McCain calls Obama health care plan 'HillaryCare'

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (CNN) - John McCain devoted a substantial chunk of his town hall meeting Thursday to drawing contrasts with Barack Obama on health care policy, stressing his opposition to the presumptive Democratic nominee's health care plan and noting the "great difference" between them on abortion.

McCain's strongest denunciation of Obama came when discussing the Democrat's health care plan, which would cost $50-65 billion per year but would not mandate insurance coverage for all adults, only children.

"My friends, we've seen this movie before," McCain said. "It was called 'HillaryCare' back in 1993, and we're not going to do it again. We're not going to have the government take over the health care system in America."

At a later moment in the town hall, when stressing his own bipartisan record, McCain accused Obama of generally having "the most extreme record of any member of the United States Senate."

McCain also went out of his way early in the event to trumpet his opposition to abortion rights and a called partial-birth abortion a "hideous procedure that should never be allowed anywhere on earth." He promised "active advocacy for the rights of the unborn."

McCain struck a more moderate tone when taking a question about federal funding for stem cell research, which he supports. The Arizona senator argued the government should fund research on stem cells - especially skin cells - because of their "incredible potential" to combat diseases. However, the presumptive Republican nominee avoided using the term "embryonic" when discussing the matter Thursday.

OK ,PUMA, Together 4 US, and all you other traitors to Democratic Party ideals, swallow that one from McCain. Why can't you just accept that Hillary came close, but just no cigar?

Hey PUMA puppies, I guess you can strike McCain off your list too. That leaves Barr or Nader. The guy just made fun of Obama's plan by making fun of Hillary's nearest and dearest goal of universal healthcare. If you love Hillary so much then why in the world would you vote for someone that just basically took a shot at her?

The war and president Bush have already bankrupt this country. I was considering McCain but he is very wrong on this issue. If we can afford a multicountry occupation, we could pay for care for a sick child.

  4. Pumas aren't Democrats, So Stop Using OUR Good Name

I am still laughing about this one! I would LOVE to see the face of someone seriously considering him over Obama because they "support Clinton". Seems like you guys are always losing, huh? Maybe its why you're so bitter and cling to things (like the primary season). You can't vote for who you want, and the person you are voting for out of spite, says derrogatory things about the person you claim to support. Interesting. Now I'm sure I'll come back later and read some ignorant posts about "Clinton/PUMA people" who are going to say something that has nothing to do with the article, but mocks Obama. Have fun being thrown under the Straight Crap Express. The rest of us are moving on to the White House.

I believe it is now obvious reading these comments that there are more Obama supporters that have nothing better to do than bash everything and everyone else. I swear every story on this news site has comments that follow it, and non are Republican based. Maybe thats because us hard working Republicans dont cheat our employers by surfing the net and basing Obama all day.

This man is the last person on earth who should dare make any critizisms of universal health care. HE HAS HAD THE EQUIVILENT OF UNIVERSAL CARE ALL OF HIS LIFE. Born into a military family, navy career, VA care, and now Senate care.
COME ON!!! Is he saying he's had lousy care all of his life from the government?

Whenever any one wants to show off a knowledge of Obama's proposals for his administration, please be my guest. I imagine you will have difficulty since the fine Senator has altered his previous positions to get elected by voters who are in the middle of the spectrum and not on the far left/right. Each comment is so unoriginal and is exactly what the media spins out, for you only to regurgitate mindlessly. I guess one would expect such a result on a CNN blog, but even the ones that seem to be more intelligent have foolish spelling/grammatical errors. Do a service to yourself and stop wasting time on a blog that has no impact at all on the election and open a book, preferably one that will tell you that sympathizers is spelled with a z. End of Lecture.

The YouTube video of the women writhing on the floor in New York that everyone has seen is a good preview of Obama's healthcare plan. King's County Hospital a public hospital run by the city of New York.

    Socialized medicine does not work.
This would be a relevant comment if Obama's plan involved nationalizing our health care system. It doesn't. Your screen name says it all. The facts are not important to you, just your dislike of Obama. You have six months to learn how to say his first name...... President!

What is McCain promising to do to improve our very broken health care system? Anything?

Nothing more than Universal Health Care wrapped up in a different colored package..

  15. Vote Nader

"Universal" Healthcare is one of the few issues I don't agree with Mr. Nader on. The healthcare system sucks, but giving control to the government is a bad idea. The government subsidizing part of the cost, maybe.

And Brian from Sugar Land... Why do you need the government's helps taking care of yourself and your family? What"s wrong with doing it yourself? You shouldn't have had that 11 year-old if you can't.

For Michelle Obams to be a wife and a mother, she should know that all American need health insurance.

I'm well aware that her and her rich friends and supporters have excellent benefits but it's not about her and her friends it's about American people.

So Michelle if you knew how to handle your household you should tell that stuck up Husband of yours everyone needs medical insurance.

Hey McSame – 68% of Americans support universal healthcare. So good luck with that in November.

And Ben – our government pays many times MORE per person for healthcare than countries with universal, single payer healthcare (they also live longer, healthier lives) but don't let facts and common sense get in the way of your anachronistic and backwards hysteria about universal healthcare, mmmkay?

Think about it. MCCain's claim of spending $50-60 billion dollars a year for health care is NOT good, how come we can spend $12 billion dollars a month in Iraq? If we get out soon we could save those money and have plenty of dough left over for the school, road and bridges repairs to go around. His logic is suspect to me.

Why are so many people so-anti government. The government has a major role to play in the health care system. Medicare and Medicaid work fine, why not expand these. The governemt was instrumental in the electrification, highways and railroads for this country.
