I was in Nam getting my breakfast handed to me everyday I had to pretend to hate everyone of you dumb S.O.B.s

Wesley Clark is an unpatriotic idiot regarding his comments about McCain. Obama is the same with the people he surrounds himself. His experience is 143 days in actual days in the Senate. Take away the prompter and he is a stuttering, bumbling idiot. However, the American people are dumber than dirt if they vote for him. He is plainly telling them what he believes in and it resembles socialism/communism. The people of Venezuela did not listen and voted in the same mind set and now will probably have to have a civil war to reclaim any of their freedoms. Is that what we will ask of our children and grandchildren when we find the freedoms which make us America stripped away by the policies of Obama? Wake up, America!!!!!!!!!!

We do turn off the TV when Obama comes on. Thanks for the advice. The nerve Obama has to talk about patriotism. McCain will win in November. The more Obama talks the more people pull away. And
    susie who said:
Well whatever he said is not true so what? This time he is going to say his grand-grand-father served in Iraq?

That was funny. Thank you for making me smile this Monday morning.

Obama's concept of patriotism involves America's citizens and small businesses having less disposable income so he can move us into a new age of Socialism wherein the government becomes our mommy and daddy. When he speaks about change, he's really talking about what we will have left in your pockets after he's done with us.

Just because we're used to a bonobo chimp running our country does NOT mean that Presidents aren't supposed to inspire us anymore! Obama is going to be one of the best Presidents this country has ever had. I hope all of the haters watch this speech tonight, and actually listen to what the man is saying.

Don't blame him for spin; if you're really tired of all the spin, just listen to what he's saying. You're not electing CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, Olbermann, O'Reilly or any other talking head to be President. So just listen to the man!

I am a democrat that will not support Obama in the fall, I will be staying home on election day. Once again Obama is going to TALK about his patriotism. I for one have heard enough rhetoric out of Obama, he is all tak and no action. Obama is an empty suit running on arrogance and ego, with his own best interest at heart, not the best interest of the nation.

Independent-woman-4-Obama, a little history lesson. This is not a democracy. We practice democracy at the federal level but this is a Republic. The founders were not for one democracy to control all states but rather a union of independent and sovreign states. The purpose of creating and maintaining this Republic was to ensure that people like Barack Obama could not turn this country into a socialist welfare state dependent on a central government. GWB is more a threat to our liberty than he is our democracy but don't for one second think that Barack Obama is any different. He is a globalist with an idea for a nanny state that provides you with everything at the cost of your freedom. He has not ruled out attacking and has even endorsed the idea of involving outselves in the affairs of other nations. IMHO he is the worst threat to our Repubic that has ever been.

its sad that he has to do this, but so many people have their heads up their fannys when it comes to Patriotism and get drawn in by empty slogans and imagery. Anybody can stick an American flag sticker on their car, but in the end actions speak louder than words.......Are you trying to make our country better, or are you content with the "way things are"? Do you care about ALL americans or just those with 7 figure incomes? Do you care more about starting wars than the young men and women you send to die in them?.............................The american people should ask such questions the next time they see our current president wrap himself in Old Glory.

Speech on race, fatherhood, religion, sexism, and now patriotism. This guy is a joke, all he knows is give speeches so that he avoids dealing with the real issues. How about a speech on the gas-prices-crisis, the economy, foreclosure, the war in Iraq, etc. Obama can you please stop your non-substance speeches, and tell us how you are going to address the real issues this wonderful nation is facing. I am so sick of this idiot!

WRITE IN HILLARY OR VOTE MCCAIN.
