Obama camp calls New Yorker cover 'tasteless and offensive'

(CNN) - Barack Obama's campaign has sharply criticized The New Yorker magazine over the publication's latest cover illustration that appears to portray the Illinois senator and his wife, Michelle, as terrorist enemies of the United States.

Specifically, the cover, published Sunday, shows Obama in the Oval Office dressed in traditional Muslim attire and Michelle with an "Afro" hairstyle carrying a machine gun. An American flag can also be seen burning in the fire place and a picture of Osama bin Laden hangs on the wall.

Watch: Journalists debate the New Yorker Cover

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

John McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said he agreed with Burton's sentiment.

Obama himself refused to comment on the illustration Sunday.

    Get over it Obama.

While the drawing may have been a little over the top, it is honest to state that Obama and Michele would destroy this great country.

We cannot afford to have these Marxists in the White House.

To many taking a glance at the cover of the New Yorker, this picture erroneously solidifies their own thoughts and prejudices against the Obamas. It's withouout a doubt, an inflammatory cover, but too many people think these caricatures of Barack and Michelle are accurate because that is what they choose to believe.

Unfortunately, the media has been quick to put great emphasis on falsehoods and misconceptions that have plagued the Obama campaign from the beginning, all for the sake of creationg "buzz" for their magazines or articles.

I have faith, however, that these distractions will mean little when pocket book issues are front and center in the minds of most hardworking Americans. When faced with the option of buying food or buying gas, paying your power bill or buying your medications, the choice of the next president is obvious. John McCain only represents the failed policies of the Bush administration and this country can no longer afford to indulge itself in such destructive behavior going forward.

This is only a very small taste of what's to come! I am sure that Obama, his camp and the DNC were all having a good ol time when the press was unloading on Hillary well as soon as he is crowned the official nominee, he is going to get it 10x worse!

    What comes around goes around!

    NOBAMA!

Absolutely awful and tasteless–although one expects it from The New Yorker. That magazine never ceases to amaze me how offensive they all are.

it is tasteless. I know that it's satire, but considering the ignorance and bigotry that is still prevalant, especially in the south, it is dangerous. where a normal, educated person sees cartoon, the "good ole boys" will see and and say, " hey, that's true".

That's the danger of this, but it is the USA and people have a right to free speech, it's what our troops are supposed to be fighting for.

Although, I wish someone would explain this concept to the war criminals that have all but destroyed our civil liberties over their lies and sheer incompetence. If you vote for Mcbush, you will get more of the same.

From reading some of the comments already on this board I can say that the picture does not make people think but re-confirm the bad image they already have of obama. And brings back into the limelight what obama has already denied even if some still do not believe him. To the New Yorker a big thanks but no thanks.

I've always like the New Yorker and always enjoyed their cover. The people that will not vote for Barak will not vote for him regardless of what they hear or see. The intelligent and independent thinkers will not only look at the cover, but, they will also read the article. I just hope that all the smart people go to the voting booth and turn this country around. This is not going to be an election about Republicans or Democrats, it will be the educated against the non thinkers.

doesn't matter Barack Obama is going to roll over McSame no matter how many cartoons are printed the American people are waiting until Nov, and then we are going to come out and vote in the biggest landslide victory for Barack Obama in American history, Any way nobody buys rag magizines like that anymore, the New Yorker is a washed up has been, a by gone era just like McSame and the GOP. We are in the digital age people. Not the old tape and reel to reel era like Magizines and McSame. Get used to it.

The New Yorker, under the guise of elitist 'satire', reinforces a stereotype that Obama has been working diligently to refute. The New Yorker shows there is no form of journalism that hasn't become a high priced prostitute. Anything for the buck. Maybe journalism needs to crawl out of the womb of "corporate lackeys" and be regulated like lawyers and doctors. Maybe then, some type of remedy is available for 'ethics violations'.

Shameful at best. Racist and anti-American is what the picture says. There was and is no need to represent someone who could very well be the next President of the USA this way. What do you think the terrorists are saying about American? "They eat their own"

A sleazy soon-to-be failed pseudo-politician who's an "adulation junkie" (See Jonah Goldberg's "Ego-Bama, Swallow Some of that Pride") with no record to suggest he could govern anything more than a fan club calling the New Yorker "tasteless."

    Priceless.
