[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/POLITICS/07/16/obama.speech/art.obama2.ap.jpg caption=" Sen. Barack Obama joins in a roundtable discussion on national security Wednesday at Purdue University."]WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday said he wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons and pledged to fight emerging threats posed by biological and cyber-terrorism.

"It's time to send a clear message to the world: America seeks a world with no nuclear weapons," the White House hopeful said.

"As long as nuclear weapons exist, we'll retain a strong deterrent. But we'll make the goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons a central element in our nuclear policy."

The remarks, delivered at Purdue University in Indiana before a roundtable discussion with foreign policy experts, come as the senator from Illinois is preparing for a trip abroad. Obama also is seeking to gain traction on national security issues.

I trust Barack Obama to contain nuclear weapons more than I do John McCain. We don't need more of Bush's tatics ( mcBush ). We are already paying too high a price. You know the first time John McCain opens his mouth he is going to infuriate our enemies even more.

That is an admirable, realistic and totally achievable goal for the President of the US during his 4-year term; to travel the world and get all the countries to turn their nuclear weapons in, but to do so in a non-mperialistic or didactic manner. And, of course, prevent anyone such as a terrorist or rogue nation from developing or building new ones, but also do this in a non-bossy or friendly manner. Yes, indeed.

Isn't it worth it to at least try to get nations to agree to limit their nukes? Would it hurt anything or anybody?

How about instead of bashing Obama, do something constructive and maybe give us your opinion you think we should do. You do have your own ideas don't you?

Hey FEDUP, why don't you wise up?

    1. Obama didn't suggest unilateral disarmament. He suggested a world-wide initiative among all the nuclear powers.

    2. As for Pearl Harbor, we had a far larger military than Japan and they attacked us anyway.

    3. And as for carrying a big stick, in a world without nuclear weapons, the advantage would shift to the nation with the largest conventional forces. Who do you think that is, dimwit?

This goes to show how inexperienced and nieve he is. With all the power hungry nut jobs out there running these radical countries that make Russia look like a real friend. I guess he does not realize we have been trying to do that for 60 yrs. Makes for another nice pipe dream. This young guy has to stop all his yelling "Change" and take a realistic good long look at what this world is really all about. Some of these places like killing each other. They have been doing in for many hundreds of yrs any way they can. It is called "POWER AND CONTROL!!!

jimmy velman: what do you think about the statistic that the U.S. has enough nuclear and chemical/biological weapons to kill everything on our planet 11-12 times?

While he's at it, Mr. Obama can also put an end to natural disasters, epidemics, famine, bad weather, mean people, and stuff. And all in a non-threatening and friendly way! I mean, gee whiz, why not?

Sounds great. Is Obama going to look into Putin's eyes and, hypnotize him? Send Jimmy Carter to North Korea? Hide the Chinese nukes in his mu shu pork? Oh, I get it, Obama is going to trust the Russions, Chinese and North Koreans. How is he going to get Pakistan and India to give up nukes? This is just a sound bite for his trolls.

McCain has the same policy but he wants to rid the world of nuclear arms by detonating them around the world. Then he has accomplished two campaign goals: war for another 100 years while singing bomb-bomb-bomb...bomb-bomb Iran, and the other accomplishment is to claim he has done his part to rid the world of nuclear weapons. Let's hope he brushes up on 20th Century World History and Geography (poor soul didn't know the Czech Republic is no more).

"It's time to send a clear message to the world: America seeks a world with no nuclear weapons," the White House hopeful said.

Duh, Obama - YOU are the FIRST one to state that? This is just another hilarious "Obama moment" - restating the obvious and then trying to make it sound uniquely "his own"!

This joker used to make me angry - now he just makes me laugh.

As I tell the children, if you don't set a goal nothing at all will be attained. Because this goal is "Naive" we are to just let things go on the way they are? Please note, Obama has not said that he is going to get rid of all ours and leave us undefended. He said a non-nuclear world should be a goal that we should all work towards. To disagree with that type of a goal is foolish.

    To "A Visionary!!!",

Actually, it would be a benefit to this country if you and all your Socialist friends would stay home or vote on Wednesday this year. You and your friends are the ones who aren't paying attention. You and your friends are the ones who aren't thinking critically. I am well aware of what this country needs and it is *NOT* Socialism!

Redistribution of wealth, penalizing success, handouts to those who don't care enough about their own lives to get a job, and free socialized healthcare are all "principles" and "values" that America can do just fine without!

Here's a little tip: there are plenty of Socialist countries around the world. If that is what you want from your country, leave. Socialism will kill the American Dream and everything America stands for!!

The world has waited long enough for the U.S. to lead and not threaten war and fear. Obama is right and he is the right choice for leadership.

Nothing wrong with wanting to ban weapons that could wipe out you and everything you know that exists. Anyone that wants more nukes is mentally inept. Who needs nukes anyway when we have Republicans running the country. I think they've met and over indulged the kill quota.
