Obama begins overseas swing in Afghanistan

Sen. Barack Obama will visit several world leaders over the next few weeks.

Sen. Barack Obama will visit several world leaders over the next few weeks.

(CNN) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is in Afghanistan on a multistop overseas trip for meetings with international leaders but with an eye on the U.S. presidential race back home.

Obama's trip, which includes visits to Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, is intended to bolster his foreign policy credentials before U.S. voters.

"This is the campaign trail via satellite - pictures for the rhetoric back home," CNN's Candy Crowley said, adding that the trip was intended to demonstrate that Obama was up to the job of taking a lead role on the international stage.

"The question is, is he tough enough to stand up for America but graceful enough to improve [its] image?" Crowley said.

In a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, 48 percent of registered voters said Obama would make a good commander in chief, compared with 72 percent for his Republican rival, John McCain.

  1. Matt: honestly

Question....How do you know if he is phony? You have not even given him the chance. How do you know that the REAL Barack isn't what you see?

do you have any source for that, Lisa? Or is that more 'psyhic' feeling u have about so manythings? We will have to see how Obama does as the week goes forth. GOod luck to him and be safe.

McCain is a good man, but his policies are all over the place, inconsistent and hypocritical.

  3. Texans for Obama

Obama has good judgement! Obama is the most intelligent. Read the article in Time magazine. McCain was a terrible student, and a heavy drinker in college. I don't want another stupid man to become the President. Too much is a stake. No more " D" students". We had one already Bush! The article said he was a terrible student too!. Well, we have a terrible economy now! Babrack the most intelligent person for the job of President. Barack the vote!

I don't really like Obama. I feel like it's all about him instead of it being about how he is going to help the American people. It's a popularity contest whitch he loves. He tells us he is this great guy why is he hanging around biggets. But in the end I will vote for him. Sad to vote for someone I don't like or trust.

  6. Make Us Proud!

Let the McCain campaign and the current administration say what they will about this trip (careful what you wish for, McCain... it didn't really work out how you planned, now, did it?), I know Senator Obama will make us proud.

Like Michelle Obama, the Obama campaign – its direction and goals and means of getting there – make me proud to be an American and a supporter of Barack Obama.

Gosh that feels good. It's been a really, really long time since I've been proud of an American politician.

    The next POTUS: Barack Obama!

  8. no McCain!

Go Obama, show the world us Americans actually DO care about others and we don't feel superior to them!

We should be in Afghanistan, where the terrorists have been all along, not in Iraq, the terrorists came AFTER we invaded.

Yea Obama has good judgement alright. He spends 20 years in that hate filled church and never said a word. Anybody that takes their children to teach them to hate too, isn't worth the time of day let alone being president. I hope they keep him over there. He needs to take his mean hateful wife with him. Maybe they will keep her too. I doubt it nobody wants her.

ABC,NBC, and CBS should be taken off the air for backing a candidate. Obama probably gets to read the questions first they are going to ask him. What a sham!

Great job Obama. McCain criticizes him for not going...now he complains when he does. Make up your mind and quit being a hyprocrite.

Obama brings fresh new vision, leadership and ideas...will be the perfect breath of fresh air the USA needs to repair our negative perception all across the world. You can tell from the photos he is uplifting the spirits of the troops and is 100 times more committed to winning the REAL war which is Afganistan, NOT Iraq.

  18. 120%

120% of voters - something wrong with the poll me thinks.

The Commander in Chief of the Military is a Civilian for a Reason.

The Founders didn't want a miitary man in charge of the military–Military men weren't trusted with this responsibility by the Framers and Founders of this Great Country–Civilian leadership is to protect and defend America

  19. not important

McCain is the one who wants to continue the Iraq war and kick Russia out of G8. Obama undestands that it is important to focus on Afghanistan. Obama understands that the USA needs to make allies and not enemies in the world.

THE IRAQIS WANT US OUT OF THEIR COUNTRY!!!! Thats all that matters.

This Marxist Candidate is perfect for Europe., But not for the U S of A.

Enjoy the free ride Obama, it will end at Denver. The Democratic Party wants to win in November and they know that only Hillary or another
Mainstream Democrat has that chance. Then again what do I know ,I predicted that Nixon would lose to McGovern and look how that turned out. The mainstream candidate vs. the flower children and peaceniks and Nixon won hands down.

what are you thinking? said it best: "safe trip Mr. President….a new and better face of America the world will get to see." Gee I forgot what it felt like to have a representative of the United States travel abroad and not be the laughing stock of the planet. I travel extensively: the middle east, Europe, Russia, and China and it is awkward to have people ask me why we elected this doofus. "He was selected, not elected and I didn't vote for him either time." Yes, what are you thinking? you are 100% right: a better face of America.

To the Idiot that took a slam at the Guns in the West. Let me make it perfectly clear...IT IS THOSE GUNS IN OUR HOMES THAT WILL KEEP AMERICA FREE ONCE THE SOCIALIST/MARXISTS TAKE OVER.

Why do you think that the first action of a Socialist Government is to take the weapons away from law abiding citizens. Just ask the Cubans and Chileans.
You will take my guns when you pry them from my cold dead hands.
