[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.stevens.gi.jpg caption="Stevens is facing a federal indictment."](CNN) - Sen. Ted Stevens is expected to be indicted this afternoon by a federal grand jury, CNN has learned. A government source and a source familiar with the investigation would not tell CNN what charges are expected to be filed against the Alaska Republican.
Stevens has been the subject of a wide-ranging federal investigation focusing on Alaska state lawmakers and an Energy company in the state.
Steven's Alaska home was searched last July.
Watch: Stevens' home gets raided
FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched Stevens' Alaska home in July 2007 in connection with the probe, which has already snared two oil-company executives and a state lobbyist. At the time, he urged constituents "not to form conclusions based upon incomplete and sometimes incorrect reports in the media."
The 84-year-old senator is a former chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and is renowned for his prowess in steering federal funds to his vast, sparsely populated state. He has represented Alaska in Washington since 1968 and is up for re-election in November.
Both parties are corrupt . . . but the Republicans are MORE corrupt. It's a natural result of Republican ideology. "Deregulation" is just another word for taking cops off the beat, so crooks can run wild. This time the crooks are old white guys with expensive suits, who fleece the rest of us and call it "Christian values."
Alaskans, you should vote your entire shameful Republican delegation out of office as soon as the opportunity arises. This year, get rid of Ted Stevens and Don Young. And don't replace them with another Republican.
A corrupt republican, im shocked, shocked I tell you!!!!
HOORAY! Another lying, cheating, arrogant, self-absorbed REPUBLICAN caught!
Can't wait for the trial and sentencing.
The Republicans and their party are sinking faster than the Titanic, and I LOVE IT!
Another corrupt criminal politician bites the dust. Good riddance and may you rot in jail for your betrayal of the people.
Obama is the only candidate that has the guts to take on the big $ lobbies and fight this type of corruption.
Whereas McCain was involved in the Keating 5 and took the most amount of $ out of the 5 from that criminal.
I find it funny that Republicans are always talking about how democrats put their party first before country, YET they are the ones being caught up putting their party first at the DOJ, now The Alaska guy stuff and McSame, who had to tow party line to get niminated.
Americans do not allow yourself to be deceived again!!
Another so called conservative republican get them all out of the white house and take G W Bush and Cheney too.
Never met a republican who didn't twist the truth until it became a lie.
Of course, his lying partner in crime will give him a presidential pardon, but if gets him out of the Senate, I can live with that.
Another crooked Republican CAUGHT!
John McCain just had a town hall meeting in NV.
It was absolutely pathetic. All this guy says is "my friends I know how to fix that" but then he gives not even the slightiest solutions to the problem he was asked about.
Wake up America! Not again, not again!
YES WE CAN!
Oh, so.... they're gung ho about bringing a nobody Senator from no where Alaska up on what appear to be tax evasion charges while those guilty of treason, promoting the unnecessary deaths of thousand and propaganda just to name a few charges, walk away scott free???? This is madness MUST stop!!! I'm with the Iowans!!!
I live in the DC area. You cannot take a dump around here without hitting a corrupt [R] politician in the head.
I can hear Steven's defense now. "I don't recall!"
Perhaps some time in a country club jail will refresh his memory, the little he has left anyway.
Uncle Ted (as I think people from Alaska call him) is finally getting nailed. The question are: what are the charges? Will the charges stick? Will the state reelect him should he run before he is convicted? If he is convicted, how quickly would Bush pardon him?
It seems that the Republicans are back to sticking to money corruption and leaving the sex stings to the Democrats. Ahh... The way things should be! Elect me and I'll be less likely to do those things!
Drill him
Hmmmm....wonder why there are no Republican's coming to this guys defense.
add one to my ever growing list of crooked republicans. how 'bout that bridge to nowhere?
Come November, the FUMIGATION of the republicans begins!
Apparently he will taking a bridge to nowhere.
I'll bet Bush/Cheney and the gang all peed their pants today. YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you people really think only the GOP are dirty??? get a clue. there are scumbags on both sides of the aisle. to think only one party is corrupt is possibly the dumbest thing ever.
I"M SURE HE WAS BACKING MCBUSH ON DRILLING IN ALASKA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BIRDS OF A SAME OLD FOLKS HOME FLOCK TOGETHER !!!!!!!
Steven's bridge to no-where now goes straight to indictment. Good to see government getting cleaner again.
A conservative Republican use his office for illicit and illegal gain? Say it ain't so!
Oh wow, another old and crooked Republican.... no surprise here folks.
The idiots in Alaska are just as culpable here for having re-elected him so many times.
Sorry Steve you kept you hand in the cookie jar far to long.
