Dem wants to ban future Roves from the White House

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/08/art.rove.gi.jpg caption="Rove is a former top Bush aide."](CNN) - The future Karl Roves of the world may be outlawed from working in the White House.

Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman, the chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, suggested to a Capitol Hill newspaper that he is considering legislation that bans the use of federal money to fund a position similar to the one the longtime Bush aide held in the White House.

Rove, who orchestrated both of the president's successful electoral victories, headed the White House's Office of Political Affairs and the Office of Public Liaison during Bush's first term. Democrats have long accused Rove of using those offices - which include interacting with political committees and interest groups - to essentially run the president's 2004 reelection campaign.

“Why should we be using taxpayer dollars to have a person solely in charge of politics in the White House?” Waxman told The Hill. “Can you imagine the reaction if each member of Congress had a campaign person paid for with taxpayer dollars?”

Ethics rules in the Senate are considerably clearer when it comes to conducting political business: congressional aides are banned from using government phones, e-mail, and computers for any politically-related job.

Waxman's office confirmed the accuracy of the quotes, but would not comment further.

Brandon Hillary PUMA – your post is the saddest thing I've seen in a while. Really? You are still harping on SUPERDELEGATE VOTES? It would be funny if it wasn't so sad...

This whole administration should be charged with war crimes and be suitably dealt with. The willingness of Americans to be complacent in the face of criminal government abuses scares me more than anything else these days.

Good move, and keep in mind that it would apply to Democrats as well.

Republican and Democrats should both be in favor of free and open government, and nonprejudiced utilization of government funds. Look at it this way Republicans, you were forced against your will to spend tax dollars funding Bush's reelection campaign, and the campaigns of Republicans in other states, whether you wanted to or not. Is that acceptable?

It should have happened yesterday, what are you waiting for?

You know Barack is going to do away with that office as soon as he gets in the White House.

Bush needed Karl, because he doesn't have a brain, so any way, any title to keep Karl in the White House everyday was fine with Bush. So he gave him a phoney title and pretended he was making his own decisions.

Bush was a puppet and everyone knows it. When his brain took America apart piece by piece...and then ran out he back door, Bush was in trouble.

The WORST PRESIDENT IN MODERN HISTORY had help to become the worst president in modern history.

Put Karl in jail, and GW if you can. War criminals. God bless America, because they ruined it.

I think the President–regardless of party should exercise sole discretion of his White House staff.

What we need to do Mr. Waxman–is not elect felonious Presidents who have no respect for the personal sacrifice taxpayers make in expending the finances they are entrusted with. That philosophy extends to the congress.

Vote out all incumbents–this place needs a patriotic enema.

Rove is a traitor and should meet his fate as all traitor should. Anyone who exposes agents for the political advantage should be in jail to start. Libby was the fall guy. the one they were willing to sacrifice.

I don't support Bush but this is needless legislation that won't do anything but allow Waxman to grandstand! And the congress does have oversight into what gets spent in the country. Yet, did they do anything about this? Nope! They just keep giving blank checks to the President and then go off in the corner and whine about it.

Good idea. Once president, that person needs to represent the United States, not a political party, as Bush & Rove have done.

No more Rove's in the White House is a good start. Next steps, sending Rove to the Big-House.

Finger-pointing and factional sniping aside, of course this makes sense and always has. Regardless of which party is in the White House, using general federal revenue to fund factional operations on behalf of the president - of any party - is poor use of public money.

Well of course they don't want another Rove, he's a genius who's not on their side. Naturally, if someone in the democratic party was as smart as Rove, this issue wouldn't even come up.

Genius? yea one who has broken the law and whose campaign tactics are tearing down the other candidate with whisper campaigns (McCain in SC in 2000) and Swift-Boating (Kerry 2004)...yea he's a real stand-up guy...
