Obama suddenly the cash underdog?

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/14/art.obamacamp.cnn.jpg caption="Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe says McCain has the financial advantage."](CNN) - Is Barack Obama the new campaign cash underdog?

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe seemed to say Monday that the Illinois senator - who has raised well over $275 million and smashed just about every political fundraising record over the course of his 18-month bid for the White House - might find himself at a disadvantage against a joint effort by the Republican National Committee and John McCain's presidential campaign that told reporters last week it had nearly $100 million cash-on-hand as of June 30.

In an e-mail to potential donors, Plouffe said the Arizona senator has benefited from a beefed up fundraising effort "by collecting huge checks from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs."

"[McCain's] financial position has improved in the last month. The RNC's cash on hand has risen. So now we face a position where McCain and the RNC have $96 million in the bank," Plouffe said in a Web video posted on the campaign's Web site.

Election Center: How the candidates matchup on fundraising

"They are using the RNC money, and they are using the McCain money they were able to raise while we were engaged in the primary to really spend a lot of money out there," he added.

"We have to make sure we are matching that. The only way we cand do that is for you all to continue to help us. We can't count on anybody else. We can't wait for a cavalry out there. The cavalry doesn't exist."

As of the end of May, Obama's campaign reported approximately $43 million cash on hand, of which roughly $10 million were general election funds. The campaign has yet to release its second quarter financial information.

The Democratic National Committee is expected to be of little help to the Obama campaign. On the heels of a strategy imposed by DNC chairman Howard Dean that seeks to beef up organization in all 50 states, the committee finds itself with virtually no money in the bank. As of the end of May, the DNC reported only $4 million cash on hand, $50 million less than the RNC had during the same time period.

Go ahead and join me in donating to Obama's campaign without fear of the money going to Hillary's debt. It is illegal for campaign donations to be shuffled to another candidate. Even if Obama wanted to pay off all her debt he can't. All he can do is fund raise with her to help get more contributors to her campaign.

Then again when people like Romney put their own money into their campaign how is it Clinton can't afford to spare a little of her 109 million to pay off the debt she ran up even after it was obvious she couldn't win.

Lastly keep the "circumvented democracy" comments for the carebears. A short definition of democracy – most votes wins, plain and simple. Even if you disregard the FL and MI penalties that Clinton signed and agreement on and award the votes as they stood she looses. Get over the hate, stop pouting, and grow up.

....yes he does take money from pacs and lobbiests. Maybe not the name of them but from the wifes and individuals.
Trying to buy the election? He gets enough free media attention.
When it gets to the voting booth, my non contribution is as valuable as a 2300 dollar one. Yep, the price of air fuel has gone up.
Keep sending your money fools and wonder what you will get in return. Must surely be in a rush to have your taxes raised, higher prices and lost jobs. Or maybe you are just wanting for the intangibles called HOPE and CHange.

McCain is going to spend a lot of his lobbyist money to buy this election...America has to stop his madness. John McCain has one interest and it is his own. this "hero" sold out America while he was a POW, this "veteran" sold out his crew aboard the USS Forrestal July 29, 1967, this "moral" husband and father sold out his first wife and 3 kids for the money of a woman young enough to be his child, this "experienced" politician sold out our VETS, this "proud" American sold out the MLK Holiday, John McCain can sell out America because he is bought and payed for by big oil and big business...John McCain, the buck STOPS here!

It becoming more and more clear that this country is slowly slipping back to its old ways. Now the republicans are using fear, religion, and race to paint and negative image of Obama.

And you idiots still whinning about Hillary need to GROW UP. Voting republiican and not supporting the DNC is the same as slapping her in the face. If your willing to help the republicans kill more americans and willing to pay $10 a gallon for gas just cause Hillary didnt win then you vote should be taken away and you should be shipped to Iraq

To all the Ohio for McCain Democrats....sooooo what. If you think that Hillary has been deprived of the nomination because of Obama then you are too special to vote for a Democrat anyway. Every four years a special group of voters across this nation vote against their own interest to prove a point. Exactly what point they are making is another matter but every time these indignant voters get their unemployment checks, gas or buy food I am sure they don’t complain because they have what they voted for.
Only a bunch of nuts would think that Hillary loosing was anyone’s fault but her own..ooops, I suppose that would make her a nut too. A poorly run campaign and you know it was but for some reason she should have been given the nomination anyway; a handout. Well this should be a newsflash for you but if you took the number one segment in our society that has received the most unearned handouts from America and put them in one location they would all look like Hillary and you, not Obama. You may live in a big state (of denial) but you guys have a very small mind.

