(CNN) - In a sign Barack Obama may be moving closer to selecting a running mate, the Democratic presidential candidate was spotted Monday heading into the Washington office building of his top VP vetter, Eric Holder

Following a roundtable with some of his top economic advisors, Obama headed to the downtown Washington law offices of Covington and Burling, where Holder is a partner. He declined to answer any questions on his way in.

CNN Political Market: Who will Obama choose?

Holder, along with Caroline Kennedy, is principally in charge of steering the Illinois senator's search for a No. 2. Longtime Washington insider Jim Johnson had also been leading the search but stepped down last month amid questions over favorable loans from Countrywide Financial.

Caroline Kennedy is also reportedly in Washington Monday for a Democratic National Committee fundraising event.

Obama's campaign wouldn't comment on the meeting, though he's expected to spend nearly two hours there before heading to a fundraiser in Arlington. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, as well as senior advisers David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs, are also traveling with Obama Monday, though it is unclear if they are attending the meeting.

Speaking with NBC Sunday, Obama wouldn't say how close he is to selecting his running mate, but said it would happen "soon enough."

“I'm going to want somebody with integrity. I'm going to want somebody with independence, who's willing to tell me where he thinks or she thinks I'm wrong, and I'm - I'm going to want somebody who shares a vision of the country where we need to go, that we've got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington,” he said.

UPDATE: Obama left Holder's office building shortly before 7 p.m. ET, almost three hours after he went in. He declined to answer any questions on who he met with.

We should know who his VP choice is long before the convention, as well as his cabinet choices. Those are the real people who will make the decisions. The President is merely a figure head these days. I hope Obama chooses wisely.. Someone like Hagel would force McCains hand to maybe reach to Hillary..

At least Obama can remember where The Czech Republic is, McCain refers to it as Czechoslovakia..

Also McCain refers to Iraq and Pakistan sharing a border... His comments from July 21, 2008... He [McCain] warned of a “very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border.”

With all the problems that the Bushies have left during the last eight years, Obama will need all the "know-how" that he can gather. I hope that he will make it easier for me to vote for him by choosing someone who has been there before and can warn him about the pitfalls ahead-like Hillary Clinton.

Obama has great judgement, and I'm fine with anyone he picks.

I hope he picks Kathleen Sebelius!

Joe Biden for Secretary of State!
Bill Richards for Secretary of Energy!
Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense!
    John Edwards for Supreme Court!

When in the long course of human events has an election for president ever been decided by whom was selected for his vice president?
People do not vote for a vice president! I could be selected for running mate and who in the world would give a hoot?
I like CNN, but sometimes I think you guys(and gals) really reach far out for any thing that although not news, it grabs attention.

Lets pick our VP already, I'm tired of waiting and the speculating. I'm pretty sure the right wingers already got their VP choice but they are going to be hush hush about it till we pick ours. I don't care who our VP is. My short list is:

    Clinton
    Edwards
    Hagel

Obama needs an attack dog to go after the republican slime machine, epitomized by that nut in Tennessee. You know, the one who had o'reily, hannity and michale weiner's books in his house. A true g.o.p. poster child.

I love the last paragraph of this article, outlining the qualitys of the candidate he wants for his VP. It is sad to have to admit that none of these qualitys are on a parallel with Hillary Rodham Clintons qualifications; therefore I am hoping he will not even consider asking her to run with him.

She would run alright, but he would spend the next four years dodging arrows and her errors in speech and actions if he should win the Presidency.

Hillary Clinton should go back to Arkansas where she came from, she has not accomplished anything for the State of New York where she was elected as a "carpetbag Senator"......good bye Hillary and Bill.....the country has had enough of Arkansas politics!

I remember the last time a man ran for President as a Washington "outsider," one who would change the way things in government were done. His name was Jimmy Carter.
