[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/POLITICS/07/16/obama.speech/art.obama2.ap.jpg caption=" Sen. Barack Obama joins in a roundtable discussion on national security Wednesday at Purdue University."]WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday said he wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons and pledged to fight emerging threats posed by biological and cyber-terrorism.

"It's time to send a clear message to the world: America seeks a world with no nuclear weapons," the White House hopeful said.

"As long as nuclear weapons exist, we'll retain a strong deterrent. But we'll make the goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons a central element in our nuclear policy."

The remarks, delivered at Purdue University in Indiana before a roundtable discussion with foreign policy experts, come as the senator from Illinois is preparing for a trip abroad. Obama also is seeking to gain traction on national security issues.

Brandon Hillary PUMA – this is a man who has suggested meeting with foreign dictators. Both Hillary and Mc Cain opposed that.
Then he must be right. The only difference between Hillary and Nixon is that she wears pantsuits and he just wore a suit. I can't wait to see the outcome of her fraud trial in California that was conveniently postponed until after the election by a judge appointed by Bubba. Google – Peter Paul vs. Hillary Clinton.

I am voting for him, but I do disagree with him on this issue. I think nuclear weopons can be used to destroy an asteroid before it hits Earth.

Will Michelle be answering that phone at 3am lol heaven help us if that ever happens…..

LMAO I love it, the repubs have no comeback, no counter point, and no ideas. The only thing they can do are personal attacks to take focus away from the fact that they don't have any real ideas. Michelle probably won't be answering it but then again neither will Bill!!

Obama's attempts at foreign policy are like Hulk Hogan attempting ballet. There's a difference between being a visionary and having hallucinations. Are we sure Obama's not back on coke again? Let's see, if he eliminates nukes on Wednesday, then he can cure cancer on Thursday, end the war Friday, and build an electric car over the weekend.

M.S. Indiana, the nuclear talks with North Korea have been going on long before Obama got to the Senate. The EU has been talking to Iran for years, and Isreal talks one day and bombs the next. If you think Obama has had anything to do with any of this, you are as delusional as he is.

What planet does this guy live on??? We (the U.S.) are the ones who introduced the world to nuclear weapons and there is not a snowball's chance in hell that we are going to get rid of them.

Thank God, we have a presidential elect who see's the relationship of oil and national security. We need to depend on the sun and wind. This is the future and it scares OPEC. I wouldn't be suprized if OPEC paid off american car makers to not produce electric cars.

Ever since 9/11, this country has taken on the mentality of a schoolyard bully. Our nation has become an insecure one – scared of anyone and anything that threatens to reveal our deficiencies. Keeping other nations in fear is not the way to peace – it only brings about more resentful, hate-filled attitudes. Obama at least has the right notion in mind – stop the bullying...far-fetched as it may be.

So...some of you have a problem with a nuclear-free world?? Nothing worthwhile has ever been achieved that hasn't been dreamed of and worked for.

Sen. Obama will not rid the world of nuclear weapons by waving a magic wand or through wishful thinking. He inspires and motivates people toward action. A very few PEOPLE actually have nuclear weapons...certainly not the people of China, Pakistan, India, etc. They will give them up...will their leaders?

We began this awful march toward destruction...we have a responsibility to curb it. What has been done cannot be undone. The decision lies in what we will do today. Reflect on that on August 6th.

The more we sweat for Peace, the less we bleed in war. Get to Work!

Nuclear Deterrent works best when only you have nukes but if your biggest enemies acquire nukes as well, there goes your one biggest edge.
Now we all know that the US military is second to none in the world. But what stops the US military from marching into china or Russia is the fact that they have nukes, otherwise, imagine a world without nuclear weapons for the United States. What challenge is Russia with their aging weapons without Nuclear weapons against the US military who doesn't need nuclear bombs to deter any enemy(except brainless terrorists who do not mind getting on the endangered species list)
Besides, we want to avoid a world in which as we continue to advance in technology, eventually, nuclear technology will advance to a civilian level paving the way for extremists groups to experiment their wildest ideas.

You can't put nuclear weapons "back in the bottle", no, but there's no rational reason why any nation would need enough of them to destroy the world a few times over. I think the US could get by by limiting themselves to 20. That's just for starters.

One thing Obama could not lie about and didn't make his promise to the American people was picking Hillary for his running mate. Obama did not have the luxury to say the word like “consider” picking her for his running mate. I can’t read Obama’s mind but we know his main donors are obviously anti-Clintons and they are his base. (Those anti-Clintons may need to “just get over it” and love her and see how easy it is to fall in love or in line – a satire.)

Anyway Obama’s stance on VP pick is one thing we know he won't and can't change.

It’s so much easier for him to say “let’s get rid of nukes” than “I will consider Clinton for my running mate” – we too think it's not a good idea.

If the world cannot even get rid landmines and cluster bombs, what makes Obama think that he can get rid of nuclear weapons? It's extremely naive for Obama to think that he can persuade other nuclear powers to get rid of their nukes or for others like Syria and Iran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons. What Obama is proposing sounds more like a pledge to unilaterally disarm the US. Obama has no experience and it shows clearly.

Billy Vehmann- How does this make us more vunerable...

you do realize if others had nukes and we didn't it does not make us more vunerable, its real simple really..

lets take hypothetical... we have nukes, others do to, they fire theirs, we fire ours... Result... World is over in a flash

Second, we don't have nukes, they do, they fire theirs, Result...

World is Over due to radiation.......

See the results are the same in both cases....the world ends...

Now last, we don't have nukes, and neither do they...

no one can push a button, the world can't end unless we kill it off, and we all get to live a long existance, (if we take care of ourselves health wise)..

I like Theory #3...much better than the first two...

This post is proof that Obama does not have the experience to do the job. How naive is he? What are we going to do Obama? Are we going to point a nuclear weapon at other countries and tell them to rid themselves of theirs? To everyone out there that really think that this is even logical, good luck on your wishfull thinking.

This comment is proof that Obama can give a speech but he doesn't live in reality. He should have proof read his speech and then consulted with somebody that views life in reality.

We might as well declare a nuclear war right now. LOL! This is laughable.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This speech was awe-inpsiring. He is so very presidential. And so very right....we are fighting the "old war," the war that WAS, and in a sense, the war that never was, since Iraq was the not the country that bombed us on 9/11, rather than focusing on what could happen in the here and now. We need to identify the enemy NOW and get things in hand before Bush lets them get any more out of control.