    Go Obama!!!

Yeah, Plouffe, I'm sure Obama's campaign fundraising is completely clean and without blemish. Why don't you go one step further and say that McCain actually has a check sent in by Satan as well? The Democrats are MASTERS of hypocrisy.

    Poor, poor babies!

I guess his handlers didn't think this one through before having him refuse public campaign financing. They need to stop posing him and Michelle as the new John and Jackie Kennedy because they are not and never will be. Then maybe, just maybe, they will have enough money available to run his campaign through November.

Could someone explain to me why Hillary Clinton's 18 million supporters, (that she consistently boasts of ), would not donate at least $1.00 each to help her retire her debt ? They are supposed to love her so much but would not help her, but according to their blogs they expect Obama's supporters to do so? Wake up please !!!
What kind of supporters are these Hillary fans??? Pay up or shut up Hillary fans !!!
Help me understand this please !!!!!!!

And this is why McCain wanted Obama to take the fixed financing. They planned all a long to play the system. Thank god Obama was smart enough to see that.

Also, to the few HRC fanatics out there. Again, the DNC didn't break any rules. The DNC is controlled by Hillary supporters. The popular vote was basically split, and had the super delegates went against the popular vote and pledged delegate count to put HRC as the candidate, the other 18+ million voters would have been upset. Neither side can win unless we all stop acting like 4 year olds.

Stop your whining, or register as a republican, because you aren't acting like a democrat and you know it.

Obama will raise more than necessary ......and after his awesome speech on Aug 28th in a stadium of 77,000 plus, August will wind up being his best month ever, eclipsing even Feb.
Where's McCain's speech gonna be held? A Masonic Lodge?

Now that Obama has changed his position on many issues he might get their votes but many donars will not send him anymore money, and many Hillary supporters will not send him money until his supporters help retire her dept.

Jeff please learn to spell BEFORE you make threats. Guess what: I AM NOT going to retire her debt either or as you say her dept and if you want to keep your vote or give it to JM do so. I can't wait for John and Cindy to feel your pain at the gas pumps and in the unemployment lines or better yet while they are dining on steak you can enjoy lentil soup. Also, just to show you are really in John's corner, please go and enlist in the military that way you can REALLY show your support. Not only will your vote not be missed but you won't be around for it.

People are hurting out there. We hear people trying to make a choice between gas and food. He was VERY STUPID for not taking public finance. He better start impressing Hillary supporters and tell us what his solutions are. Stop being an arrogant person BHO

Obama never had the support or strength that the media pretended he had.

With the often reported tens of thousands flocking to his speeches and rallies... how come it did not translate into actual votes? He and Hill were basically tied. Hillary was ahead if you counted all the votes cast.

Obama intentionally created the illusion of strength: tiny caucus wins presented as if the same number of voters were represented as are represented in a primary win, Fl and MI did not get counted, strong-arming at caucus prevented HRC voters from casting a vote for her, the media hype, the myth of how HRC was hated... etc

All those things made it seem as if Obama was soaring. NOT SO. Hillary is loved, not hated. She is not a warmonger like Obama cast her, she is NOT a racist. All those sneaky, manipulative hateful, divisive ploys used by Obama have BACKFIRED.

I agree with some previous posters. I have donated to Obama 3 times, but I won't do so again until I am certain that my money will not go to Clinton to pay her bills. She and Bill made enough money sending US jobs overseas – she can pay her own bills. Thank you very much.

Well, what happened to the Obama money machine? I think I know what happened. He raised all they money he can by making false promise to the left. Basically the left was funding him to beat Hillary, their enemy no 1.
Now that he backed off from his position on Iraq and FISA. Wallet from the left is drying up. You cannot count much on ignorant drunk college kids (not all of them but most of them) who hardly read one book a year and get influenced by empty speeches. The centrists and moderates are not a big fan of Mr. Obama anyway. He is moving to the center but it's too late and if he does the republicans are going to paint him as flip flop.

Do I need to say more. Democrats found a way to loose the white house again by nominating the weakest candidate from the left.

Why didn't the democrats nominate someone like Joe Biden or Evan Bayh, if not Hillary Clinton?

(Mike Duckakis, John Kerry, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, Barack Obama, kind of people are sure to lose.)
