JERUSALEM (CNN) - The rabbi who supervises Jerusalem's Western Wall condemned the removal of a prayer note purportedly written by Sen. Barack Obama, saying the action was "sacrilegious."

The U.S. presidential candidate visited the holy site early Thursday and placed a note in the cracks of the wall - a custom of visitors.

It was subsequently removed from the wall, according to the Israeli newspaper, Ma'ariv, which printed what it said were the contents of the note.

Ma'ariv said a seminary student gave the note to the paper.

Obama's senior strategist Robert Gibbs told CNN, "We haven't confirmed nor denied" that the note is from the Illinois senator.

"This sacrilegious action deserves sharp condemnation and represents a desecration of the holy site," said Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who supervises the Western Wall, in a statement.

This is a political stunt to try to convince people he has Christian faith. It won't work BHO.

Kinda shows the right-wing fanatics that he's not a follower of Islam!

Separation of Church-and-state? No chance! Religion is constantly politicized which is totally wrong!

As a Principlist Believer, we directly address our prayer to Life Principle without using any kind of human channel. We all know that manmade has its limits. Thus the Western Wall, as manmade thing, demonstrates its limits. In a word, as Principlist Believer our Authority is only God, The Life Principle we trust and we directly speak to Him.

I do not understand why CNN has chosen to publish this deeply personal prayer on the web site. CNN Anchors on television boast that they will not show it in that medium when the website prominently shows it here.

Half way around the world in one of the most holy places on earth where you would hope your most private thoughts would be between you and your maker was betrayed by one individual and all the news medias that have reported on it's contents. Shame on all of you. Why not report on Mccains statement about going seismic on Obamas decision not to visit our wounded troops in Germany? Here is man running for president going seismic? I was part of the Veitnam era I got over it a long time ago.Mccain is obsessed with war . When you get angry you say things you really don't mean just to try and hurt that persons feelings. This man is a time bomb who should not be trusted to be elected as the leader of our great nation.

I thought Muslins referred to God as Allah not Lord ....oh that's right, they don't ... guess that puts to bed the rumor that he is not a Christian.

Heaven forbid that CNN should read them or use them in any way...which you guys did; just to make a buck or two.

No other main stream media published the Obama Western Wall prayer; I hope you all in CNN pay the price for this sacrilegious sin!!!

This sounds like another attempt by the Obama camp to portray him as a victim. It's not like that was a real prayer – it is probably the most generic prayer ever placed in that holy wall. And I think it was removed and given to the paper by someone in the Obama camp.

    Non-story, let's move along please.

I just wonder in fair play if the anti-defamation league will come down on the Israel. Or make a a request that the student be kicked out of reglious studies. This is a personal violation of what we all considered scared.

    "sacrilegious?" LOL

"Notes which are placed in the Western Wall are between the person and his Maker?"
Shouldn't he have given the note to his mommy and daddy then.

Now that's a prayer that the so-call "Christian" right should be critical of. Here, you have a man not full of himself, but humble enough to ask God's guidance. But, I'm sure Dr. James Dobson can find some reason to tell his followers not to support Obama. Maybe they should be suspicious of his penmanship!! By the way, I wonder how McCain prays...
Oh yeah, its never been seen.

    Obama 08 and forever!

On CNN's Reliable Sources this morning, the host of the show admonishes the Israeli paper for publishing Obama's prayer. At the same time, he showed the written prayer on air and CNN posts the prayer on the website. CNN, you are disgusting.
