AFL-CIO launches campaign to dispel Obama rumors

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/29/art.rumors.cnn.jpg caption="A new AFL-CIO mailer seeks to dispel continued false rumors about Obama."]

(CNN) - The nation's largest labor conglomerate says it's set to launch a major effort Tuesday to dispel ongoing rumors surrounding Barack Obama that continue to percolate more than 18 months after the Illinois senator launched his White House bid.

The organization is set to send out mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in crucial battleground states - including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - that directly address the false rumors that he is not a Christian, refuses to wear a flag pin on his lapel, and was not sworn into the Senate on the Bible.

It also beats back claims the Democratic presidential candidate was not born in America and refuses to put his hand on his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance. (view the mailer [PDF])

A majority of AFL-CIO's membership is considered part of the working-class demographic - the key voting bloc that overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton in the prolonged Democratic primary race and is likely to play a key role in the battleground states this November.

The AFL-CIO is also sending out a second mailer that features testimonials for union workers in support of Obama's policies on job creation, health care reform, and worker's rights. (View the second mailer [PDF])

"The mailers are the leading edge of a massive campaign in August to clearly define Sen. Obama among millions of union voters and to contrast the policies and plans of Sen. Obama with those of Sen. [John] McCain," AFL-CIO spokesman Steve Smith said.

That massive campaign will include a large-scale mobilization effort in 24 states, targeting 13 million union voters. The organization will also deliver more than 1 million fliers touting Obama's record at work sites across the country in August.

King Abdullah of Jordan actually cut short his vacation this week so he could meet with Obama….not grandpa Mccain and not dumb arse Bush. For him to specifically seek out Obama must be like someone who works in a nursery all week finally getting a chance to have a conversation with an adult.

PUMA girls/HRC zombie supporters/closet racists take note….Obama is the answer.

I am so glad that Obama's campaign is clarifying and not mud slinging that the RNC and McCain has been doing. He has run a remarkable campaign.

Bloggers contact your web sites and question McCain Censorship.

Why has the media not come together to stop McCain censorship regarding negative reporting about his campaign. This is indicative of what could be expected from his Presidency and news organization are bowing to his demands for no or limited negative press in exchange for access. The incident with NY times reporter was insulting, controlling, manipulative and simple wrong. This reporter wrote a factual but negative piece on McCain and since she is ignored by McCain at every press conference. This is on video tape. In one example she raises her hand to ask a question and McCain looks at her and says does anyone else have a question. That's when every reporter present should have walked away as a show of unity and freedom of the press. Yet, the media as a group did absolutely nothing. You have all behaved as cowards lacking the backbone to stand up to McCain and his campaign and say NO we will not be silenced. If you were all to stand together and he refused you access the only media that would attend his press conferences would be Fox news and who of credit watches Fox news.

McCain has promised to run a clean campaign – read between the lines – only his campaign is to be clean, clean of any negative press.

The fact that this is even necessary goes a long way toward explaining two terms for Dubya and the McCain phenomenon.

If there is anything that should scare away voter's with even a little common sense from Obama it is endorsement and financial support by this organization!!!

Heaven forbid that the answer to America's economic woes is a return to 35% taxes and socialism.

Yes, I can't tell you how many people continue to believe the lies... We need to educate the public about who he is and what he stands for!

    July 29, 2008 02:24 pm at 2:24 pm |

This is awesome, and unfortunately, totally necessary. It is shocking to think that people still believe even a single one of these rumors.

  20. McCain Lies!

Thanks AFL-CIO!! it's much appreciated because we know how those evil repuglicans will lie, cheat and steal (literally) to have their puppet (mcsurge) win this thing. The lies they have told on Obama are criminal and they are supposed to be the moral majority. What a sham and to think people actually buy into their false rhetoric.

What a shame. I still get these despicable attack lies in my E Mail. I am a Republican who is ashamed of the dirty campaign we are running. This is not the same Republican Party that I joined years ago.

  23. Concerned in Alabama

That is awesome that the organization is doing that on Barack's behalf. It will help a great deal but there are still those pocket of people who want to believe the rumors knowing they are not true to cover up their real feelings why they won't vote for Obama. It's a sad commentary but we still live in a divided world.

    Only in America.

How wonderful it is that other countries are willing to accept Obama and not his own country.

Shame on us America...Other countries are watching us.

  24. Democrat AGAINST Obama

I dont care what the AFL-CIO says...I do not trust Obama.

    GO HILLARY!!!!

I will never vote Obama. I will write hillary's name in and for the sake of our nation...I hope he loses.

And no...I'm not a republican in democrats clothes and I'm not a racist. I am just one of 18 million plus Clinton supporters who feel that electing Barack Obama the next president of the US is the WORST thing we can do.
